Toddlers learning to use the potty need a lot of pants. So, I stocked up on these bargain shorts for the summer.
These shorts have an adjustable drawstring and are made from at least 20% recycled polyester. They come in a range of neutral colors (so they’ll match every dinosaur and construction shirt they already own). There are even pockets for all the rocks and sticks they’ll collect throughout the day.
These shorts are on sale for $4 (!) at Target and come in sizes 12M to 5T. Right now, there are four colors available: navy, black, brown, and charcoal gray.

We are (European airline strikes permitting) heading off on holiday tomorrow and I was struck with how much easier it is to pack, prepare and travel with a bigger kid. I just have to get myself, my son, and our two backpacks through the airport. And I’ve finished the application I was working on, and handed over the writing project to a colleague, so the laptop is staying here.
So if you’re juggling two car seats and changing diapers in a tiny plane bathroom, rest assured, it gets easier.
Spirograph says
Yes! The first time I traveled and didn’t need to pack diapers and a car seat may have been accompanied by a ray of sunshine with angels singing. Enjoy your holiday, Cb, fingers crossed for no labor-related disruptions!
Anonymous says
Yes! My six year old and I flew solo together last month. It was so easy. Makes me want to do lots more fun, random trips (perhaps when airline tickets go down in price, lol!).
Anon says
Yes! One of my favorite parenting milestones was when I first walked onto a plane with my kid with nothing but our backpacks (we had a big checked suitcase too but I didn’t have to manage that. Now that she’s 4 we go carry-on only for most trips and she normally manages her own rollaboard and backpack. Big kid travel is the best. Enjoy your holiday!
Boston Legal Eagle says
Enjoy! I’m hoping our trip this summer is the last time where we have to worry about car seats beyond travel boosters, pull-ups and other toddler related things. Kids will be 6 and almost 4 so getting there. At least we can just give them iPads now and hopefully that will keep them entertained!
Cb says
Yes, we’re going to my parents in Portugal so there’s a carseat and assorted kit there, so I feel like I’m cheating a bit with travelling light. But it’s so nice not to have to worry about anything, especially after realising I didn’t understand how to use a disposable diaper work in a very long passport control line in Berlin…while my son was in the sling.

Just remember if it’s Edinburgh Airport to allow time for the Highland show traffic! It’s a nightmare just no. Have fun!
Cb says
Um, hello fellow EDI mom! Do we know each other? I think my husband is going to run us into the city centre which will be heaving but maybe faster and grab the tram.
anon says
It gets SO MUCH EASIER. And it’s even better when you can tell your kid: hey, go grab 4 t-shirts, 3 pairs of shorts, swim trunks, and 5 pairs of underwear.
Anon says
Yes! Our twins were 2 (almost 3) on our last pre-pandemic trip, so out of the diapers and cribs stage, but we were still bringing two car seats on board the plane, they couldn’t reliably carry their own plane toys and snacks, we still brought a stroller or baby carriers most of the time. We just took our first plane trip since 2019 and wow it’s so much easier with two 5-year-olds! They pack and carry their own stuff! They sit in the plane seat without a carseat! They don’t need to be reminded to try to pee before we board! They can amuse themselves! It was great.

It looks like we’re getting more slots of vaccines opening up around us, including with both Moderna and Pfizer as options. If you’ve done this already, how did your under 5s handle it? My 3.5 year old typically hates shots at the ped office, but did ok with the drive through flu shot. And is there any reason not to choose Moderna just for the ease of only having 2 shots? Thanks all.
Anon says
My 4YO (almost 5) did Moderna. Despite much anxiety until our late afternoon appointment (and a good 45 minute wait because the pharmacy was overwhelmed), it was so quick she was still trying to decide whether to cry by the time they put the bandaid on. She had no side effects for the first shot; TBD on the second. There is definitely a higher likelihood of side effects for Moderna, but for us the timing was the determining factor; we wanted her fully vaxxed before K starts in August and she wouldn’t have had her third Pfizer shot until at best 2 weeks after school started. And the most common side effect was fever, which my kid has never been prone to fevers and takes motrin like a champ, so I was pretty confident we would be able to manage it. Plan is to get her a 5YO-dose booster later in the fall to get even more protection.
Anon says
We chose Moderna for fewer shots and quicker time to protection (my understanding is that Pfizer’s 3 dose series may be more effective than Moderna’s 2 dose, but Pfizer’s 2 dose is essentially worthless and 13 weeks is a long time to wait for protection with cases being as high as they are now).
We got my 4 year old vaccinated at Walgreens. She cried hysterically beginning from when we pulled into the parking lot until we left the exam room post-shot, but she had no side effects from the shot itself except a sore arm. There were a bunch of other 3 and 4 year olds there and none of them were crying; my kid is just sensitive and doesn’t do well with the anticipation of the shot.

Your Local Epidemiologist did a good post on Under 5 shots and coevred why she thinks Moderna is better, among other things – protects faster and Pfizer’s efficacy data is inadequate. Note that she said that a 3rd dose will be coming later for Moderna, but they are working on an Omicron-specific booster.

Anon says
Yes I’m hoping my daughter’s shot #3 will be Omicron-specific. That was one of the reasons we chose Moderna.
Anonymous says
Moderna shot 1 22 hours ago and no side effects thus far. Slept longer than usual last night but could be either a side effect or just a busy day yesterday.
CCLA says
Our 3.5 yo complained that shot hurt when it happened, but otherwise zero symptoms. I wasn’t there for it but DH says it was nbd other than angst while waiting. We definitely went for Moderna on purpose, Pfizer would take so long to get fully protected and we really want her to be in the “fully vaxxed” category as it impacts quarantines and days home for exposure etc. (yes also want protection of course but seems like they are comparable looking at Pfizer data being very limited, and seems likely there will be a Moderna booster).

fyi, a bunch of stuff at Hanna is 50% off right now and for once they actually have most sizes in stock…I just got a swimsuit and some dresses for my 6yo.

My daughters friend invited her to see a movie with her family. What’s the etiquette on paying? Should I just give my daughter cash, or ask the mom after how much it was? Or not bother with any for such a small amount?
Anonymous says
I’d send cash to be safe. But I’d also text/call the mom about arrangements and let her know you’d send cash. At that time, she should respond with respet to what her plans were. But in any event (even if friend’s mom plans to pay), I’d still send some cash just to be safe.
Anon says
What my mom did in these situations was send cash, tell me to offer to pay for the movie and if they decline, treat them to concessions.
Spirograph says
I would expect the friend’s family will buy her ticket, but definitely give your daughter cash so she can purchase snacks if she likes (and cover the cost of her ticket, just in case).

We just made a disappointing but financial responsible decision (not doing an optional house project that was going to cost way more than we had anticipated) and I found out daycare is raising tuition by more than 10% next year which is not exactly unexpected but still sucks (meanwhile my salary “merit increase” this year is 4% instead of the usual 2%…thanks stingy employer). Tell me fun/happy things?
Momofthree says
My almost two year old daughter loves the “if you’re happy & you know it” song. She’ll start clapping and scream “clap!” to get me to start. On the “if you’re happy & you know it, shout” verse, I stop after “shout”, put my hands up and she says in her little angelic voice “hurrr…. ay” It’s the cutest.
She also responds to “what do cats say?” Meeeeee owwwwww where she drops and raises the tone of the word
GCA says
I love love love two year olds and their singing. Still have videos on my phone of kid 1, at age 2, going ‘B, I, engeeoh and Bingo was his name-o’. Also, his first grade class just sang ‘Down by the Station’ for their school concert, and I cracked up because that was the first song he brought home from daycare when he was a tiny toddler — he kept saying ‘Dunbar ‘tation’ and it took us weeks to puzzle out what song he was demanding I sing.

My two year old requested the “poor meatball” song at bedtime this weekend. After she sang the two lines she knew about 15 times I finally figured out she meant “On top of spaghetti” and then proceeded to Google the lyrics and sang her to sleep. It was ridiculous and adorable at the same time.

Your daughter might like the song One Meatball, another worthy addition to the bereft meatball genre: https://rockremnants.com/2018/11/10/song-of-the-week-one-meatball-ry-cooder-josh-white/

One of my four year olds, in addition to having an opinion about her clothes, now has an opinion about mine. The other day she was standing in my closet and said “mommy these are the choices of what to wear…” and was not pleased when I didn’t want to wear a sparkly dress to take her to soccer class in 95 degree weather
Anon says
My 4 year old does this too. It’s hilarious. She’s so judgy about my clothes.

So sad about Roe. I guess I kind of thought things might change. In my state, the law is now only to save the mother, which is better than a lot of places.
Anon says
So so sad. My 4 year old daughter will have fewer reproductive rights in her 20s than my 70 year old mother did. Just beyond f-cking depressing.
Anon says
I had/am having such a visceral reaction to the news. Literally felt like a gut punch and like I’m going to be physically sick.
Anonymous says
I’m as disappointed as anyone about the SCOTUS decision, but as a small bright spot in a really dark cloud: my F-50 company just put out a statement that effective immediately, benefits are expanded to include travel for access to reproductive healthcare. Of course, people who work for a F-50 corp are probably not the ones who are most at risk from this decision, but it’s a start.
Anon. says
My F500 employer sent a similar notice a couple weeks ago as well.
Anonymous says
Yeah… don’t expect these benefits to last. I would bet a lot of money that in places like TX the GOP will make it very hard to offer this.
More Sleep Would Be Nice says
While I think this is the right move for optics and to signal public support…but I’ve also read that this is very hard to actually implement. Most women aren’t trying to submit their travel information and medical detail for reimbursement. And chances are, if they’re in the position to front the money, they are likely fine without getting reimbursed.

Oh, good! Abortion can just be another tax on the poor.
AnnOnn says
I had an abortion on November 1, 2021. It was medically necessary and saved my life. They didn’t call it an abortion when we were in the ER, signing paperwork and talking about the procedure, risks, and so forth – there was some other medical term used, the exact type of procedure (Karman aspiration), but I knew what it was. I was choosing to terminate a pregnancy and to save my life. I hope it will end up being the worst experience of my life, because I cannot imagine enduring much worse, and yet I would again make that decision 100 times over again. For me, for my family, for my living daughter so she could have a mom beyond the age of 3.
My heart breaks for the next woman who will be inevitably faced with the same medical emergency but will not have the same choice, the same rights as I did.
anon says
I am so sorry you went through that. And my heart also breaks for women who will be facing similarly impossible circumstances and decisions. It’s not fair.
Anon says
Right now, all of the bans (including Texas) carve out an exception for the life of the mother. I would hope that continues.
Anon says
Doctors don’t want to go to jail though, so they’ll err on the side of not terminating until it’s beyond clear the mother’s life is in danger, and by that point it may be too late. In practice, this will kill people, even with an official exception on the books.
Also I don’t trust the official exception to remain in all states. Some R senators are already saying their shouldn’t be one.
Anonymous says
Yes but what do they define as “life of the mother”? Is her life in danger in minutes? hours? weeks? years?
I have a fairly close mom friend who terminated (super, super early in the pregnancy, like days after testing positive) because she had severe HG in previous pregnancies and her doctors were concerned about her long term health (blood loss, anemia, extreme weight loss, brittle bones, etc) – would that have “counted”?
What about miscarriages that the body does not expel? They could turn septic and cause the mother to go into shock and die, but it could take days, weeks, or never happen at all.
I could go on.
Anonymous says
+1 to what everyone else has said, and this also affects the extent to which med students and residents in these states can actually get training.
Anon says
Yes i live in TX and at my last gyn appointment i asked my doctor (who also delivered my children) and she said it’s very hard to do her job and counsel patients the way she would like to. I have not read anything about what “saving the life of the mother” means, but I’m sure it’s intended to be narrowly construed. Like what if someone is raped and carrying the baby would lead the mother to committing suicide – I’d argue giving her an abortion would save her life, but i don’t think the TX legislature had that in mind
anonM says
Look up the Bei Bei Shuai case out of Indiana. No, they won’t save the mother. They’ll charge her with murder. They’ll be investigating miscarriages. This is worse than pre-roe.
If you are moved to donate, please take a look at National Advocates for Pregnant Women. They do great work and have been raising red flags on this issue for yearsssss.

These never work. If I have cancer and I’m pregnant do I have to be 50/60/80 percent likely survive the pregnancy? Who decides?
Countries in Europe with these types of exemptions have broadened their laws because women kept dying. These laws only save the woman if she is in the middle of bleeding to death at a hospital or has a ectopic pregnancy. Doctors don’t want to go to jail when there is any lack of certainty about death. And when you wait for certainty, women die.
