I’ve decided – for now – I’m tired of paying repair people $100+ for small repairs. Not for any other reason than I’m over it. We have to replace the gasket in our dishwasher and it’s like a $50 part I can get from a parts store (no Ama*on dupes!) and there are tons of online resources on how to do this; you don’t even need any tools per se!
What are some other quick fixes you do around your house? I’m not handy, and we already outsource a LOT due to work schedules, so I want to find like 5 things I know I can do. I don’t see myself caulking anytime soon.
at my kids’ school the ac is broken today (we live in TX, it is 90+ outside) and i got a call from school nurse saying you don’t have to come and get your kid, but she came to my office saying she was hot and dizzy. school is still open. am i insane if i go get my kid? we had a parent meeting at the school once when the AC was off in the evening and some parents walked out after 30 minutes bc they were just too hot so i feel badly that my kids are there all day… or is this insane of me?
Favorite rain and snow boots for fairly young toddlers (almost 2)? We’re expecting a big rain year and I’d like to get some boots that are still easy to walk in. We’re also going to the snow a couple of times and would like some boots for that too. Would you recommend just using rain boots with extra socks or getting something dedicated (for sledding and snow play?) I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled at the ski swap and/or Goodwill but there was nothing that worked last year so I’ll likely need to purchase new.
Any advice from folks who have switched from daycare to a nanny? I’m running the numbers, and once I have my second child, a nanny that does light housekeeping is the same cost or cheaper than daycare for 2 + house cleaners.
You may recall that I had some bad luck with childcare at the beginning of the year, so I’m a little gun shy now and have extra guilt about switching it up on my oldest yet again. But it sounds so nice to have the option to breastfeed instead of pump and not have to deal with all the daycare illness and have some grace if I don’t manage to get the bags packed and the kids ready so I can do a daycare drop off in time for me to get to work, especially given how often I’m solo parenting. Oh, and having that little extra flexibility on what housework gets done, since the cleaners aren’t helping me with dishes or laundry but the college kid I’m talking with is perfectly willing to do those things during the course of the day.
Sort of related to this, DD (11) has an after school activity where she’ll be picked up at 4:30 by our nanny or friend’s nanny and driven there and then the activity is 5:15 to 8:45. I want to pack her basically a quick dinner that she can wolf down before the activity. Any suggestions? She’s exercising so protein and actual food is a plus. I also don’t want it to be too messy and it has to be pretty quick? help me out!
(On saturdays she’s at this activity from 9:00 to 4:15 with only thirty minutes in there for lunch so I also need to pack something then – I’m assuming similar ideas will work)
