I bought tickets for the holidays to an overseas destination on American Airlines. I specifically purchased a Main Cabin fare instead of a Basic fare because it said it came with seat selection. I’m traveling with my family and I wanted us seated together.
The flight is being a operated by a partner airline and, even though the Main Cabin ticket lists seat selection in big font as a distinguishing feature between a Basic and Main Cabin fare, there’s a link to fine print that’s says partner airlines “may apply” a fee. The partner airline says I didn’t pay for seat selection and any dispute is with American. I would have understood that fine print as meaning that I might have to play more for extra leg room or certain seats, not to select a seat at all. America Airlines customer service agent says passengers “need to read the fine print more carefully.” American also say I’d get my seat for free as a Main Cabin fare if I had status on American, but that is nowhere in the fine print.
I think it’s super misleading that they charged me more for a ticket where I could select my seat only to find out that they say the ticket doesn’t include seat selection. That doesn’t seem like something you can bury in fine print with a vague disclaimer when it’s listed as a major feature.
Any suggestions for recourse? The partner airline wants to change $340 for selecting seats, so not a small amount of change.
How do you decide what activities you do as a family? My 4 year old will be in pre-K this year. Over the past year, we have done both soccer and swim, and she has enjoyed both. We also did dance, which she sort of liked but didn’t love (note: we didn’t do these all at the same time). Fall registration is coming up, and I’m thinking of doing swim on Saturday mornings and soccer (with an indoor option) on a weeknight from 5-6. We also have a newborn so I don’t want to overdo it on activities, but she is really active and does well with outlets for physical activity, especially as the weather gets bad and we aren’t outside as much. Just wondering how other people balance this – I know there is a lot of talk of overscheduling kids these days but last winter there was a phase where she did nothing because I missed the sign up period (early pregnancy brain…) and I felt like we spent too much time at home watching TV when she really could have used a structured outlet to run around.
I need ideas for prizes for a community event with lots of games/activities (think sack race, etc). Participants include all ages (preschoolers up to adults) so I’m looking for like one prize for an adult winner of something but also 8 prizes for X game for kids 4-8 or 6-12 etc. let me know if you have any great prize ideas!
We’re camping with our 21-month-old this weekend. It’ll be our first trip with him. We’re going to try to fit his pack and play in our tent (will test first!). Any other tips for this age? He’s a little…spirited but is a good sleeper at home.

Does anyone have any recommendations for nursing tops/bras? For my first baby, I got most of them from the Gap but I’m not very impressed with their selection right now.
Does anyone have good experiences to share about an inclusion classroom? I just found out that my kid was assigned to a 10-6 inclusion class for pre-K3 (10 normal kids, 6 special needs). I’m not excited about it, mainly cause my son’s birthday is right before the cutoff and the inclusion class is a mixed pre-K-3 and pre-k4 class. He could be in class with kids almost 2 years older.
This is so basic, but I need fresh ideas on how to manage the laundry. We do not have the money to throw at outsourcing this, so looking for feedback from folks who do this themselves at home, bonus points for those of you whose kids help out.
How frequently do you wash the sheets/towels? I know the common rule is once a week but honestly we have NEVER achieved this. We are four people with full and queen size beds. Each set is a whole load (or are you combining sets?) plus the towels are a separate load, five loads of laundry we’d finish just in time to do it all again… this is bonkers. What is your realistic sheets/towels routine?
Our clothes hampers are on about every other week rotation. DH and I have three loads (bleach, darks, lights) and the kids each have 2 loads (darks, lights) for a total of 7 loads of clothes.
This is too much laundry for only 4 people! What am I missing that would make my life easier (besides more money to outsource, or invest in a higher capacity machine).
First day of school and I was so excited for a quiet house. And demo has begun of the building opposite…
Kindergarten attendance question:
My daughter just started kindergarten. Her grandparents are going to take her on a special one time DisneyWorld trip for 4 week days in Sept, which I okayed.
We have a tradition of having a special birthday day where I take the day off work and pull the birthday kid from daycare to do fun activities. Last year her younger brother wanted her to join on his day which was really great for their relationship. For her birthday this year she had him join her special day too. His birthday is coming up on a Friday in August.
These are the only planned absences for the school year and I normally would follow the school calendar.
1) Do I keep her out of school for his birthday?
2) How do I communicate both absences to the school? (Be detailed vs vague etc)
I picked up an old Webster’s dictionary on the free shelf at the library, and it’s been a surprising hit with my kids- they use it to look up words while they’re reading Calvin and Hobbes. Just wanted to share!
