4.5 years after my 2nd child, I’d like to do something about my stomach that looks like I’m 3 months pregnant still. I’m a size 2 so pretty small all around except here. do I need a trainer? what kind of exercise do I need to be doing or what should I be eating? also the permanent stretch marks and wrinkling around my belly button make me self conscious but I doubt that can ever improve. it definitely runs in the family..
Anon says
Might you have diastasis recti? A physical therapist can help with that!
Kate says
Seconding the PT recommendation! For stretch marks, some people have had success with Bio‑Oil, and for the loose skin around your belly button, a mini tummy tuck is probably the only thing that could address that (not recommending, just saying!).
Anon says
how do you know if you have diastis recti? doctor or PT? what should I search to find a qualified PT?
anon says
Your obgyn can diagnose it and a PT can work with you to treat it.
Anonymous says
If you don’t have DR, tummy tuck.
Anon says
You can do PT for sure. If you want to exercise at home, there are a million at home workout programs that address things like DR if you think that applies to you. I like Get Mom Strong.
Anonymous says
Not the most original here, but if you don’t have DR, I would start pilates. It will help you strengthen your overall core, which will lay the foundation for anything you do that’s more targeted at the tummy weight. It’s also just great for your overall health to have a strong core, broadly speaking (back, butt, etc). It helps protect against injuries and the like.
Anon says
The Every Mother app is excellent for short workouts addressing diastasis recti

Reporting back from tonsil and adenoid removal surgery! It went great and my kid was back in school in about 6 days, although we kept it short with no aftercare for a few days. We were prescribed a steroid for three days plus an optional 7 day antibiotic, which we did. And also kept a week long regimen of rotating tylenol and motrin every 3 hours, around the clock, including overnight which was key for keeping the throat stretched out and swallowing regularly. Surgery wasn’t until 1:30PM, so they couldn’t eat or drink all day which was surprisingly not as big of a deal as I thought it would be. We don’t allow much juice or screentime, so having both of those in unlimited quantities seemed to outweigh the pain of surgery, lol. Right now (slightly less than 2 weeks out) they are basically back to normal.

Great news! Thanks for sharing. My son is going in on Friday and I will be happy to have this behind us.
Did you notice any changes to his sleep, behavior or anything else of note?
Anonymous says
Honestly no- the one interesting thing is a voice change (it is higher). That is supposed to go back to normal within a few more weeks.
Anonymous says
Interesting! Ok thanks for sharing.

My almost-6-yo is having a birthday party at our house this weekend. Just three friends (plus his big sister and her +1), and he chose a “Penguin Pajama Party” theme (he adores penguins, and also wearing pajamas). Any fun penguin-related ideas for crafts or games? Since it’s so few kids I’m willing to do something marginally more elaborate (but am also happy to just let them play for two hours). Party is from 10-12 and we’ll have muffins/bagels, and then a penguin ice cream cake.
Boston Legal Eagle says
I hope you have the Penguin Dance (specifically by Jack Hartmann) playing on a loop in your house like we do…No ideas, but it sounds cute! Definitely a more manageable number of children, esp at their ages.
Anon says
Pinkfong (the maker of Baby Shark) also has a penguin dance. It’s annoying but very catchy.
Spirograph says
If you have any slippery floors in your house, I’m pretty sure you are required to do penguin belly slides…
OOO says
Tie kids’ legs together with strips of cloth, and tie their arms to their sides so they walk like a penguin. Then do some silly activities like dancing, a race, obstacle course, keep a balloon in the air, etc.
Add in some general winter-themed activities too, like a hot cocoa bar, igloo tent, making snowflakes, snow globe, etc.
OOO says
For the snow globes you can get the ones in the link below, plus fake snow and little penguin figurines to put inside. Make them waterless snow globes to avoid mess.

Maybe play Don’t Break the Ice? There is also a cute Penguin themed LEGO kit that’s a food truck (snow cones or juice or something). Depending on the kids, this could be a fun activity. You could buy two kits and have them work in pairs to put them together. Then send each friend home with a kit (one would be totally unassembled). I think they’re $15 each. But I also think just letting them play is totally fine.
DLC says
Do you have the game Protect the Penguin? I think there’s a version also called Don’t Break The Ice.
There is something very meta about a penguin ice cream cake!
Anonymous says
Penguin Pajama Party is the best theme ever! I want to go to.
Anon says
purchase inexpensive penguin stuffed animals and boxes on amazon, can add a link to the ones i purchased, cut “doors” out of the boxes and have an ‘adopt a penguin’ party and have the kids decorate houses (igloos) for the stuffies with stickers, markers, etc. oriental trading also has a bunch of penguin themed crafts. alternatively, purchase a penguin shaped cookie cutter, bake some cookies in advance and let the kids decorate them?
Anon says
A friend did adopt a stuffy for a party and made really cute adoption certificates for all the kids to fill out with stuffy’s name, age, other key details
AwayEmily says
aw you all are the best, I love these ideas so much. Wavering between snow globes and adopting a penguin. And will definitely put on a penguin playlist.
Fall Break plans? says
Any suggestions for a fall break trip the last week in September leaving from Atlanta? I’d prefer a driving trip, but I’m up for a 1-2 hour flight. Kid will be newly 4. We usually do active and outdoorsy trips. We all have passports.
Savannah, Charleston, florida have been done several times.
Don’t think kiddo is quite old enough to make DC worth the cost.
Anon says
Destin/Miramar Beach is only about a 5 hour drive for you and is lovely in late September. I think Great Smoky Mountain National Park would be great.
If you want to fly, New England is lovely at that time of year. Burlington, Vermont and the Acadia region would be my top recs for kids that age if you like active/outdoorsy.
DLC says
Second Smoky Mountains! We went to the quieter side (Townsend) and it was pretty relaxed vs being in Gatlinburg.
Though as a DC person, I do think DC is pretty great for younger kids too.
Spirograph says
+1 to both Smoky Mountains and to DC with young kids. We stayed at Douglas Lake, TN, spent a couple days on a boat with friends, did a day trip to Gatlinburg, and did a couple day hikes. If you want to lean into hiking, I’d stay closer to the mountains, but the lake was beautiful. Other random things that might be of interest in bad weather: The Forbidden Caverns and also the Bush’s Baked Beans museum (no factory tours, sadly)
September is a wonderful time to visit DC, weather-wise, and usually most of the tourist crowds have dispersed by then.
Anonymous says
A lake in the mountains nearby
anon says
We loved Jellystone Golden Valley last summer with our 3.5 and 6 year olds. Stayed in an air-conditioned cabin, rented a golf cart, spent time at the pool, mini golf, lake, gem mine, playground etc… Bring your own food and “camp” in the loosest sense.
Anon says
Bermuda is only a 2.5 hour nonstop flight for you, and is incredible (beautiful beaches, interesting caves). My kid was a bit older when we went, but I think it be great with a preschooler.
Anonymous says
oooooh we went to Bermuda last year and loved it! We were there in the spring before the water had warmed up enough for adults to want to be in the ocean, but I’d bet September is nice for swimming.
Anonymous says
But also hurricane season
Anon says
Hurricane season in Bermuda is much less severe than in the Caribbean. They rarely get direct hits and when they do it’s not typically devastating. We’ve gone to Bermuda several times in September/October and I typically avoid going to the Caribbean (except the ABC islands, which aren’t in the hurricane belt) from August-October.
OP says
We just went to the Caribbean for a week, otherwise I would be all over this! Costa rica is on the to do list as well.
Anon says
my 5 year old often pees herself when she laughs too hard. should i be concerned about her pelvic strength?
Anon says
I would ask the doctor and see what they recommend. From an adult perspective, that kind of leaking can also be from tightness, like if she sits with her legs crossed all the time or something like that. In hindsight I think I can trace my pelvic floor dysfunction back to doing that as a kid. You might be able to introduce yoga or something like that to help.
SF says
there are pediatric pelvic floor therapists although very hard to find. I have names in norcal and socal, if you happen to be located on the west coast.
Anonymous says
Definitely raise with the doctor, and also consider if there is any possibility of constipation.
AnonM says
Look up giggle incontinence with kids. Most likely not a huge deal at 5, but worth keeping an eye on.
Anon says
Anyone have a recommendation for kid-friendly afternoon tea in Manhattan? Taking my 6 year old to NYC soon and would like to do a nice tea before a Broadway matinee (Aladdin).
Anonymous says
Alice’s tea cup! They sprinkle a little bit of “fairy dust” (sparkles) and the kids can wear fairy wings while they are there. My 5 year old loved it. Not super close to Broadway theaters, but not too far.
Anon says
Alice’s tea cup in the UWS.
Anon says
They do a special madeline themed tea at the Carlyle Hotel. Not at all close to broadway. But pretty magical. The tea is done at Bemelmans where the walls are fully muraled by Bemelmans himself.
NYCer says
The Madeline’s Tea is usually only on weekends in November and December.
Movie ideas for 10 year old girls says
My almost 10 year old is hosting a sleepover for her birthday. Suggestions for a good movie? Friends birthday parties recently involved going to Barbie and Wonka. She suggested the eras movie, but I’m not sure a 3 hour viewing is going to be conducive to ever getting them to sleep.
Mary Moo Cow says
What about something older, like The Parent Trap or Freaky Friday remake? Or a childhood classic, Troop Beverly Hills?
Anon says
I would do the 1999 Parent Trap. I love that movie – one of the rare times the remake is better than the original. It helps that the houses/architecture are amazing.
Anon says
i love these 3 suggestions. the Eras movie isn’t a terrible idea if they do it a bit earlier in the night and get some energy out dancing/singing. Idk if Princess Diaries is too juvenile, A Cinderella Story. Is something like 13 Going on 30, Mean Girls or Bring It On too old? Yes Day, Pitch Perfect, Little Women
Anon says
There aren’t a ton of new tween movies out right now so I’d go older – Princess Bride, Hugo (Adventures of Hugo Cabret), Neverending Story, or any of the Studio Ghibli films.
OP says
That’s kind of what I was thinking. Older would be fun. Needs to be live action because they want to feel grown up haha. So many of the old movies I thought were fun seem sort of questionable now (Adventures in Babysitting has the whole playboy plot point, Girls Just Want to Have Fun has that tune in tokyo joke…)
THese are good ideas though! Keep them coming please! :)
Anon says
I’m not good with current stuff but my almost 10 year old has liked these older movies: Princess Bride, 13 going on 30, Matilda (movie or Musical), E.T., Goonies, Adventures in Babysitting, Annie, Back to the Future. Also Spaceballs.
Anonymous says
Let her watch the eras tour. It’s not quite 3 hours and they can start it while eating pizza and cake
Anon says
+1
OP says
i like this idea but we’re actually doing hibachi in our driveway, so there’s entertainment at dinner. I do think eras may be fun – she’s actually not a huge swiftie (just likes it because her friends do) but would work well as background noise for them playing around anyways. Coming around to that.
DLC says
We just had a bunch of 12 year olds over for a sleepover party last weekend and they watched
– a non stop stream of tiktok videos on YouTube
– howl’s moving castle
– Brooklyn 99.
(Not what I would have picked but also not where I wanted to use my limited capital with my tween.)
And the next day they went to the theatre to see Mean Girls.
Last year they watched Disenchanted and Megan (however you spell it.)
Anonymous says
When I went to see the Eras movie in theaters because my friend is a huge Swiftie (I am a good friend), there was a birthday party in the theater (around 10 year-olds) and the parents let the kids dance down front in their sequins. They barely watched because they were having so much fun doing silly dances.
