A minor vent about medical care. My kids’ pediatrician does not have appointments available until the last week of September. My daughter has had a GI issue for weeks now, and I’m in pain for her at the thought of waiting another month with these stomach pains. My own doctor is frequently booked out at least an entire month. I tried to switch gynes, and the next available appointment for a doctor accepting new, non-OB patients was November! My family goes to the walk-in clinic for routine ear infections and ankle sprains, but that setting just doesn’t make sense for lots of medical conditions. Do I just need to find a smaller family doctor practice? I picked our doctors because they are affiliated with or have admitting privileges at the large research hospitals in my major city, and I hope that means they’re up to date with the latest advances in medicine. But if I can never get in . . . I’m really not getting the benefit of that anyway!

Friday book club? I am late to this party, but I finally picked up Strangers: A Memoir of Marriage by Belle Burden this week. I read the first quarter or so, but I don’t think I can finish it… I am glad she found some peace processing this way, and her ex seems like a piece of work, but I couldn’t get past the feeling that publicizing and monetizing your ex-husband’s bad behavior (with kids in the mix!) is such a selfish and spiteful thing to do. Also the causal mentions of the trappings of generational wealth were such a poor little rich girl vibe to me.

Did anyone else read it? Does it get better? What should I read instead?

I feel like procrastinating at work today and I commented on the Volvo thread about skiing. Any other skier moms here looking forward to winter? Where are you skiing? We’re in CA and the “monster El Nino” might result in an amazing winter – hard to say. If it does, we’ll do a Tahoe trip or two and then we’re also planning a few nights in Sun Valley, ID where we have family. My toddler will be almost 2.5 and we’re looking forward to getting him on skis if only for 15-20 minutes. It’s always worth it to try those things.

Tips for surviving the third trimester at a job where there’s not a lot of quality checking steps? My first pregnancy I was at a job where reviewing each other’s work before sending it out was standard practice for everyone and you’d get in trouble if you didn’t do it. Current job is a very small company with literally no quality processes at all and I have no peers I could ask to check my work – it’s just me. I’m so stressed about sending out work with mistakes I’m losing sleep, which certainly doesn’t help with the pregnancy brain.

I’ve lost all my cooking mojo in a scrum of busy evenings. Ideas for quick dinners, or prep that can become multiple different meals? I have nights home alone and nights where I have to feed the kids after work….

My seven year old has a couple small pimples! She had one about six months ago on her nose – just like a pore, hard to describe. And I brought it up to the pediatrician who didn’t seem concerned. But now it’s almost acne?!

I have a visit to the pediatrician scheduled for next week. Anyone been through this? She’s too young for hormonal (which is why I want to see the ped – rule any issues there out). It’s very disconcerting, if that makes sense.

Sadly, it’s looking like my beloved Volvo XC90 is going to be ready to head out to pasture sooner rather than later. This car has been so good to us that I’m strongly considering replacing it with a newer version in the plug-in hybrid (other car is electric). 3 kids, we ski a lot, live in the Northeast, short commutes but longer weekend adventures.

A couple questions for the group – Captain’s chairs or bench seat? Right now, we have the version which has a bench seat in the middle and an optional third row, but we’ve been heavily using the 3rd row because otherwise my kids are totally in each other’s space. Captain’s chairs in the 2nd row would be nice but it would mean sacrificing trunk space more permanently.

We are going to get a roof box for this vehicle so we can keep the skis in there and avoid the salt spray and general filth. Does anyone have a roof box they either do or don’t recommend?

Does anybody have another 3 row plug in hybrid that they love? I’ve had such a good experience with my Volvo and really like the safety profile that I’ve been leaning towards ‘this but newer’ but should probably look around.
