Seasickness for Kiddos says
I’m going on a whale watch with my 6 year old tomorrow. I’m a seasoned sailor and not worried about sea sickness for myself but I recognize that she’s a little untested in this department (though flies and drives just fine, no motion sickness to report) so I want to be prepared. Apart from having a lot of water and snacks (saltines) and a hearty, familiar breakfast, what should I be bringing along for her? I don’t see her eating ginger – I mean I can try but I doubt she’ll enjoy the taste. Any recs? They do have a full snack bar and beverage bar on board so we’ll have some options available if all else fails.

Dramamine. If you’re seasick, crackers and ginger aren’t going to cut it

I would give her dramamine beforehand unless you want to risk wrecking this trip finding out if she is prone to seasickness. If you wait until she gets sick it will be too late for Dramamine.
Saltines, ginger ale, etc. are not going to help with seasickness; it’s just more volume to barf up. I would also give her a minimal, quickly digested breakfast for this reason.

This is giving me morning sickness flashbacks. The ginger lobby has too much power!

Dramamine or Meclizine. Not to scare you, but my kid flies and drives fine and gets sick OUT OF HER MIND on boats. Like will barf pretty much the moment she steps foot on a boat in even the calmest waters. And whale watching tests even the strongest stomachs. I’ve been on whale watching boats where I was pretty much the only person on board not barfing.

Super helpful. I’ll grab some dramamine. Looks like there’s a kids version that my local Target has in stock. Thank you!!

PSA to make sure you do not accidentally buy the “natural” version of dramamine, which is just ginger, not dramamine with ginger thrown in for good measure. My husband discovered this the hard way on a deep sea fishing trip/barf fest. It looks like it may currently be called advanced herbals.

I would see if your local drugstore carries sea bands that add pressure to her wrists – these make a huge difference for my motion sickness prone kid. And pick up a sickness bag when you step on board to have it ready just in case.
