My 12 yo is home sick and asking to watch a rom com. We usually watch g rated movies because of her little siblings but alone I think we can give the girl what she wants!

What is a good romcom appropriate for a 12 year old? This is not my preferred genre and most movies in this category that I remember from the 90s have not aged well!

A niche question but you never know! I work in NYC in the village and currently commute from Hoboken which is an easy Path trip. But I don’t love the air quality here, the lack of green space, even trees being scare, the noise, the crowds. It’s not where I want to raise my baby. But I’m also a single mom and while I’m doing perfectly fine, I can’t afford to buy a million dollar house. Any thoughts on where to move in NJ that might still be a reasonable enough commute, preferably under an hour?

I had my 20 month old home sick yesterday, and oh boy. She marched around the house picking up everything she could find and demanding a new activity every 7 minutes. We did two park visits and one additional stroller walk. I loved it but I was also exhausted! Good reminder that I’m so glad she’s in a lovely daycare most of the time!

This is a very musically oriented crew, and since the topic of the week is hobbies – can you talk to me about children’s choirs? My 6 year old loves to sing. Walks around singing constantly. I sort of assumed singing came later, and signed him up for piano – thinking it would teach him to read music, and then he can build into singing later. He absolutely hated piano, and the teacher actually asked us to take a break until he’s a little older. So now I’m a little stuck – do I shop piano teachers and find a better fit (not his preference) or help him find a children’s choir (his preference) or voice lessons (I think he’d like the social element of a choir more). Thoughts? recommendations? I’m in Northern Virginia if you have a relevant place to look.

Seems like my post-vasectomy pregnancy scare was real, but likely chemical as the lines have been disappearing. Going to get an ultrasound if my period doesn’t return given the ectopic history. Still, home test and an hcg blood draw confirmed I was pregnant so it might be time to look in to tubal ligation or adding barrier methods.

Or, since I’m a little bit sad about the pregnancy not sticking, maybe I should have a talk with my husband once the hormones have settled.

Continuing the hobby conversation from yesterday, I’m always looking for examples of mothers who maintain more intensive hobbies. The blogger Hungry Runner Girl is a good one – four kids, runs every day, 2:40 marathoner (or somewhere around there). She has said she does most of her miles before her kids wake up so she can be free for them, but she also takes her family to her races and otherwise has the family participate to a significant degree. I’ve always admired that. Then on the other side, I have a friend who kept up skiing after kids by skinning uphill with babies in packs (possible when you live in a CO mountain town). She said it’s hard to find the time to do it but that on days they’re up very early anyway, why not go do something like that?

Not usually a sucker for Instagram quotes but I did like one I saw lately – “the more you enjoy your motherhood, the more they’ll enjoy their childhood.” That’s going to look different for all of us but for the moms who do get a lot of satisfaction from hobbies, I think it’s something worth considering when prioritzing family time.
