Anyone happen to have recommendations for picture books about adoption from foster care or open adoptions?
We have a toddler who’s been living with us since birth. His bio parents live nearby and he currently sees them a couple times a week, but there’s a good chance we’ll end up with permanent custody but they will still have the right to regular visits. He loves books and I’ve been looking for something to read about families that look like ours (aka two sets of parents where you live full-time with one set but still see the other set). I know there are lots of pictures books out there about being adopted or being in foster care, but haven’t come across any about this sort of arrangement.
We have a few childcare gaps this summer, and today is one. Daycare is closed today to reset for the new year. My super active, “SOMEBODY PLAY WITH MEEEE” 5.5 year old is home today while DH and I WFH. I have a bunch of stuff to turnaround before leaving on PTO tomorrow. Also there’s some work being done to the outside of our house, so outside is limited (plus it’s like 100 degrees) and we have to be somewhere early evening. I put together a “camp schedule” for kiddo, because he won’t just sit and watch TV for 8 hours, nor can he be left alone to his own devices to “go play” (sorry not sorry to all the influencers who say “have a 90s summer” and “let the kids be bored”).

I posted the other day about being interested in junior life guarding programs for my son. It turns out the swim test at age 6 involves swimming 50 yards freestyle in under 3 mins, treading water for 3 mins, and swimming underwater for 10 yards. Um…how common is being able to do that at age 6?! I grew up in a swimming household (stepmom a professional instructor and lifeguard, many members of her large family professional lifeguards, I did swim team around age 8, family trips to natural water sources and the beach, we lived on the coast, etc.) and yet that seems aggressive. Those of you with kids that age who can swim, does that standard seem feasible? It varies slightly at the different programs near us but they’re all in that general vein.
