I can always count on Boden when I need to add some color to my work wardrobe.
This boxy, knitted jacket is made from 100% cotton. The nautical red-and-navy trim, gold buttons, and punchy round collar would complement a pair of wide-leg trousers or even your favorite jeans.
Boden’s Holly Collared Knitted Jacket is $190. In addition to ivory, it comes in a navy-and-ivory stripe and “strawberry tart red.” It’s available in sizes 2 to 20/22.

Any kid-friendly San Francisco hotel recommendations for late February? I have two nights there with my 8- and 10-year olds coming up in a few weeks. I’d also love any recommendations for fun activities. They love science centers and museums. We’d be open to a city tour. I’ve only been to SF for interviews and conferences, so I’d love to do some sightseeing. Is Alcatraz interesting for kids?
I’m looking for advice about high school from this group of reasonable and driven women, partially prompted from some discussion about math curriculum on the main page. My oldest is in 8th grade. He had a flare of his chronic illness (the first in 8 years) in 7th grade, with the result that academics were very low on his and my list last year. This year is entirely different. He is back to his sarcastic and engaged self. I intentionally do not push on the academic front because he has been self-motivated and has historically done well without needing to put in much effort. He has been in the accelerated math group for years. His math teacher this year is amazing and has managed to light a fire for my son.
The state where we live has a magnet school that is focused on STEM. It is a truly amazing school and program, but it is a boarding school about 4 hours north. My son has done summer camps at the school. I have not pushed the school but he has raised it as an option for 10th-12th grades. I found a school pamphlet in his room that he keeps tucked under his mousepad, and he will randomly barge into my office to ask a question that shows me he has been thinking through logistics, the curriculum, or whatever for a few hours.
Last week was the open house night at our local public school. It is a wonderful, small public high school. The curriculum does not compare to what the STEM school offers. The most straight forward issue is that our local public school does not offer a “math pathway” for my kid. My son and I spoke with the math department chair that night, and my son mentioned what math class he had tested into for next year. The math chair looked at us a bit puzzled, and then said, “oh, that’s right. I heard that there may be one or two of you who need your own classes.” By his junior year, he would be taking classes at the community college. It is the same issue for their STEM classes, where the school offers no path for kids who have been doing programming, CAD, and 3D printing for years of their own curiosity, and only offers one advanced class.
In terms of cost, state residents pay only room and board for the magnet school. Other local private schools are 65K per year.
I am struggling with how to support my son’s own self-determination on this. I don’t want to push him to go, and I can see how great the magnet school would be for him in so many ways. The thought of him going to boarding school rips me apart, but I don’t want my own feelings to be the driver for his decision. I’m a single parent, so I don’t have anyone to bounce this off of. I appreciate any of your thoughts.
Anxious mom here! Kiddo’s speech therapist just reached out saying she’s thrilled with kid’s progress, he’s doing so well, and can we connect briefly on what’s working for us, what we’re seeing at home, and if we have any concerns. (She actually sent us a separate note last week on how great their session was that day).
It’s going to be a quick call while she’s in transit this afternoon – my anxious brain is going in a million directions, I’m trying not to spiral and focus on the positive aspect of this outreach.
Where’s everyone going for spring break this year? What were your favorite spring break trips with elementary age kids?
Talk to me about area rugs for a nursery. We have hardwood floors so definitely need a rug. I’m thinking of getting a Ruggable. I have a couple of Ruggables elsewhere and like them. They’re not very cushy or plush, but they spot clean really well (one is 8×10 so it’s not going in the wash). Does the more expensive pad option make a big difference? Has anyone tried the tufted version? How does it clean? Anything I should worry about with fumes etc.? I’m just starting to dive into nursery decor and there’s so much I don’t know.
Also: anyone know if they’ll have a sale anytime soon? I’m due at the end of summer but the nursery furniture has to go on the rug so the rug is sort of the first piece we need (my glider chair, for example, has a round metal base, I can’t just stick felt footies on it). Thanks!
This sweater is really cute. $190 is a little out of my budget, though. On the other hand, all of my Boden purchases have been workhorses.
My husband is going through a stressful period at work. He’s now venting at the drop of the hat. Our kid woke up with a nasty cough this morning. When I asked husband what he wanted to about it he ranted for 5 minutes about how much work he has to do this morning.
This is part rant and part cry for advice- I want to be supportive but I also can’t deal with the constant emotional dumping.
