A colorful package of multicolored Magic Puffy Pens

I’ll have to buy two sets of these Magic Puffy Pens for my kids so they don’t fight over them.

Like magic, the paint from these pens puffs up with 60 seconds of heat from a hairdryer. This set of six neon-colored pens is great for creating unique 3D art on a snowy day.

Ooly’s Magic Puffy Pens are on sale for $13.95 (originally $16.95).

Anyone been to Zurich with kids and have a hotel or apartment rental to recommend? We only have one kid, so in general we don’t have a problem with Europe’s smaller hotel rooms, but in Zurich it seems like every hotel room can only accommodate two people and the hotel rooms that let you book for three people are outrageously expensive (like $1,000 a night for very basic three star hotels).

Screaming into the void. I am doing another parent a huge favor on Sunday. She is making it….so much harder on me than it needs to be. I’m trying to give grace bc I feel like the world just needs more good energy right now. And I’m not going to go into details bc it feels catty, but broadly, she is texting me several times asking things I’ve already answered/provided information about! And there is another parent involved on the text threads who has already done the things she’s asking me about, so I know it’s not a miscommunication!!! This week has been hugely taxing on my family, which is definitely giving me less patience than I normally would have and that’s not her fault or anything she knows about….but jeeeeez, I cannot devote any more mental space to details on this one random event that is supposed to happen three days from now!!!!

Any tips on instituting a limited screen rule for yourself and spouse? DH and I have talked about wanting to be less online, less at the mercy of the algorithm, etc. etc., general chatter of the zeitgeist, and have tried things individually but have not really had a method for keeping each other accountable. Recently our kids have started making comments like, “daddy only half-listens because he’s looking at his phone.” We’re both really game to make some changes– especially in this narrowing window before our kids have phones (eldest is 5th grade) but are failing miserably at everything we try. What have you tried and what worked? Here’s my list:

– no phones at the dinner table. DH routinely breaks this one because his phone is in his pocket and he will absent-mindedly look at it when it vibrates. When this happens, we call him out and he gets up and puts it on the charging station.
– phones on the charging station all evening until kids go to bed (we failed miserably at this one)
– phones kept in the kitchen charging station over night so they’re not the last thing we look at before bed and the first thing we look at in the morning (again, failed hard)
– i set in-app timers, but routinely override them
– DH has tried putting using his phone in black and white which is supposed to make it less attractive, but went back after a short while

I suspect many of us are in this experimental phase. Any suggestions?

Has anyone ordered particularly good Valentine’s this year? I have a 3rd grade girl in need of a fun option.

Anyone doing anything fun this weekend?

T is flying off tomorrow afternoon with my dad, so we’re 9 days childless. Going to go to brunch and yoga Sunday.

I also have a marker-related question…does anyone have glitter pens/markers they recommend? Kids are DIYing their Valentines this year and requested glitter pens but the quality seems wildly variable.

And a bonus “something that has been working well for us” lately…on the days when the kids watch some TV while we prep dinner, giving them vegetables to eat while they do it. It is INSANE how many peppers/carrots/cucumbers/broccoli they mindlessly chomp away at while watching twenty minutes of Peppa Pig. I used to do this a ton when they were toddlers then fell out of the habit — I’m here to say it still works with elementary schoolers (or at least with mine).
