Did anyone see the mothers (and fathers) testifying in the Camp Mystic hearings this week? I was blown away by their strength under the most intense pressure and grief conditions one could imagine. It was very hard to watch but very powerful. The way those mothers fought – that’s the kind of mother I want to be for my son.

My 6 year old is getting into chess – has been playing with other kids at after-school care and is constantly begging us and other family members to play chess with him. We do not own a chess set. We borrowed a storytime chess set and that has been really fun for my younger kid to read through, but the 6 year old is already graduated from that type of thing. Any suggestion for a home chess set? I was thinking about getting a travel set so that the pieces stick to the board, but also have considered getting a “nice” real chess set that feels hefty and beautiful. Or both! Thoughts?

What shoes do you wear to splash pads? I’m getting my toddler some Keen-like shoes for the summer, and it made me wonder what I should wear. None of my sandals are waterproof, so I’ll need something new

Any recent happy or cute kid things? It’s been a bleak week and I could use some cheer.

Well, the weather is supposed to stay cold and maybe even rain next weekend so we are holding a chilly pool party in Houston tomorrow!

It’s at a club so limited in ability to heat the pool warmer than 83 degrees. We told guests to bring a change of clothes since there’s a playground and basketball hoop adjacent. Planning to bring along a soccer ball and cones for goals for the small grassy area. Any other ideas for games or toys we could bring for a bunch of seven year olds if they get too cold swimming…? There’s 30 kids so playground should do a lot but would like some more options too!

Also please think happy sunshine-y thoughts for us tomorrow! Hoping the birthday girl still has fun above all else!

DH and I have a disagreement about prioritizing and budgeting for travel, and I need some insight. DH and I did a lot of travel–including international–pre-kids and pre-covid. Since having kids (now 3 and 6), our travel has been 2-3 hour drives to nearby lakes or state parks, not extravagant. We took one trip to Florida with in-laws which everyone still talks about. I started a new job with increased pay and travel discounts, and I’d love to travel more with our kids. We had planned a domestic spring break trip, but ultimately canceled because my husband didn’t want to spend the money. Given TSA lines at the time, that was a good choice. I’d love to plan a summer international trip to an easy destination like England/Scotland (native language, familiar foods, our kids love cities) but my husband wants to keep the budget under $3k. That simply is not feasible even if we had amazing flight prices. We’re scrupulous budgeters, and we’ve had periods of uncertain salaries, so I understand his hesitation. But we’re in a solid financial position now (retirement, college funds, emergency fund). I really value travel and cultural exploration, for my kids especially, which seems to be in tension with his value for need for monetary security. I feel like we’re talking past each other. Any advice? (We aren’t resort or cruise people, so those aren’t good alternatives for us.)

Morning moms board! I posted on the regular board this week and got some great general ideas but hoping for some specific ideas. I’m 40, single, no kids. My nieces stay with me one weekend a month. Ages 9 and 11. I try to do ‘one outing per day’ (like a park, science center, etc.). I’m struggling to entertain the 11 year old. She wants things she can do by herself. She gets bored with reading after a while, I have misc craft supplies but she gets bored, and I have purchased craft kits but those are really pricey for just one use (and 30-60 min). I can’t entertain her the entire weekend. I have games but most are two-player. She isn’t a big puzzle fan. I’m having her cook more with me. I have an urban apartment, she can’t really go outdoors alone in my area. I could spend about $200 especially if items could be used all year. I believe it’s good for kids to be bored, but honestly, it’s annoying to hear her say it 20x an hour and my place could use older-kid items. The 9 year old is easy, she still plays with dinosaurs and legos. Any specific ideas for the 11 year-old? Links appreciated!
