Does anyone have a kid who gets sunburns despite diligent sunscreen application? I swear I know how to apply sunscreen; I’m super pale and haven’t burned since I was a teen who didn’t bother with SPF. We use protective clothing as much as possible and for the areas that aren’t covered by clothing we slather her in SPF and reapply regularly. We try to stay out of the sun from 10-2 when possible. And yet she still ends up with red splotchy skin on a regular basis. The burns are mild, minimal pain and and usually fade overnight, but I still feel enormous guilt about having a kid who is constantly getting sunburned. I’m not sure what the solution is though.

Do you use a chemical or physical sunscreen? My sister has pale skin and prefers physical.
We use Ombrelle Active Sport SPF 60 for our sensitive skin kids and find that effective. We use the sensitive skin version on no. Active days but it sweats off on active days.
Is it a sunburn or a rash? It is possible to have a sun allergy.

Yes, my son gets burned right below his eyes very frequently. He’s not even THAT pale–he is capable of tanning and doesn’t have big problems elsewhere on his body, but his cheeks are a problem. He tends to rub them when he swims to get the water out of his eyes, and I think he rubs it off. We try to reapply constantly and have tried different kinds of subscreens and sunscreen sticks, and he has goggles he sometimes wears, but it is a struggle. His cheeks have blistered and peeled before, more than once, when he was at an all-day watersports day camp where he was in charge of reapplying (he did poorly). I feel tremendous guilt about it. My husband and I have had fights about it, and I had anxiety about it that made me miserable when he was doing that camp – thank god he hated it and is not going back. I just wanted to let you know you are not alone! I try to remind myself that each sunburn does not actually guarantee skin cancer, which is I think where my anxious brain goes.

It sounds like it could be a sun allergy? It’s an autoimmune reaction so the redness is not indicative of UV radiation damage. Antihistamines like Benadryl help, but it goes away on its own without treatment in a few days. Apparently its more common in people who suffer from eczema and other allergies.
