Gap has some great office-friendly pieces if you’re on a budget.
This modern blazer is updated with sharp shoulders and an oversized silhouette designed for layering. It’s also made from a stretchy, machine-washable fabric, so you don’t have to worry about dry-cleaning bills. Some commenters suggest sizing down given the roomy cut.
Gap’s BiStretch Oversized Blazer is $55 (down from $138) and comes in sizes XXS-XXL as well as petite and tall.

How annoyed should I be that a relatively high-profile person in my field cited my work in a book and left my name out of the citation? This is not an “et al” citation, and the citation is to a major piece of work that is well known. I find the omission mostly amusing and further proof of this person’s work habits. The one colleague I told was pretty much outraged on my behalf, and pointed out that this won’t show in my citation count.
We’re moving so I’ve been touring a lot of daycares and elementary schools. The different philosophies and my reaction to them are fascinating to me. I’m much more drawn to play based than I would have expected. Which tracks, my family always jokes that I’m a much more relaxed parent than they were expecting me to be.
How do you parent? What do you look for in childcare/education? Is it what you expected?
If you had one free afternoon and evening in London next week, how would you spend it? Assume you’re staying in Central London and can expense dinner.
Trying to crowd source some ideas so I don’t end up curled in bed with room service at 7 PM like I usually would on a work trip.
We’re having a park birthday party for our toddler and have some of the ubiquitous birthday plastic tablecloth to put on the picnic tables. Has anyone figured out a good way to keep that kind of tablecloth from blowing off the in the wind? We have some spring-loaded clips, but last year they just popped off.
Anyone used a kid’s hair tutorial?
My daughter is about the age where she really wants to start doing her own hair. She has long, gorgeous hair which I have done in pretty intricate/elaborate styles since she was a toddler. It’s partially our special time together and also partially me overcompensating (throwback to yesterday’s post) for the fact that I felt like my hippie mom treated me wanting to do hair/makeup as vanity and the fact that at 40 I just *now* am able to not feel ‘vain’ for taking 10 minutes in the morning to feel pulled together with hair and makeup.
My rule is it has to be clean, brushed, and should be appropriate for whatever activity we are doing – I know I’m doing the things to help her be autonomous. She’s always watched me do it and tells me she ‘knows what to do’, but… does anyone have any (kid friendly!) hair tutorials I could share with her. Even better if it’s for curly hair. Today’s look that she went to school with could use some… polish. I’m definitely extra sensitive to not being totally controlling while also remembering how hard it was for me to feel like I could take time to do my hair without being ‘shallow’.
Car Recommendations –
We need to upgrade DH’s beater of a car, he’s interested in a Subaru Ascent. Any feedback?
For context – 3 elementary aged kids and we already have a minivan, he does half of the drop-off/pick-ups and we’d like to be able to use either car as a family car on weekends, but the minivan is our hauler.
Budget is around $30K – he has an Outback now and we manage 3 across but it’s tight and even as we swap car seats for boosters we want more space.
Tips for sucking it up at work? I’m leaving a job I’ve been in for years, and gave a long notice period. Now I’m down to about a month and all of a sudden it is getting so hard to be motivated. I gave this long notice so as to be fair to clients and my employer, to leave on a good note and keep doors open for the future, etc. But how do I stay on track so I don’t undue all those good things I was seeking by giving this notice period? Idk, maybe there are no hacks, but has anyone tried very hard until the very end and had it pay off down the road?
Settle a low-stakes debate: would you send a cold hot dog in a kid’s lunch box? My husband thinks it’s gross, but it’s what my son asked for. Thanks!
