Anyone have tips for surviving in a job where your boss and you just don’t really mesh? Far from an abusive or toxic situation, we just don’t really like each other and it’s unpleasant to interact with them. But other aspects of the job are ok, and it pays well, so I’d like to ride it out at least a bit. Do I just “accept” my boss sucks?
For the mom who was posting about guitar yesterday, echoing one poster’s recommendation for a school of rock camp. DS did it for a week and got to try out guitar, bass, drums and keyboard (though honestly the keyboard is dominated by piano kids so don’t think that was going to be a winner). Came out loooving drums and six months in its been a great new hobby. Recommend checking it out as a pretty painless way to get exposure to a number of instruments!
Any suggestions for spending down an over-funded health flexible spending account? Owing to some inaccurate assumptions about our expenses this year, we have around $1500 to spend. Normally this time of year I stock up on toiletries (sunscreen, OTC medicines, etc.) but that strategy is not going to get me to $1500!
i’m the OP of the post yesterday about getting kid performance moved to 7:40am, and caught up on the follow ups and wanted to clarify that 99% of our students are dropped off at school by a parent/caregiver. we don’t have buses, which is why first thing in the morning is better for most people at our school. otherwise i’d never have suggested it.

So youth sports, huh? Very interesting thread yesterday, thanks for writing, OP! So, I’m of two minds here – on the one hand, yes in an ideal world, everyone would be placed on the exact right team for their skill level…. but on the other, more realistic, hand, most youth sports leagues are made up of parent volunteers who dedicate a lot of (unpaid) time and effort to give the kids a good experience. I think most parents have good intentions, but it’s also true that you’ll see that the kids who make the better teams usually have some parent involvement. And if you never volunteer to coach or participate in this, then chances are lower that your kid will make the top teams (I’ve seen this time and time again in our very competitive town soccer league). I guess I’m fine with this, given that it’s hard to be a coach and we often don’t get enough volunteers as it is.
Similar though maybe less meaningful (it’s only elementary) impact through PTO work – like yes, my kid will get on more teachers’ radars because I know these teachers well. Not necessarily preferential treatment, but maybe some more accommodations than if I was a random parent. Or my kid will get more pictures in the yearbook because I’m the one volunteering my time to put it together…
Do you all agree? Think I’m crazy?
I feel like the DTC brands (e.g. Quince, Everlane) can be hit-or-miss but Cuyana is a great one based on the purchases I’ve made. This bag is gorgeous (although at this price point I would hope for a better closure…)
