We’ve purchased this sunhat 5 times because it keeps getting claimed. Our kids started by stealing ours, even though it’s oversized–they love wearing it to keep the sun off, so we ordered copies for them. Then my FIL fell in love with it after borrowing mine at a soccer game. I ordered him one. My dad wanted one. My husband claimed mine.

If I’m giving out coloring books as a party favor, do I also need to give something to color with? Kids are 5. Personally, I don’t need more crayons/markers/etc. at this point and wouldn’t expect to use the coloring book out and about, but I don’t want to skip something to color with if parents will be annoyed. Trying to pick a favor that isn’t just more junk, but don’t want to make it annoying in another way!
Anon says
I would give crayons or markers. 5 year olds will want to color on the way home from the party.
AwayEmily says
You definitely do not need to give anything to color with.
GCA says
I don’t think you need to; most families have some sort of crayons/ markers/ colored pencils at home. If you want something cute and different, consider rainbow crayons or colored pencils (easily available in bulk online)!
Redux says
Agreed: not necessary but could do something fun. In addition to GCA’s ideas, you could consider a stackable crayon for each kid (10 pack is 3$ at target). We do indeed have lots of crayons etc at home, but I love a stackable crayon for the car or a plane and would be happy to get one of those as a favor.
Anon says
That’s a great idea.
NYCer says
I don’t think it is necessary to give crayons or markers with the coloring book.
Anon says
I’ve given out these before in party favor bags to be something at least slightly different than what they maybe already have. compact for on the go.

HSAL says
Definitely not a need but I think the stacking ones are cute.
Bette says
No need to give out crayons.
I also hate these gift bags. They are such a waste of money and just create debris in my house.
Let’s normalize not having gift bags for kids!
Clementine says
YES. I don’t need gift bags! Somehow the fights in my house are never over the actual nice toys, they’re always over the $.50 slap bracelet.
Anon says
Eh the kids love it and I’m fine with anything that brings my kids joy. I do preferable consumables (stickers, tattoos, food, art supplies) over tiny plastic things that will live in my house forever.

Shopping help? I’m looking for a sweater blazer or ponte blazer or similar (I just want some stretch) that is a light color to top dark neutrals (navy and black). I think because it is to top dark neutrals it probably needs a dark thread in it maybe as part of a tweed like pattern? Anyone seen anything like this? My back up plan is to get a camel color sweater blazer and use that. I think Quince and JCrew have those so I’m looking for something more interesting than that, if it exists.

Or either of these colors would be really pretty with black and blue: https://factory.jcrew.com/m/womens/categories/clothing/blazers/linen-cotton-blend-holland-blazer/MF075?display=standard&fit=Classic&color_name=bohemian-red&colorProductCode=AL222

Just chiming in that I really like my J Crew Factory sweater blazers. They’re the highest quality clothing I have from Factory, and they fit me a lot better than the main J Crew store options. So just encouraging you to check those out and maybe try on both if you go that route because the fit is different.
Chl says
I have a jcrew glen plaid sweater blazer and I love it. I got it on poshmark.
TheElms says
I wouldn’t be annoyed but I would think it was a bit odd, but perhaps that is because I have a 4 year old. I also tend to stash some paper and a small pack of crayons in my bag at all times as a just in case entertainment option so I always appreciate those small packs of crayons for that purpose. If you wanted to do something slightly different you could do those stackable crayons.
TheElms says
Threading fail – for the coloring book question.
Anon says
I would think it was kind of odd too. We have tons of crayons at home but I also appreciate the small packs for travel.
Anonymous says
I like the little packages that have like three crayons and a tiny coloring book. Target used to sell them in the dollar bin.

Can anyone recommend books about transitioning to kinder? My son has been at his child care since he was 4 months old. He is really struggling with leaving, which I understand! I appreciate any recs you have!
Clementine says
The books were fine, but what really helped was going to play on the playground regularly. It helped kiddo feel comfortable in the new setting.
Anon says
This. Books don’t do anything for my kid.
Anon says
Thanks! That’s was part of the plan but books do help my kid which is why I asked.

Check out the Kissing Hand, especially as it gets closer to school starting, if he is more worried about the new school than leaving the old one. And +1 to the playground.

I know that my vacation plans are the least of the world’s problems, but DH has a sabbatical and i managed to hoard a month’s worth of vacation so we could spend time in the northeast with our families and escape the 100+ degree summers where we live and with the air quality issues from the wildfires i feel like we are barely going to be outside anymore on our trip than we can at home and I’m so disappointed. We’ve been planning this trip for 2 years
More Sleep Would Be Nice says
Hi – Just an internet stranger giving you permission to feel how you feel. Big Hug.
Separate thought…it’s already a 100+ degrees where I live, too – it gets to 100 regularly in the summer, here, but NOT this early. It’s crazy. And then to see the goings on upper Midwest and the Northeast – that that are more temperate mid-summer than my location, and where folks are outdoors this time of year usually PLUS the constant air quality issues on the West Coast/PNW – I just don’t get how anyone can challenge the impacts of climate change.
Anonymous says
We’ve had a small handful
Of bad air days. Not a month of them.
NYCer says
Agreed. If you’re in the Northeast for a month, the majority of your days should be fine.
Anon says
“Fine” sort of depends on your definition. Serious long term health effects (including cognitive impacts) happen at levels where you don’t have any trouble breathing. It’s really not great for people, especially kids, to be very active outdoors when the AQI is over 100 which has been often this summer in the northeast. Obviously 300 is much worse but I personally wouldn’t call 100 “fine” if it’s happening regularly. Not OP though and maybe she feels differently.
Anonymous says
It hasn’t been often though. I’m in NYC, and it was for a few days in early June, and now for 2 days.
Anon says
It actually depends where you are in the Northeast, so maybe its fine where the prior poster is. I live where its been a mix of terrible, not great and totally fine. OP, as someone who loves summer and is living through the poor AQI, I agree, it stinks. A lot. But try to remember that you planned this trip both for a fun summer and also to spend time with family. You might spend more time indoors than anticipated, but hopefully you’ll still be able to bond with family like you planned. Also, as I said in the beginning, AQI varies a lot depending where you are, and you might be able to go on day trips or weekend jaunts to places with better AQI. Things may not go as planned, but hopefully it can still be fun and give you time to bond with your extended family.
NYCer says
I am not trying to ague, but I just looked at a chart of the AQI in NYC during the month of June. 26 out of 30 days were under 100. Four days were over 100, including today. I am not downplaying the bad days, but just pointing out to the OP that the majority of her days will hopefully be okay.
Anon says
I don’t think she said she’s going to NYC though. There are many parts of the northeast that have been worse.
Anonymous says
100 isn’t happening regularly in the northeast.
Anon says
I’m sorry, that really sucks. I’m a summer-hater but feel so bad for all the people who love this season and are sad at being stuck inside. Also the smoke is apparently reaching Europe, which is crazy!

Camp appreciation post! I know figuring out camps is hard but this morning I was SO HAPPY to send my grumpy six year old off to bike camp where she will be outside exercising all day and come home happy instead of me trying to figure out what to do with my kids all day.
Anon says
Yay! Camp is so great for kids. My extroverted only child would go crazy if she were home with me all summer.

I love a high-quality day camp. I love a good sleepaway camp even more. My kid always comes back much more mature and self-confident.

Prompted by the sabbatical poster above and a co-worker who’s taking the entire month of July off, I’m curious if you’ve taken a big chunk of time off if you thought it was worth it? I’ve always been team “frequent vacations > long vacations” but I’ve been rethinking that lately and wondering if several weeks off in a row would be more restorative.
octagon says
My preferred is to do a long vacation (2+ weeks) every few years, with a lot of time to plan and prepare for it. But we haven’t been on one since before kiddo was born, and then Covid hit, and I’m starting to feel like I really need a long break. Unfortunately we’ve had too many required trips (weddings etc) this year and so all our trips have been shorter — while fun, I want to go somewhere next year and really unwind.
Anon says
I’m the sabbatical poster above (well my husband is the one with the sabbatical, I’m using PTO). Our kids are still youngish- now they are 5 and will be doing 2 weeks of day camp on our trip. Last summer we traveled for 3 weeks, no day camp and the summer before 2.5. What makes these trips somewhat restorative at least for me is that we are staying with family, so extra hands, DH is around 24/7 (i generally do a lot of solo parenting) and i don’t cook dinner once the whole month bc the family we are staying with either cooks or gets food. I don’t think a whole month of just me and DH with no help with the kids would be fun
