My children have lost ANOTHER coat I am losing my miiiiiiiiind.
The question below made me think of this, but how are you generous with the school while navigating the constant fundraisers? We’ve been in school two and a half months and I think we’re already at fundraiser number 4. Some of them have specific purposes, like art supplies, or classroom libraries, and there’s usually some gift too, like a tote or picture frame or shirt. I don’t want to sign up for five different accounts to give money and I don’t need any more cheap junk, but we’d like to give.
How does everyone else wade through the requests?
This is so awkward to say so please assume good intentions and bear with me.
We just moved back to our home town, starting a new school and, it’s very clear that we’re one of the wealthiest families at the school. This wasn’t the case for my husband or I growing up (by far). How do I be generous without seeming flaunting?
Ugh, the Halloween stress is real! Kid wants to be a specific winged animal so I ordered a wing/mask set online and it came and it’s just… not great. I am now thinking I’m going to spend the entire weekend going to craft stores and trying to figure out how to make the thing myself. I’m not crafty and there’s a reason i’d rather throw money at costumes – I’m super busy!
I know it’s not even Halloween yet, but can we do a thread on favorite kids’ presents across the ages? I need ideas for a 4 YO girl, 7 YO boy, and 10 YO boy. Here are things that have been hits for my kids:
2 YO girl: still plays daily with the Hape wooden dollhouse, two years later. Bro plays a lot, too
3 and 5 YO: real walkie talkies; noxgear chest lights to wear to play outside after dark
Ages 2-6: play food for use in play kitchen
All ages: magnatiles from age 2 to still going strong! same with duplos, even by the older ones. hair chalk. mini karaoke machine with two microphones. glow-in-the-dark body markers for basement play. flashlights, especially booklights. dress up from Little Adventures and The Hulk mega sized gloves. Binoculars. Refreshed markers, crayons, and add-ons like stamps and massive drawing pads.
Far less use than I thought: marble run; remote controlled cars; fisher price sit-and-spin; balance board; kinetic sand (to be fair, they loved it but the mess is NOT worth it for me, and I usually like mess!)
Our two-year-old has suddenly been refusing the high chair – a full-on meltdown with sad tears and “all done, all done.” He seems more upset than angry. We’ve ended up taking him out of the chair after a few minutes because it’s just NOT stopping on its own and he’s getting hysterical. Any advice on what we should be doing (we’ve already confirmed the chair still fits, isn’t pinching, etc.)? We’d ideally keep him in the chair for longer because if he eats elsewhere, he tries to run around with food in his mouth, and my husband thinks we need to be firm and not “give in” to the crying. Normally I do think consistency/boundaries in expectations are important, but this crying seemed more upset than angry, as I mentioned – more like genuine distress than his usual tantrums. Anyway, any advice?
We’re planning to get a play kitchen for LO for Christmas this year. He’ll be about 18 months. We like a play kitchen we saw in a Walmart catalogue (surprisingly to me! Wooden and beautiful and not nearly as expensive as other options) but open to other suggestions. What I’m more interested in, though, is play food. I’m overwhelmed by the options. I love tender leaf toys but it seems like you have to buy a lot of pieces to get a decent variety. I’d prefer to start smaller. Suggestions?
Here’s what I DON’T want:
– a million pieces that I will drive myself crazy trying to track down.
– Big no to fruit you cut in half, fish that comes apart to show the skeleton, etc. LO will fling half of it somewhere and it will bug me that none of the food is complete
– projectiles, generally.
I want/am cool with:
– preferably one line or brand that we can build on over time.
– things that make (non-electronic) noise, like the Melissa and Doug metal pots and pans that will absolutely become percussion instruments
– wooden things but hopefully somewhat lightweight. We have some tender leaf toys and Haba wooden animals, and he mostly doesn’t throw those.
– I prefer a texture that approximates the actual food, but I have no clue if that’s a thing.
At what age would you say OK, now this is a safety issue, this kid needs to learn how to swim?
Proposing playdates can cause some social anxiety for me. I need to get over the hump and email a couple parents in my daughters class to suggest playdates but I find the specific moms in question pretty intimidating. It’s tempting to just wait and see if they invite my daughter first. Someone give me a pep talk!
I want to order nice personalized christmas stockings for the family. Any company recommendation? I probably lean towards animals or snowmen on them.
