Had a follow-up appointment for my kiddo (almost 5) that had strabismus surgery in August. All went well, and the doc is happy with progress. She did recommend patching the eye we didn’t operate on ~2 hours/day so that the eye that had surgery can continue to strengthen. She seemed confident that within a few months we’d get to where he needed to be.
I know this is overall good news, especially since he doesn’t need surgery again, but I wish it was just “done”. Any tips on making patching “fun” and less of an annoyance? This kid leans strong-willed/emotional, per the post I made after Thanksgiving :)
Gift recommendations for a first time dad? (Sorry in advance for length!) DH and I have had a rough couple of years. Many unsuccessful rounds of IVF followed by a successful but difficult pregnancy and traumatic delivery, and now we have our precious perfect little one. This will be baby’s first Christmas.
DH has been a supportive partner, and his needs have often taken a backseat because it’s been so overwhelmingly hard for me. Now that I’m coming up for air, I’m taking things off DH’s plate. He’s trepidatious about me taking on too much, but I can tell he’s about ready to crash. I’d love to give him a weekend away type experience gift but it’s hard to convince him to take even a couple hours to himself.
I’ve been thinking of fun things he can immerse himself in at home. I got him a couple of fancy Lego sets, which I know he loves but it’s a challenge to find space for them. Maybe I should get him shelving for the Legos? It would have to be floating shelves (no more floor space for bookshelves), and I’m not sure how heavy the sets are. He’s tried to brew his own beer but didnt like the process or the result; he liked brewing(?) mead though. He’s interested in woodworking but I don’t know where to begin with the tools and such for that.
Also looking for any fun/funny things. Last year’s dad joke calendar was a big hit so a new one is in his stocking. He likes funny/punny t shirts too. Thanks!
What do you think about the Telepathy Tapes? A friend who is intelligent and has a background in public health and social work has gotten into the podcast and trying to convince me it’s real. But there is so much evidence debunking it, and tons of criticism of the podcast. Is it fair for me to form an opinion on the podcast (and of my friend) before listening to it?
My baby is about to transition from the infant room to the transitional ones room at daycare and there is an option to have meals and snacks provided by the schools. We would love to do this for convenience and so he can try some different things, but the menu doesn’t look very healthy. I’m no nutrition zealot but even to me, a lot of chicken nuggets and tater tots doesn’t seem the best for this age. What would you do?
Paging moms in their 40s! Does it happen to you to get home from work completely depleted of patience and mental energy? I am a lawyer and I have a fairly flexible job. I work with nice people. I work out twice a week. I try to get enough sleep. My only issue is eating sweets daily-not sure if this is causing fatigue. I commute by car 30 min each day. I sometimes work from home. My husband is involved. Despite this, I have 0 patience with my kid (elementary aged spicy kid) and drag chores when I get home. I’m looking for ideas to make small changes to have more energy to mother after my work day.
Ugh help me out here. My oldest is a first grader at a public school. He recently has shown up in several photos on the school’s public social media page. I checked no when asked if I gave permission to have him on social media. I’m frustrated and uncomfortable with it, but I also don’t want to get sideways with his lovely teacher or the school.
Should I just let this go since his name isn’t associated with the photo? Is this something that is bound to happen as he gets older no matter what I do? Thoughts appreciated.
What do you kids do for recess at school when they can’t go outside? In our district, this happens waaaaaay too often for my taste but that’s a topic for another day. We found out yesterday that kids just watched a movie and/or played video games. The parents are unhappy with that given the already large amount of screen time used for learning for 2nd graders. I’m planning to orgaize a board-game/toy drive to fill a little cart for the classrooms to share, but I’m wondering if there are other things I should be considering.
I think the biggest issue is probably not so much the lack of available analog materials, though that may be a piece, but just that the teachers want a break and screens are the easiest way to manage that. This is a public school, which I’m sure you probably figured out already…
Game/toy suggestions welcome as well!
Did anyone read the recent (disturbing) Guardian articles on the Freebirth Society and its totally unhinged leaders? I’ve followed this movement for some years now and am glad to see a mainstream piece attempt to quantify late-term stillbirths and neonatal deaths among adherents (which are, unsurprisingly, sky-high). I wonder if there’s a case for charging the founders with practicing medicine or midwifery without a license. They certainly dispensed individualized advice in multiple cases.
I know not all the recs here are specifically for life with children but beige satin seems like the worst kid-related fabric ever? would show all kinds of fingerprints and oil and the like, and also it’s ugly….
I was listening to Mom and Dad are Fighting and was fascinated by the hosts’ recounting what was in their bag for a day out. Elizabeth’s was a marvel.
What is in your “mom” bag?
I tend to have a book, maybe a Genius Square or Uno if I’m expecting a wait somewhere. When we’re travelling somewhere nice where we might have time to paint, I bring a stackable watercolour set, sketchbook, and collapsible water cup. But I don’t think I’ve ever carried a first aid kit and so rarely remember a water bottle?
