I think this a beautiful dress, though I’m still in the baby phase of shying away from white (who are we kidding, I shied away from it because of *my* eating habits prior to kids).
Quick vent: I am SO tired. I’ve consistently worked early into the mornings with colleagues but am SO jealous their kid-less lives allow them to sleep until 8am. They’ll get close to 6 hours of sleep and I struggle with 4–and even then the baby still wakes up once during that time.

Hi C-Moms – any alternatives to American Girl dolls that you’re particularly enamored with? My two nieces, ages 3 and 5, are getting AG dolls from “Santa” for Christmas. My daughter is also 5 and plays with her cousins quite a bit, so I want to get her a reasonable facsimile (not spending $100+ on a doll she hasn’t specifically asked for) in order to ward off any cases of the gimmes. My daughter also really likes her babies but doesn’t have any older dolls, so I think she’ll enjoy this anyway.
I know the Our Generation line at Target is one option. Any others out there that you like better?

My almost-5 daughter completely flipped out for the Our Generation dolls when we saw them at Target. I looked at a few other catalogs (cptoys has a line of similar 18-inch dolls, as does PBKids) and thought that the Target dolls hit the right balance of cuteness and cheapness. They have a ton of accessories, and you can find the line at TJMaxx for even steeper discounts.

Check out Madame Alexander 18″ dolls. We don’t have any (yet – I’m sure we will because my oldest is mentioning AG more and more often), but we have all been so happy with the baby dolls that it’s going to be my first stop. They are priced between OG and AG.
Oh, and they are like the AG/OG dolls – not the creepy ones for old ladies that I always associated with Madame Alexander.

I absolutely love this dress, but can’t figure out for the life of me where you would wear it. Wouldn’t wear a velvet dress to work, particularly a white one with a pattern. But the color/pattern seems too casual or summery for a holiday party. What is this dress intended to be?
Pogo says
Yep, my thoughts exactly. The velvet + light color combo is super tricky. Also I’m a little skeptical of how well velvet would hold up after repeated washings…

Looks great for an afternoon tea…because don’t we all go out for afternoon tea?

I thought the same. I’d love this in a wine, dark green, or midnight option.

I’m about 12 weeks pregnant and my breasts have gone up close to a cup size. This is my first pregnancy. I have no idea how big they will get, but I know I need to start getting a maternity bra or two. Any suggestions? Will my band size stay the same throughout pregnancy? Should I just get something to fit me now and if they go up more, then get something then? I suppose that’s all I can really do. Any tips for maternity bras? My OB said many women like to get nursing bras and just wear them through, but I have no idea what size to get.
I’m in a colder climate, so while I’ve been wearing sports bras, shelf bras, etc., the past few weeks, I really need something that will hide, uh, chills in the air.
anon says
I just bought two bras in the larger size, and then later, two bras in the next larger size (to allow for washing). Still in regular underwire bras so far (early 3d trimester). Because things are so tender, haven’t found non-underwire nursing bras to be supportive enough, and haven’t wanted to buy underwire nursing bras because I may not want them and have no idea what size to get. So far my band is the same, but I have a very long torso so the baby’s nowhere near my ribcage yet (and a large ribcage to begin with for my size).
hoola hoopa says
My experience, consistent in three pregnancies.
The cup size will continue to go up slightly, but IME it doesn’t change much after the initial swelling. The band size will increase throughout the pregnancy. I do not get nursing bras, because my BFing size is bigger (in cup, not band) than my pregnancy size – and besides, I don’t want to wear nursing bras when I don’t have to.
I recommend buying a bra now that it stretchy in the cups and has a band that fits on the smallest size. Something like the b tempt’d full bloom. Those stretchy ones are unlined, but well worth wearing a tank under tops IMO.
ANP says
With my second pregnancy, I splurged (~$50) on Bravado nursing bras. They’re stretchy (and lined, so no worries about cold weather) with quite a bit of give for when the girls fluctuate in size. I loved these bras and will probably buy a few more now that I’m expecting #3!
Nonny says
Bravado seconded. I bought a couple more when I was more certain of my nursing size, and in fact I am wearing one right now. They were super comfy during pregnancy and I still like them.
Spirograph says
Bravado thirded. I don’t remember my band size increasing drastically with my first pregnancy – I made it through that one buying a couple new bras one cup size up (luckily that was the best size when I returned to work still nursing, too). It definitely has this time around, though. I’m up at least one cup and probably two band sizes, but instead of buying new bras, I have just been wearing my nursing bras. I don’t look quite as perky as when I wear my regular underwires, but let’s be honest: I am in the exhausted whale phase, so perkiness is relative and I give zero @#$s at this point. And Bravados are so comfortable.
pockets says
I don’t think maternity bras per se exist – I think most women just get bigger “normal” bras as they go along. My experience was that I bought the same bras I normally wear, just one cup size up and then one more cup size up as the pregnancy progressed. My band size never increased. I would buy what fits now and just accept that you are going to be spending a lot of extra money on bras in the next few months.
Annie says
Ah. This makes sense. I haven’t been able to wear my normal push-up/wires for a few weeks, and am thinking of just getting a bigger size in non-wired. Sounds like the band size may or may not increase. Thanks, ladies, for all your knowledge and help!
Anonymama says
Yeah, I would advise getting cheap but fitting bras from target/Gap, there’s going to be a lot of variation in the near future, and it is worth it to be more comfortable.
AEK says
My band size *drastically* increased. My rib cage really expanded. I am not large of bust so I went for wireless cups in my usual size (much more comfortable given the aforementioned rib growth) and a larger band.
Jen says
For my first pregnancy my cup size went up but my band size didn’t really go up. Then when I was nursing the band and cup size went up (although I really think it was just that by the end of pregnancy they were a DD and then got bigger after that for several weeks). I only wore a nursing bra when I was pumping because I had to clip my pump in, otherwise I kind of hated them and when I stopped pumping I would just nurse in normal bras.
For my second kid my boobs also got bigger but not crazy big like the first one. Now everything is back to pre-pregnancy normal.
mascot says
My band size went up one size permanently. You can buy those band extenders fit on the bra hooks. Look at those petals that you can slip in the bra for better coverage.
K. says
I initially just got 1 or 2 in larger sizes, but after sizing up a second time, decided that for the third time I would purchase these nursing bras I found on a m a z o n that were kind of like sports bras with molded cups that were nursing bras. They were sized small, med., large and the more flexible nature served me the rest of the pregnancy and now post partum while nursing. They aren’t particularly cute, but they are high cut, so they add some extra coverage that looks like a tank top, which was nice. I loved that I didn’t need to keep buying additional sizes!
Msj says
If you don’t need a tremendous amount of support coobies are great. They are one size and lightly lined. I also use them all the time for nursing. I also did buy a new underwire bra in my new size for when I needed more of a lift.
