My 8 year old daughter is starting piano lessons with a teacher who seems a little… intense. Not mean or yell-y but she seems to have very high expectations. She told me I have to supervise my daughter’s daily practice and correct mistakes. Historically my daughter does not handle it well when I try to teach her things, although I know nothing about music so this might be different. I’m also not sure how I’m supposed to correct mistakes when I don’t know how to play the piano at all? The teacher says I will learn alongside my daughter but I’m kind of skeptical. Already it seems like my daughter knows more than me. She and the piano teacher were talking about the different keys during the evaluation/audition and I had no idea what they were talking about. Is this going to be an unmitigated disaster?
Low stakes/fun question. I have a colleague that has a dotted line relationship to me (I manage them). They are FANTASTIC at their work, and have just moved into a new apartment after a period where they were living with family and helping them through a hard time. I’d like to get a housewarming present. I’m usually a Gift Card giver, but in this case would like to give something physical. Any thoughts? They are GenZ, progressive, really into plants and home decor.
I know there are a lot of NYCers on this site – curious what, if any, groups, clubs, etc., you’ve found useful for building your social network (which can include a professional network but not looking for like industry groups – wondering if there are charitable orgs, arts groups, etc. that I should look into). Thanks
Ladies. It has been dark around here. Let’s lighten up and celebrate our wins.
I was out for dinner this week (my bday) and my 8 year old was a delight. He ordered confidently off the menu and made conversation including pointing out that “ALL Olympians are amazing Mom”, and coined the phrase “unsettling silence” [awkward silence], that cracked DH and I up.
Anyone have a good parenting book to recommend? I lean crunchy and prefer research-based over memoir, but willing to read most things if they are thought-provoking.
Ugh, sorry to start the comment section with something upsetting but I’ve been so personally upset about the avalanche in Tahoe. Most of the victims were moms on a moms’ ski trip based out of my usual ski hill in an area I’ve gone backcountry skiing in before. The names aren’t released yet and I don’t believe I know any victims, but the topic of how to manage risk in the outdoors as a mom is near and dear to my heart, plus it’s a place I know so well. It just hits hard. I feel so terrible for their families, especially knowing that they won’t even be allowed to grieve without the moms getting criticized. We don’t know the whole story yet but it seems as though the guide company made a big mistake leading them out there in the conditions, or perhaps they weren’t able to follow their safer plan coming back. It won’t matter – they died and it’s unforgivable to people when mothers die on a trip with risk away from their kids.
