how old was your kid when you took them to their first movie in the theaters?
I posted late in the day yesterday about how I took my kids out of school for Disney and long weekend trips last year. I wanted to add some color to my feelings on this.
When I was in elementary school, my grandma asked my mom to take me out of school for a solo trip to Hawaii and my mom said no. I found out later. I totally understand why she said no and I don’t fault her in anyway. My grandma and I were close, though, and she died young. I remember this when I’m in conundrums like yours. I sure don’t remember the week of 4th grade while my grandma was solo in Hawaii, but I would have remembered if we were together.
Life is too short!
Hi – Having a meeting (not meet the teacher, but a meeting) with my kid’s future teacher at their new private school (entering 2nd). What should I wear?
For the person who responded to my prize question asking about what games we do, we’ve had the same games for at least 20+ years. Some examples are three legged race, sack race, egg toss, tug-o-war, pie eating contest, limbo, and lots of other kinds of races for different ages and some sportsy things.
Colleague whom I also know outside of work had a fire last night – their detached garage/garage apartment burned down. Sounds like a big bummer with lots of paperwork that could have been much worse. Nonetheless kids are sad their bikes and such gone. Colleagues car lost, etc. I want to drop off a care package this weekend. Any ideas? Would a box of cookies be weird? Breakfast items? Mostly just an Im sorry this happened to you this stinks package.
I have a minor gripe, but maybe someone can relate. I posted first day of school pictures of my kids, as one does. Several cousins commented about how pretty my 11-year-old daughter is. You know what, she is pretty! And good for her! But, these are the same people who were really critical of my appearance growing up and always “hinting” that I should change my hair, my makeup, my eyebrows, whatever. So it’s this weird feeling of being like, well, glad my daughter meets your approval, and ALSO, I kind of wish you hadn’t noticed. I hate that my daughter is entering the years when she’s going to be judged based on her appearance. Luckily for her, she is so much cuter that I was at that age. But still. I hate that people are watching.
These cousins are overall lovely adults, btw. They just happened to grow up in a very image-obsessed household, and it definitely showed at times.
When do your kids do homework? My fourth grader is going to have a bit of homework for the first time ever this year. I also have kindergarteners whom I need to keep occupied while I assist with homework. It seems like we should just do it immediately after school, right. All three are in baseball so our afternoon schedule changes daily.
Apologies if this has been discussed here and I missed it but can we talk about the flight that was cancelled because the toddler refused to buckle their seat belt?
The internet is all over the parents and maybe I’m alone here – but I actually kind of see how this could happen! A determined toddler + lap belt only + parents having to be buckled while trying to keep the kid buckled in.
Oooof.
What are your personal experiences with flying on a long flight (10-11 hours) with a three-year old specifically regarding a car seat (only asking about car sear!)? She has own before many times, but it’s been a while now.
I can see her sleeping better in a car seat, but I can also see her sleeping better on our laps. I just can’t decide which is the better way to go.
Experiences and thoughts, please!
Am I just having a tough time with this transition or should I switch daycares?
Our baby started daycare at 6 months. We picked this daycare because we liked the resources of a larger center and it seemed clean and welcoming. He had a great experience in the infant room; the teachers were all very cuddly with the babies but also tried to support independence.
Now he’s a year old and just moved to the walking babies room. He’s not walking yet but he’s too big and fast to stay with the little babies. The teachers say he’s adjusting well, but I’m not so sure. It’s a very structured day, it’s basically preschool. They won’t feed the kids outside of meal/snack times and there’s only one nap a day. LO isn’t used to eating on their schedule so he won’t eat when he’s supposed to and then he cries because he’s hungry but they won’t feed him. They don’t really cuddle the kids either. They’ll rub their back to offer comfort but they don’t let the kids sit on their lap to snuggle.
It seems so early to have kids in a strict classroom-like environment. I can’t imagine refusing to feed a hungry baby. But I don’t know anything about child development. Maybe he needs more structure? Does this sound normal to you for a one year old?
Hoping you all can help my PPA. My daughter starts daycare soon at 9 months. I’ve had some PPA about baby getting sick in the months after she was born, which I’m doing much better with now, but I think I’m now overly worried about her getting cold sores from other kids at daycare. Our daycare has great reviews and plenty of cleaning protocols etc, but I can’t help but worry about this, since it’s a virus she would have for life. I know plenty of people who do get cold sores and I know it’s not a big deal to them, and I haven’t even met the kids in her class, but I’m still getting a lot of anxiety over it. Not sure what I’m looking for, but anything to help calm me down would be very appreciated.
Why is there one app for grades, one app for announcements, one app for bus schedules and one app for after school programs????????
Sorry in advance for the novel, and thanks for any perspectives.
My 2yo and 4.5yo have been at a great daycare for ~2 years. We generally like the teachers/admins and feel they’re safe and well cared for. We need full-day care for work, so they’re there ~9.5 hours/day.
My 4.5yo moved to the oldest classroom ~4 months ago and seems to butt heads with the lead teacher, who is definitely on the stricter side. We’ve generally wanted to encourage her to adapt to different teacher styles, especially with kindergarten next year, although we do sometimes find this teacher’s rules a bit arbitrary (which we’ve never voiced in front of / to kid).
A few weeks ago, though, her behavior completely plummeted: far worse than anything we’ve seen ever from her, and especially vs her behavior over the past year. She went from sweet, goofy, caring, and generally age-appropriately cooperative to being extremely emotionally labile, whiny, pushing back on everything, breaking safety rules that have never been an issue, and hitting us and her sibling. Last night she screamed at full volume for an hour at bedtime for no real cause and simultaneously wouldn’t let me leave the room.
She’s worst with me, but does it with my husband and local grandparents too. We don’t know for sure that it’s school-related: daycare says she’s doing totally fine there, with no apparent behavioral change. But it seems worse on school days, and she’s been increasingly negative about school (yelling “School is BAD!” in the middle of an otherwise unrelated conversation). When we ask her in moments of calm how she’s feeling or if anything is bothering her, nothing really comes up.
We’re trying to figure out what, if anything, to change. We’ve asked daycare to let her nap in the next-younger classroom each day to see whether adding a nap back in helps. I’m also debating reducing her hours and supplementing with a nanny, but that feels like a huge change without knowing whether school is actually the cause. We also have a number of hesitations about having a nanny, but would do it if it was the clear best option for our kids. We don’t love the idea of changing schools either, since we haven’t been impressed with the alternatives and they generally don’t fit our work schedules as well, though we could consider it.
Any other ideas or perspectives? Has anyone experienced a similar sudden behavior change at this age? Did anything help?
