Magna-Tiles have gotten fancy! My youngest is going through a dinosaur phase and he’d love to get a set of these.
This Magna-Tile set comes with four dinosaurs and over 30 volcanic and vegetation blocks of varying shapes and sizes. The options for imagination are endless, especially if you add in any other Magni-Tile sets you may already have.
I often take a set of Magna-Tiles on the road — they’re perfect for entertaining my kids at restaurants or when one is waiting for the other to finish an activity.
Magna-Tiles Dino World is $79.99 at Target and also available at Amazon.

Any recommendations for a protective but thin iPad case? Is for a (fairly nondestructive) toddler on a flight and hoping not to take up too much room in the diaper bag.
Anonymous says
I have liked the Speck brand for iPad cases for myself. They are pretty thin.
Our toddler’s iPad has a case I got from Amazon – Adocham is the brand. It’s a squishy rubber so a little more shock absorbency. It also has a built in stand, handles on the top and sides for carrying and came with a stand. It also came with a strap which we’ve found good for hanging from the back of the seat in the car or headrest on an airplane.

Happy Friday! Low stakes poll-
Your 6 year old is out of underwear because no one has had time to do laundry in over a week. Do you:
A) send them to school without?
Or
B) pull a dirty pair out of the laundry basket?
I would say asking for a friend, but let’s be honest here….
What are folks looking forward to this weekend? I’m looking forward to a quiet evening doing laundry after the kids are in bed while it pours buckets outside, and not looking at my work email.
anon says
A + buy more
Anon says
C) Hand wash a pair and dry them with the hair dryer
Anon says
+1.
Anonymous says
Quick wash cycle + hair dryer so you can eat breakfast/get yourself ready while they wash. Kid can also get short on and face washed/hair done while waiting.
DLC says
Oh I always forget about the quick wash cycle! Good reminder! This would of course be the way to go, except my kid doesn’t get dressed until five minutes before we have to leave the house. Sigh.
i run a lot says
Dirty pair from the laundry basket and order more!
Anon says
Hand-wash 1 pair the night before. Both A and B are kinda gross to me.
NYCer says
I would pull a dirty pair out of the laundry basket in this instance. But my kids would never agree to go without, so YMMV if your kid doesn’t care.
Mary Moo Cow says
I have had my girl wear undershorts or turn a pair inside out. Then buy more (this is my current strategy; one kid owns 14 pairs.)
I have dinner with mom friends on Saturday night! First time in months all of us have been able to get together. We are also facing a rainy weekend, so maybe a family movie or some board games.
Anon says
Dirty pair and order more – we’re generally pretty minimalist about clothes but probably have 20 pairs of underwear for each person.
We have our first teacher workday of elementary school today, and we’re finally reaping the childcare benefits of local grandparents (we loved having them close in daycare but rarely used them for childcare because we only needed care on sick days and didn’t want to get them sick). I have a light work from home day and am looking forward to catching up on a lot of house stuff and taking a walk with my mom and kiddo in the afternoon. And then we have a birthday party tomorrow and our first Girl Scout troop meeting Sunday.
Anon says
Do you have other kids? I’d grab a clean pair from older or younger siblings room. I realize you have to have potty trained kids for this to be possible, but that’s what happens at my house…
DLC says
I like this idea too, but said kid is a boy with two sisters, and I don’t know that he would have gone for that. I have definitely done this with his sisters, though.
Anonymous says
C) They would wear the same pair they wore to bed last night. We change underwear at bedtime and in the morning so they wouldn’t be too dirty. And then I would buy more underwear. We have about 25 pairs of underwear and socks for each person to allow for post-sports changes and delayed laundry.
Anonymous says
I would keep them home! I would never go to work with no undies or dirty ones and I wouldn’t expect my kids to either. This is when you wake up at 4 to do laundry and buy vastly more pairs.
HSAL says
You would really keep a kid home who didn’t have clean underwear? That’s baffling to me. Assuming the child put on fresh underwear the prior day, an extra 8-9 hours is not going to make them appreciably dirtier.
But a definite yes to buying more undies so this doesn’t happen again. My kids change every morning and after every bath (four a week) so they go through about 11 pairs a week. Everyone has at least 20 pair.
DLC says
My kids don’t sleep in underwear, but when you reframe it as just another 8-9 hours in yesterday’s pair, pulling last night’s underwear out of the laundry doesn’t seem so bad.
Anon says
This seems like an extreme reaction. 6 year olds don’t make underwear nearly as dirty as adults do (less sweat, no discharge) and even for a grown up I don’t think it’s that horrifying to wear the same pair of underwear for 36 hours.
Anon NYC says
+1. This board constantly reminds me that there are a million ways to parent. It would truly never occur to me to keep my 6yo kid home from school because she has no clean underwear.
Anon says
Our school has a fairly limited number of absences before truancy court and I would never waste one on this!
Anon says
+1. My kids dressed themselves starting at age 4, and I’m sure they went to school without underwear (though never in a dress or skirt).
Anon says
I bet you’re a much better wiper than a 6 year old.
Anon says
My 6 year old wipes fine… When she was a bit younger, I double-checked and did a second wipe if necessary.
HSAL says
I haven’t wiped my 5 1/4 year olds for at least a year. If a 6 year old (without other medical/intellectual issues of course) can’t wipe well on their own, that’s an entirely different issue.
Mary Moo Cow says
Same here! How do you teach that?! I’m at my wits’ end and nothing seems to working (repeated demonstrations, conversations, video of teacher teaching kids with the balloons…). I did not have this issue with my older kid.
Anon says
I agree most 6 year olds can wipe well, but if the kid can’t, I think no underwear is way grosser!
Anon says
I think it’s horrifying for an adult (with abilities + access to facilities) not to bathe/change underclothes for 36 hours.
Anon says
I mean is 24 vs 36 hours *that* different? I change my underwear daily but it seems sort of arbitrary that 24 hours is totally normal and acceptable and 36 hours is “horrifying.” I don’t think 12 extra hours makes that much difference.
Cerulean says
Icky, sure. Horrifying?
Anon says
I think a lot of things are horrifying, and that isn’t one of them. Also, sitting here today, I can think of a day last week where I worked out, showered at 8AM, went into the office, came home and slept (changed into PJs, same undies), got up and put on running clothes (same undies), then went for a run at 3PM. After my run, I showered and put on clean clothes. Genuinely asking, is that horrifying? I am in the office every other day, so this is a pretty common pace for me.
Spirograph says
My vote is for not-horrifying. If I’m planning to work out at lunchish on my wfh day, I often don’t shower the night before or that morning. (I do shower the night or morning before going to work in the office, though.)
Anonymous says
This. I will go one further and say it’s horrifying for an adult to wear only one pair of underwear in 24 hours. I go through three pairs a day–morning workout and dog walk, after shower, night. In the summer I sometimes have to change them in late afternoon too, so four pairs. I often think I must be the only poster here who sweats.
Anonymous says
I mean, I change my underwear at least once and often 2-3 times every 24 hours normally, but if I were out of clean underwear and needed to leave the house, I’d turn a pair from the laundry inside out rather than going commando or calling in sick. I don’t think anyone’s saying it’s plan A, it just doesn’t rise to the level of “horrifying” for me.
Anon says
Yeah maybe see a doctor about your sweating before calling other people horrifying for normal hygiene. (I don’t think you really need to see a doctor but if you’re going to be rude . . . )
Anon says
I sweat, especially when exercising, but not much in the underwear region. It’s my armpits that are far the grossest part of my body when I’m sweating (yes, even with antiperspirant). But also with a car commute and working in an air conditioned office, there are many days I don’t sweat that much even in the summer. Shrug. I think bodies are different and if you want to change your underwear 4 times a day, you do you, but it’s not nice to label others as horrifying for not doing so.
Anon says
I regularly sent my very hard to potty train 4 year old to school without underwear on the recommendation of his teacher. It worked — he did a much better job of remembering to go without underwear on. Now he sometimes forgets to put it on b/c he got so used to going without.

I’m going to Beyoncé on Sunday in our shared home city with my one of my BFFs. DH is on work travel, so sending the kids to my parents through Monday, as it’s a random district holiday (it’s like they knew to coordinate with Beyoncé).
Dream come true!
Anonymous says
Monday is Yom Kippur so it’s not really a “random” day off :) Yay Beyoncé!
Anon says
Yes this is why i don’t like the switch to “fall holiday”
Cerulean says
To be fair, I don’t know of any public schools that refer to days off that fall on religious holidays by the name of the holiday itself. It’s always “winter break” rather than Christmas, even if some people still refer to it that way.
Anon says
Our public school district has the day off for Good Friday, labeled as such. It’s a very Catholic area though.
Anon says
I’m the Beyoncé poster. My apologies! I should have known better given my proximity to the Jewish community.
Also, I wish they didn’t call it Fall Holiday!
Anonymous says
Had this exact scenario this morning with my 11 year old. 15 min quick wash cycle (tossed a swimsuit and hand towel in too) and then dry with Dyson hair dryer which takes like a minute or two.
This is not first time this has happened. Have also used swim suit bottoms. Key is checking if they have all the clothes they need before breakfast even if they don’t get dressed until after so you have time for the quick wash.
Boston Legal Eagle says
Thanks for the reminder to buy more underwear for my older kid! He has twice as many T-shirts than underwear now, but it needs to be the opposite.
It’s supposed to rain here all weekend. Older son and husband will enjoy some soccer in the rain tomorrow, and then we’ve got a few birthday parties. We will also be hanging out with our new puppy! My husband’s decade plus desire to have a dog has finally won out, and so far he is doing the bulk of the work for her :) Easier than a newborn in some ways (only a few quick night wakeups) but harder in others (can’t just put a diaper on her).
Anonymous says
One of my kiddo’s (7, almost 8 years old) Sunday-Thursday chores is to pick out tomorrow’s clothes. It has made our mornings significantly easier for other reasons, but it could prevent this from happening, too.
Agree to buy a bunch more. Underwear is definitely not the limiting factor for doing kiddo’s laundry in our house.
CCLA says
Definitely A as long as they’re not in like loose shorts where they might flash someone. Have definitely done this before for my kid. I mean I go commando a lot in leggings, unless they’re really bad at wiping or prone to small accidents or leaks I don’t see a big issue. Just wash the pants afterwards, don’t rewear (which we end up doing for all their pants anyway since kids get dirty).
Anonymous says
In order:
1) wear a sibling’s pair
2) wear leggings with no underwear
3) no underwear
……
Never) dirty underwear. Yuck.
Vicky Austin says
Team B, but turn it inside out.
Anonymous says
Wow love this debate! Is a bathing suit bottom an option? I would try to find a clean looking pair, turned inside out, in the laundry, if that fails they would go without.
DLC says
The variety of responses are fascinating to me- I love all the “option c”s that I didn’t think of. We clearly have been skimping on the underwear- i think kiddo has 12 pairs. So I’m going to add “buy underwear” to the weekend to do list.
FWIW- I sent him to school in underwear from the laundry basket. I did give them a good sniff and inspection to make sure they weren’t a casualty of bad wiping. I do wonder if I would have made a different decision for a girl? I can see me sending my daughters to school with just leggings and no underwear – and I’m sure it has probably happened before. A boy seems different, though.
I also asked my Husband what he would have chosen, and he said, “Definitely dirty underwear. You don’t want his zipper rubbing on his naked p*nis. That’s really unpleasant.”
Anonymous says
Yeah I hate going commando. It’s physically uncomfortable! And personally I think getting, ahem, fluid on your pants or skirt is waaaay grosser than wearing slightly old underwear but that’s less of an issue with kids.
Anon says
I’m due at the end of April. Is there a typical time in the fall for sales on bigger-ticket baby items? I’d love to take advantage of post-Christmas sales, for example, but I’m not sure if items like cribs, dressers, car seats, and strollers would be affected by those sales. Any advice? A few of the brands we have in mind to explore are Uppababy (the Cruz and maybe the Mesa), Clek, and maybe Pottery Barn Kids for furniture…
Anon says
In my experience, some items will only be on sale around Black Friday. Definitely depends on the items, though.
Anon says
Furniture places often have black friday sales…If I remember right, Ablee baby has period sales on uppababy — maybe around when they have the annual model turnover. Might be worth getting on an emai llist so you get notified!
Anon says
Albee also has a military/first responder/medical discount, if that applies. They let you use it on anything, even on brands that are normally excluded from discounts at most stores.
anon says
While I have not tested this recently, friends were telling me any items not purchased off a registry by the shower date generally quality for 10-20% depending on the retailer. I’m due with my second in November and no shower, but a friend insisted I do this. So we have a “shower” date next week and then hoping to clear the “registry” thereafter with some coupon codes.
FWIW, this was absolutely true when I was married in 2014 (Crate & Barrell, BBB (rip)), and had my first in 2018 (BuyBuy Baby, Target). It just never occurred to me to do this with my second. And I’m not ashamed about gaming the system against Ama zon.
DCR says
This is true, but IME it is tied to your due date. I think you get the discount 6 weeks before the due date. And I may have (oh, I totally did) listed a due date 3 weeks early because I wanted to get it all done early. Which turned out to be the right choice, since I got admitted to the hospital at 34 weeks.
Anon. says
I bought a BOB stroller on Black Friday or maybe Cyber Monday about 6 years ago for a great deal.
Anon says
Thanks all – we’ll mobilize for Black Friday!! We plan to buy some things used, but for things you can’t (i.e., carseat), would love to get deals.
Anon says
My memory is that car seats and strollers are typically on sale (thought it may not be the brands you want). For example, I think our Graco car seats normally come up on big sales, but our Baby Jogger stroller typically does not. Ergobaby carriers normally are on sale also. A lot of little things come up on sale, but those are the things you will typically get at showers, so that isn’t helpful.
I do not remember PB Kids having much of a discount– I think we waited until Black Friday and there was no sale on our items so we just ordered then anyway.
Abby says
I had a baby the same time this year! I got a great deal on the Uppababy Vista around Oct/Nov because I think they were discontinuing the color (light grey). I didn’t get any of the furniture on sale, but I recommend creating an Amazon, Target, and Babylist registry, even if you don’t share them with anyone, for the completion discount. Amazon in particular was 15% off unlimited orders until a certain date. Babylist has some restrictions on what’s included for the discount, but a lot of fancy brands were included which was nice.
Anon says
Unsolicited advice, but I’d avoid PB Kids at least for furniture. It’s way overpriced for the quality. We have a bookshelf from them and I’ve had $50 Ikea and Target bookshelves that have held up way better.
Anon says
Good to know – some of the stuff is really cute, but I do care about quality and longevity.
Anonymous says
+1 on PB furniture.
Anon2 says
We have a set from Delta Children and it’s held up amazingly (each piece was between $150-250). It’s gone through three kids and will soon be used for a fourth. After that we’ll pack up the crib for grandkids, keep using the dresser as the baby grows and toss the changing table.
Anona says
Agreed, except for the dream recliner – I sat down at 6 months pregnant and never wanted to get up. Which is good, because I’ve now spent many many hours in the one we ordered that day, with no regrets!
Anonymous says
Can you register for everything you plan to buy and then purchase with a registry completion discount?
New Here says
This time of year is a big time for consignment sales as well! I was just at a small local one and saw an Uppa Baby Vista. Just a thought.
We got our crib from Target and dresser from IKEA and were very happy with both.
Anonymous says
we registered for “real” with babylist because it gave everyone different buying options, but i also registered for ama zon because they offer a completion discount of 15% that can frequently be stacked with black friday sales etc. I’m due the end of December so trying to hold off on some bigger non-necessary items like a snoo to use those discounts with
Anonymous says
Keep an eye out for Bloomingdale’s sales. They carry all those items and will have deals like spend $1k and get a $300 gift card. You can buy a stroller and get the car seat for almost free that way. That’s how I purchased most of my higher end big ticket items earlier this year!
Anonymous says
Not really related, but I loved my Cruz for my now-8 year old. Every time I see one I get nostalgic. I would absolutely buy the same stroller again today.

My mantra this morning is – “I will NOT comment on the post in my neighborhood moms Facebook group (even thought they are making some very inaccurate statements). I will NOT engage with the FB moms on this point.”
Unrelated – Does anyone have particular recommendations for a fidget bracelet for a 4 year old boy? My son has taken to pulling at his socks when he’s bored at school (such as during rest time or circle time), leading to 50% plus of the sock being unraveled by the time we pick him up. I just can’t keep going through 5 pairs of socks a week. (Yes, he needs to wear socks because he has some foot/ankle issues that require him to wear SMO braces, which require socks.). We are thinking a fidget bracelet might give him an outlet/keep his hands busy. Thank you!!!
Anon says
Ooh yeah I feel this. My town’s mom page just had a big discussion about how not vaxxing is “healthier.” Really had to bite my tongue on that one.
Anonymous says
Oh FFS. I always take those kinds of things as a helpful list of people
I want to avoid.
Anonymous says
I’ve seen pop-it bracelets.
I also wonder if a watch would work.
Anon says
Ugh, I need to follow your example. I made the mistake of wading into the fray on a local post where a woman was hit-and-run while cycling (by another cyclist) and was severely injured and now all the local bros are accusing her of lying about it. Just cannot with men sometimes.
More Sleep Would Be Nice says
Girl, yes. I don’t frequent my neighborhood mom’s page mostly because I forgot how to log into FB, but there are so many coded conversations that drive me bonkers. Probably better I don’t partake.
anon says
I think forgetting how to log in to FB is a huge win. I miss some things, but my life is way better without FB and the like.

Low stakes question. Please tell me it’s reasonable that my 2.5 year old (3 later this year) sometimes prefers to wiggle around the carpet vs. sit nicely and listen during circle time?
No other concerns, often times he’s front and center and paying attention, but when it’s something that doesn’t interest him…he just rather wiggle.
Anon says
Oh, absolutely normal. It’s normal, well common at least, through age 5 or 6, if not older.
Cb says
Honestly, in boring meetings, I’d rather wiggle…
Anon says
Same. I actually attended a meeting where they handed out fidget toys, kindergarten style, and I thought it was awesome!
Anon says
Normal. If he is running around and disturbing the group then the adults need to work on getting him to sit (running around at 2 is still a normal behavior, but one that is appropriate to limit). Mostly sitting in one place but wiggling seems totally acceptable. (And unfortunately kids’ – especially boys’ – NEED to wiggle until well into grade school is not widely recognized or accepted)
OP says
Thank you! No running around that I saw, definitely not disturbing others (that I know of)…but definitely wiggling around on the rug and, knowing him, more interested in identifying the letters and numbers that he sees vs. whatever was being taught at the moment.
anon says
My kid is a little over 3 and wiggles or moseys around his bedroom during bedtime stories and occasionally I’ve tuned into the school camera when they are having stories and half the class is rolling around the rug or pacing. I think they have a rule that they have to stay on the rug but not sit still.
Anon says
My active 3.5 year old son watches TV while either a) jumping up or down or b) rolling around on the carpet.
He will sit for circle time at preschool now for 5-10 minutes at a time but he could not do that for more than 2-3 minutes at 2.5.
Anonymous says
Totally normal, especially if this is the first year his class has circle time.
