What are we eating for lunch these days? Looking for low prep, easy options. Taylor Farms bagged salads have been my go to, so… yeah. Ha.

I have come to think of certain main page commenters as real life Eugenia Lincolns.

Has anyone’s older toddler or preschooler had a “both parents” phase? My son is suddenly asking “both parents” go outside, pick him up, everything.

How’d you all handle it, especially re: complying vs. saying “this is what’s happening”?

I’m curious if anyone has dealt with this – I’m 40 but my family still holds against me my temper tantrums etc. as a toddler. My mother and brother tell stories about my “bad” behavior as a three or four year old every time I see them. They also fudge the stories to make it seem like these things happened much more recently, but when asked, they admit that I was a toddler. Basically, they ascribe to my character things that I did when I was 4, notwithstanding the nearly 40 intervening years.

Example: when DH and I moved in together, my mother commented that she’s surprised he gets any closet space because I don’t like to share. I asked why she thinks I don’t like to share? When you were 3 you screamed at someone who took a toy you weren’t even playing with. Anything recent? No not that she could think of.

Or, I bought fine china for myself. My mother saw it and commented she’s surprised I wanted something breakable because I’m careless with my things and I always break everything. I asked her what do I break? She said crayons when I was 4. Couldn’t give a recent example.

I have a child now and, while I want him to have a good relationship with his extended family, DH and I don’t want him to hear people talking about his mother this way. I used to think all families were like this but DH has told me that no, my family is just mean to me. I’ve tried to talk to them but they hand wave it away. They don’t think they’re doing anything wrong; if they think I’m selfish and careless then it’s because I’m selfish careless and I should work on myself. Is distancing ourselves from them really the only solution?

Heel recommendation: Naturalizer 27 Edit Elaine. I wore them to a wedding and they felt great all night!

School starts next week, and I’ve noticed my anxiety ramping way up. Ugh. It’s been a good summer, and I am going to miss the downtime so much. Our evenings have been so free, and it’s been wonderful. My kids will benefit from being back in a routine again, but I’m bracing myself for the mental load to increase.

Also, I am not looking forward to all the emotional downloading that comes with the territory when parenting teens and tweens. I know that sounds really bad, but I don’t know how to articulate it! When something’s wrong, they tend to come to me for the emotional coaching. I’m GLAD they feel comfortable doing that, but it’s a lot. Also, my girl starts middle school this year, and I’m having to remind myself that her experience is not necessarily going to be like mine, or her older sibling’s. But man, middle school is tough on everyone.

Any recommendations for a National Geographic like animal show that is appropriate for preschoolers? My daughter loves animals and really enjoyed part of a national geographic show when we were in a waiting room. But my memory from watching them years ago is that most of hunting and other scenes that might be scary for a little kid.

My son (age 13) is getting braces today. He’s pretty down on it, particularly about how much he expects it to be uncomfortable. Any suggestions to help him feel better? Little treat I could bring home that might be helpful? (Husband is bringing him, I won’t see him until tonight.)

My husband is a real jerk in the mornings sometimes. I’m a light sleeper and was up 7 times last night- 3 times for one toddler who doesn’t sleep well lately, one time for our preschooler with an itchy bug bite, once for the storm we had, once to use the bathroom, and once because the dog was pacing. The poorly sleeping toddler was up at 5:30- he woke me up but my husband kept snoozing. (The kids always come to me, not him).

This morning I was telling my husband I was tired and he snapped “that’s a you problem. Figure it out” (meaning my light sleeping). Ok cool thanks. He then ignored the kids for an hour, glued to his phone. Our four year old asked him to read a book with her and he said no.

Like sure you can have a grumpy morning, but you don’t get to be a jerk to me and the kids.

Any advice on what to do for my 21-month-old shouting no at other kids on the playground? He’ll do it if they’re using something he wants to use (they’re there first) or if one approaches to use the same slide, etc. It’s not every single time but often enough where we want to come up with a response in the moment while he hopefully grows out of it.
