If you’ve had a little too much sun, soothe your skin with an after-sun lotion like this one.
Hawaiian Tropic’s After Sun Body Butter is blended with coconut oil, shea butter, and avocado oil for intense, long-lasting moisture. The coconut scent is like summer in a bottle — I would even use this in the dead of winter when my next beach vacation is months away.
This body butter is $10.99 at Target.

any dc area people who have seen the state fair exhibit at the renwick?
Talk to me about gun play. We have been supremely strict with our kids about gun play in that we don’t allow it at all– no nerf guns, no laser tag, no first person shooter video games, no water guns. Even making your fingers into a gun and pretending to shoot– not allowed. I know we are more extreme in our views than most people, but I really, really cannot abide the normalization of gun violence in our country and felt like the all-or-nothing approach was the easiest and clearest way to communicate that value.
Anyone who feels strongly about this found a lighter touch that works for you? Now that my youngest is 9 I feel like we can introduce some nuance here that will allow him to play with his friends more freely while still understanding this family value. (The older ones– girls– don’t care).
We have a new house and need blinds or curtains for every window. Any favorite sources or tips?
How do people manage little kid shoes? My city has one nice children’s shoe store where you can try on – but it’s expensive and the selection is limited. So once a season I go, get her feet measured to figure out her size, buy one pair, and order the rest online. But kids’ shoe sizing is so incredibly inconsistent – I got two pairs in the exact same size, one is really snug and the other is too big. Do you just order multiple sizes and return? Any specific recommendations for a 3yo with wider feet?
If you have a pool, what are you doing for meals when you host? What are you having people bring that actually helps (ie not just beer and chips) in the last week we’ve grilled hot dogs/burgers, both made and ordered pizzas, and done take out Chinese and I’m exhausted just thinking about hosting again this weekend. I know people will bring whatever we ask. Love having people over, but the cost, mess and unhealthy food is a lot. ideas? I want the evening to be about the pool, and socializing, not the food prep and cleanup.
Recommendations needed for the MOST fun inflatables/water toys. In a month we head to a cabin on a lake for a week. The lake is VERY quiet (no motorboats allowed, very few houses), which the adults love but the kids (10, 8, 4) could use a little extra fun. Kayaks and canoes come with the house but I’m looking for fun stuff for the kids to play with during swim time/ I have great memories of trying to stay up on those inflatable dolphins as a kid, and also a giant black inner tube that we would flip…but my intel is like 35 years old. Ideally I’d love one of those lily pads but they are a bit too expensive — I’m looking to spend about $200 total (and we will reuse them in future years; we go here annually).
Heading to a beach resort with out 18-month old soon. We don’t need a floaty, right? It seems like the conventional wisdom now is to always have a parent holding the child in the pool until they learn to swim?
Just a vent/AITA? A family friend came over for dinner last night. Her love language is gifts, and she often will get my toddler small toys or art supplies. Last night, she brought over a bluey beanbag chair. As soon as I saw it, I just immediately said we don’t have room for that and I don’t know where we could even put that. We live in a 1,200 square-foot house, and have a baby and toddler. Space is at a premium (which she knows), and objectively we don’t have room for it. The friend offered to keep it at her house for when we visit. But my toddler saw it and loves it, and would have freaked out if it was taken out of the house. So now it’s gonna be another thing I trip over in their room.
We left it as an agreement that she won’t buy large presents without asking. I feel bad for how I reacted, but we do don’t have room for this thing.
Can I ask a dumb question — what do YOU mean when you hit “emphasize” on a text?
My toddler has a cold and spends the entire night coughing. I so wish we had any kind of safe cough medicine to give him. His room is already naturally humid (52%) so can’t really do a humidifier. Is there anything else I can try? Nasal spray has never done that much for coughing for him but I could try it again I suppose.
