Happy Salmon game box

My youngest loves games of all sorts, so this quick-moving game ended up in his Easter basket.

In Happy Salmon, each player has a stack of action cards and must shout out their actions to find a match, then complete the action with a partner. The first to finish all their cards wins! This lively game is fun for small groups of three to eight, ages six and up.

Happy Salmon is available at Amazon for under $15.

I just realized admin professionals day is next week. I have been in charge of celebrations in the past, and we’ve done breakfast or afternoon sweet snacks. However, three of our assistants are vocal about being on glp 1s so I don’t think a food celebration is the best idea. Any ideas how to mark the day or gifts to give them?

Where would you have your almost 3 year old sleep on vacation? She also has a 6 year old sister, and we’ll be traveling as a family of 4. She’s small and is happily still in her crib at home. We have a room with two queens. We could get a crib but …. that just takes up so much room. Am I crazy to think she can handle sharing a bed with mom and/or dad if we use pillows or towels as bumpers? We did not fully think this through until now…

My kiddo is on a medication that requires monthly visits to the pediatrician. We have a HD plan, so we’ve been paying the entire amount for each visit the last few months. I just got the invoice for the April visit and it’s about $50 more than Jan/Feb/Mar. So, exact same appointment. . .coding is identical. . . amount billed to insurance is the same. . .same plan year. . . but the insurance “adjustment” is lower. All in the same billing year with the same policy. We are lucky that this is affordable for us, but man, American insurance is a confusing nightmare maze. End rant.

This 100% outs me, but whatever: 8 year old is going to Australia with DH in June for 2.5 weeks to visit his sister and her family. It’s a really exciting trip for everyone. I’m unable to go for several reasons, including work and also having a 2.5 year old that would be miserable on a flight that long. They’re going to Adelaide for the first half and then Sydney for the second half.

Anyway, 8YP DD also has a bday in two weeks. Is there anything you’d recommend getting her either for the trip or for the long-haul flight to make it more comfortable? She has a basic neck pillow and i got them foot slings at the recommendation of a friend. She has an ipad, wired headphones. She’s a fairly seasoned air-traveler but her longest flight to date is 5 hrs. Boston>LA>Sydney>Adelaide is long for anyone. I also considered giving her like $100 USD to bring with her to buy “whatever she wants” while there. We’d let her get souvenirs regardless but thought she might find it fun to have her “own” money. And, as I’m typing this, I wonder if we should get her this in AUS dollars… where does one get foreign currency these days?

Beyond gift recs, I’ll take any suggestions you have about how to make her as comfortable as possible. Pillow? Better neck pillow/donus (TRTL was suggested)? Other ideas? I’ll probably post again closer to travel but will take any thoughts now! TIA!

Kid podcast recs, please! This summer we will have more than an hour in the car each day between camps and swim team, and my 11 yo loves to go deep on a podcast. The sweet spot is nonfiction with a good sense of humor. Last summer we did the entire Greeking Out catalog (and have since listened to it twice more). We’ve also done all the Wow in the World, Story Pirates and Brains On, if that helps.

Happy Friday! Parenting is hard, what are some cute/fun things about your kids right at this moment in time?

For me:

– Kid #1 – was gifted a soccer kit – jersey, socks, shorts. It is now the only thing he wants to wear and he gently puts it in the washing machine with us and asks for when it’s ready. Grandma is traveling and just sent us a photo that she got him a little national team soccer kit from the country she’s visiting. Kid will be so excited!

– Kid #2 – Our family calendar has a lot of birthdays on it. Kid actively looks at the calendar and asks ‘Oh hey! Can we send a video to X’. It’s validating that my goal of making sure the all the kids learned emotional labor is working.

– Kid #3 – A friend’s 40th had party favors of their favorite books – kid grabbed A Wrinkle in Time. After some eye-rolling once they realized Mom wanted them to read it, they started it under duress but quickly fell in love. This is now one of many of Mom/Dad’s favorite childhood books that kid has loved.

I posted on the main page a few weeks ago and got somewhat crucified, so trying again here. My dad told me about a month ago that he is retiring on June 30. He’s a physician and is the last one still practicing from his medical school class (he graduated almost 51 years ago). We live flying distance away. I cannot go there on that date as we have a trip planned somewhere else, but have a trip planned to visit him two weeks later. He can buy himself whatever he wants and is generally not a things person. Anyone have any ideas how to make the occasion? He’s has some pretty long term relationships with some of his patients (one knitted by kids blankets when i was pregnant, etc) but i obviously can’t contact them due to HIPPA. He used to have his own practice but sold his practice and joined his current one 10+ years ago, but I’ve never actually met any of his colleagues bc i live far away.

What’s protocol if you find a tick on your kid? I’m waiting for a call back from the pedi. I live in MA so we have lots of nasty deer ticks up here. We just pulled a huge one out of the base of our 2.5 year old’s scalp. I’ve never seen a tick so large (the size of a pea) or so embedded. Had to have been there for several days. I don’t know how we missed it – we washed her hair last night! Sigh. I did save it and it’s in a zip lock bag at the moment.

I will 100% defer to the pedi (whenever I get a call back…) but curious if anyone has experience or practical recommendations in the interim. I think I got all of it but there’s a decent sized hole in the spot where it was with a dark-ish center. Maybe I left some tick behind? Shudder. That was gross and impressive all at once…

I’m looking to cut back/eliminate my nightly glass of wine. I enjoy seltzer waters and teas but they’re getting old.
I’d like to try a nonalcoholic wine to give me that feeling of sipping a nice crisp Chardonnay or full-bodied Cab without the health effects and disrupted sleep (even on one glass! Ugh)

Any recommendations for good ones? I don’t like sweet or bubbly wines, and I’m not a cocktail drinker either.
