Since becoming a mom, a zipper (or something similarly easy) is essential for shoes — it seems like I’m always running out the door with the kids and throwing on my own shoes as an afterthought. These casual booties have AMAZING reviews at Zappos and Nordstrom, come in a bunch of nice colors (we’re featuring the burgundy over at Corporette) and, huzzah, have a zipper. Nice. They’re $110 at Zappos, Nordstrom, and Amazon. ‘Kerri’ BootieSales of note for 4.18.24

My mom is staying with us to watch the kiddos and I am going on an all-day date with my husband for the first time in two years. I have NO clothes for this. I have work clothes for a formal office (navy suits/pantyhose), yoga pants, and law school sweatshirts.
We are going to have brunch, go to a museum, walk around, have drinks at a very fancy bar, and then late dinner at a more casual restaurant. Weather in the high 60s. I have time today to pop out to a Rent the Runway store or a Nordstrom or a Target. What do I buy?
Willing to spend some $$ since we don’t have to pay a babysitter (thanks Mom!) and I would like my husband to remember that I am an actual human woman rather than a lawyer/mother automaton.

aww i’m envious of your planned day! i always struggle with the day-to-night dress…. i would probably go with dark (maybe even black wax-coated) jeans with a low heeled boot so you can actually make it through the day…. and a flowy silk sleeveless blouse with a jacket over it…. So you can take the jacket off for drinks and dinner and feel flirty/fun.

What about this dress? With casual shoes for casual events and with fancy shoes/blingy earrings for very fancy bar?

I feel goofy buying maternity clothes because I’m only 14 weeks, but I’m b**b-ing out of all my shirts, bras, dresses and am just starting to show.
Before pregnancy, I was a size 12 and curvy/hourglass. My work wardrobe consisted pretty much exclusively of sheath dresses that were (appropriately tailored) form fitting. Many don’t fit any more, and the few blouses I have barely fit across my chest (belly band is helping my work pants situation for the time being).
What’s the best strategy for buying clothes, bras, etc? Should I just size up for a while? Bite the bullet and buy some maternity stuff? I’m striking out/overwhelmed. Would love to avoid spending tons of money on a new wardrobe, but I’m not sure what the best alternative is, if any.

We sound similarly sized. Sizing up worked for a few weeks- I found some pants at NY&Co that worked well. But at some point soon, you’ll need real maternity clothes. Check out consignment sales and stores. I had to get a few new bras, but mostly to accomdate an increased band size. If your cup size is staying consistent, you can buy a bra band extender that allows you to use your current bras. FWIW, my rib cage permanently expanded with pregnancy so going back to my old bras wasn’t an option.

I found it best to buy a few things that are 1-2 sizes up, but in flexible silhouettes. For instance, I wouldn’t get a sheath dress in a size up, but I would get a trapeze or A-line dress in a larger size. I found I did pretty well to get a loose dress that fit my top half that looked like a tent, but then to put a non-maternity fitted blazer over it. Add tights and you’re good for office-wear. The loose fitting clothes are nice to have post-partum while you’re still getting back into your old stuff.

Sizing is up is nice, because these clothes tend to also work for the post-partum period when you don’t fit into your old clothes yet because you have baby weight or BF b**b s (unless you are one of those people that looses the weight before you go back to work. I was never one of those people). Like PP said, keep it to forgiving silhouettes. I still have some of my size up clothing in rotation, my youngest child is 21 months, ha.
I found that the maternity clothes I bought this early were too small for me by the end, so I would try to hold off for a few more weeks if you can.

+1. I’ve needed the sized up ones on the other end.

It’s my first pregnancy (well technically second since I miscarried last time) and I think I’m driving myself crazy. I’m only 6.5 weeks so nausea comes, and also some cramping, but every time i feel a cramp or don’t feel nauseous i’m nervous that there is something wrong. I had an ultrasound earlier this week and another one scheduled for a week from today, but any suggestions to keep my mind at bay until then? I called the doctor and they told me that it can be totally normal for pregnancy to come and go, but I’m like scared to go to the bathroom for fear I’ll see blood. How do I stop obsessing? A week from now seems like a very long time…. They said I can come in for the ultrasound earlier next week, but my husband is out of town for work
ElisaR says
what you’re feeling is totally normal….every visit to the bathroom was like “ok. we’re ok.” i’m sorry i don’t have a good solution as to how to keep your mind off it. i basically felt that way constantly for the first 6 months and didn’t get truly “excited” about everything until the baby arrived.
hang in there. rent terrible movies, binge watch something engaging….it’s kind of hard having your husband out of town since that’s the person you are going through this with!

I also miscarried my first, then had a very difficult twin pregnancy– I was nervous every. time. I peed. for that WHOLE second pregnancy. Would there be blood??? I agree with trying to keep your mind off things, and also just knowing and accepting that really, truly, there’s nothing you can do. I just had to let go of any sense of control at all. It helped me be really chill for the problems later, and honestly, letting go of any sense of control is pretty good preparation for parenthood. I suspect my husband and I parent the twins like most people parent their second child for this very reason. Not dead? Everything is fine!

mine is twins too! we just learned that earlier this week. trying very hard to let go of everything!

Any advice on dealing with shortness of breath in the third trimester? I’m 32 weeks and I cannot WAIT to be able to take a deep breath again post-pregnancy. Some days I’m okay and other days, like today, it’s really challenging.

I feel you — 33 weeks here. Swimming provides (temporary) relief for all that ails me.

No good advice but I am also so very tired of sounding out of breath on conference calls. I feel ridiculous. For me sometimes just getting in different positions or putting my arms up could help. The more upright I could get the better. 37 weeks now and it’s getting a little better as she descends but it’s still hard.
