I’m doing boring tasks today, so perhaps we could share some weekend fun?
It’s terribly rainy so I’m making chicken and stars soup for dinner.
Tomorrow, I’m volunteering with the local sustainability org, reprising my role as smoothie bike girl (a bike on a trainer, which powers the blender attached to it), and kiddo and husband have swim and music class, and will kindly run a freecycle errand for me.
And then Sunday, we’re going to a friend’s house in the afternoon for a hang/playdate.
Somewhere in there, we need a calendar summit b/c we keep getting annoyed with each other for conflicts, and I need to do my Scouts volunteer training online before the head of scouts comes to my house and stands over me til I do it.
Clementine says
I love the specific volunteer job of being the smoothie bike girl!
Kids have off today so even though I’m working it’s very much 3 day weekend vibes. Tonight some combo of kids/spouse/I will run over to Grandma’s (Gma broke her hand hiking with a dog and it’s her dominant hand) and cleaning/weekend errands. Tomorrow we have spring sports’ uniform day, then brunch with friends, then a memorial (for me) followed by date night with husband. Sunday we are doing stuff that I don’t particularly remember but I know there are things.
Cb says
I’m sure I’ll do other things but there is something fun about the smoothie bike. I joked that if I’m there all day, I’m starting my strava.

We are doing a very quintessential Quebec thing and going to a sugar shack with friends. The snow has melted in the city, I’m not sure if they still have enough in the mountains to pour warm maple syrup on it – that’s my favourite part. But we also picked a kid-friendly one with a petting zoo, horse drawn carriages, and a little train ride. It’s my toddler’s first time so hopefully she’ll have fun!
Anon says
Um this sounds amazing!
Anonymous says
I want to go to there.

We fly home from spring break late Saturday and will spend Sunday unpacking and running errands like grocery shopping. Sending kiddo to a neighbor’s for a play date in the afternoon so we can have some focused time to get ready for the week.
GCA says
Don’t worry Cb, it took me all school year last year to complete the less-immediate parts of my online Scout leader training!…
Today: Starting veggie and herb seeds indoors; making pizza for dinner. (I made mini blueberry pies yesterday for Pi Day but like an idiot forgot to make or buy the pizza dough.)
Saturday: We are hosting Kid 1’s playdate with two friends; I have a brownie recipe in my back pocket for this, but three third-graders can generally entertain themselves. Kid 2 has a birthday party to attend. Somewhere in there I need to do a bunch of digital errands and maybe go for a walk while it’s still above 40 degrees.
Sunday: Long run with a friend, kids might wander to a neighbor’s to see if she’s free to play, neighborhood hangout.

We are in the thick of things with our daughter’s final semester of high school. We were out late last night watching the girls’ concert/jazz choir compete. I sat with some other musician parents and we entertained ourselves by analyzing the various choir directors’ artistic and pedagogical decisions. Tonight her dad and I are going out to dinner with some choir parents before we all watch the show choir compete. It will be a late night, then the kid and I are up early for our voice lessons tomorrow morning. I am going to bring a new piece I’m really excited about that I hope the teacher will let me work on, then do my meal planning and grocery order during my daughter’s lesson. Sunday afternoon is her IB art exhibition, then we will go out for sushi to celebrate the submission of all her IB papers. At some point during the weekend I will have to teach her to write a cover letter for summer job applications and squeeze in a couple of long walks with the dog.
Vicky Austin says
Wow, IB is no joke! Congratulations to you and to her.

Thank you!

We are also getting rain all weekend! DH is on a work trip through late next week so I’m solo with our kids (with help).
After dropping DS #1 to Y camp, I took the 8 AM yoga class, and what a delight. Going to see if I can sneak this in on most Fridays (I WFH).
Tonight is pizza night with our neighbor friends, Sat will be time at the Y (I work out, kids play) and then lunch with a friend while my Mom watches the kids. Maybe some rain walks with kids in the PM. My sibling is coming over Saturday evening for some much-needed 1/1 time.
Sunday I’m not sure yet, probably breakfast out and then TBD! I have a relative visiting from abroad so hope to catch them at some point. DS #1 has been on spring break this week, so definitely back to the early/normal bedtime.

Feels like a big weekend and yet also sort of normal. Today is my last baby’s first birthday. I started work again yesterday and my husband is home on annual leave with the kids for March Break while the new Au Pair gets acclimatized. We are trying to pick away at home renovations but tomorrow we have a birthday party for a friend’s miracle baby so that will be a great time as it’s a very celebratory occasion and her guests are always fascinating and fun. We leave there to pick my 13 year old up at the airport. She is on her way home with her eight grade class from an amazing trip to Europe. I am just dying to see her. Promised my 7 year I would take her to get her nails done on Sunday and plan on taking the kids for a pub lunch to hear some live music on Paddy’s Day. I come from a Gaelic speaking place and my kids love the Celtic music scene there (my son is learning the traditional tunes on the bagpipes). Looking forward to it!

Feels like both kind of a big weekend and yet a normal weekend. Today is my last baby’s first birthday and my second day back at work. My husband is home with kids using up the last his annual leave while they are on March Break. We have a wonderful celebration tomorrow for a miracle baby and my friend’s guests are always super interesting folks. We leave there to head to the airport to pick up my 13 year old who is coming home from an incredible whirlwind trip to Europe with her class. I am absolutely dying to see her. Sunday I promised to take my seven year old to get her nails painted and we plan on taking the kids for a pub lunch to listen to some live Paddy’s Day music. I come from a Gaelic speaking area and my kids love the Celtic music scene. My son is learning the traditional tunes on the bagpipes.
Cb says
Oh that’s amazing Seafinch. I am slightly terrified my son will pick up the bagpipes. Think the neighbours might riot.

What’s the best way to gift wrap a stack (7 or 8) of board books?
Cb says
I’d do a old school book tie (think how Anne of Green Gables would carry books from the library). Or put them in a little crate that can be reused (I’m fairly minimalist but I love a box)
TheElms says
I enjoy wrapping so I tend to do them individually in coordinating paper and then tie in the stack (so the ribbon goes on all 4 sides) with curly ribbon and put a bow on top with the curly ribbon trailing down the sides.
Clementine says
Lol – my kid once suggested we wrap a stack of books ‘like pancakes’. So we wrapped them in brown paper and made construction paper ‘butter’ and ‘syrup’ out of tulle (which was the ribbon). It kind of did resemble a stack of pancakes!
I personally would use a beautiful wide ribbon and tie it in a big bow, but so you can see all the books.

+1. I would definitely do a gift bag.

Favorite easy but nutrient-dense meals for early pregnancy? I’m trying to get in as much nutrition as I can before the nausea makes me not want to eat at all. No food restrictions (besides the basic pregnancy no-nos like raw cheese) but definitely prefer straightforward meals that can be made quickly on weeknights. My go-to meals are already boring.
Anonymous says
I found cold leftovers more appealing and remember eating a lot of noodles with peanut sauce, chicken and vegetables and spaghetti with Bolognese-ish sauce, but cold. Also Doritos.
GCA says
I could barely stomach hot food, so I did a lot of cheese, crackers, nuts, fruit and veggies. Also, for some reason, chicken tenders. Boring is fine! In early pregnancy your body is basically trying to protect you.
Anon says
Scrambled eggs (with any mix-ins you want). I normally don’t like eggs but for some reason craved them in early pregnancy. They are so good you, and are a great source of natural choline. I did develop an aversion once the nausea hit, but I had a good couple weeks of lots of eggs
Anonymous says
I had hyperemesis and eggs were one of the few things I could usually eat. I ate a lot of poached eggs with cheese on English muffins.
busybee says
Sheet pan dinners. Chopped vegetables plus some kind of protein- I like chicken sausage but anything else would work too. Save time and effort by buying pre-chopped veggies. Or just roast vegetables and serve over quinoa for the protein.
Baked fish is easy and quick. Steam some vegetables, boil some rice (or microwave a potato to be even easier).
Anon says
OP here and definitely a fan of prechopped veggies when they’re getting cooked – such a timesaver. I was advised to avoid eating them raw because of the listeria risk, which I understand but it’s still a bummer because I am a big fan of pre-shredded carrots and cabbage for easy salads. I think the sheet pan approach will be the way to go!
Anon says
Oh gosh, glad I didn’t know this til now (24 weeks). I basically lived off garden salads/pasta salad first trimester. The crunchy veggies and salty dressing hit the spot
Anon says
Yeah, honestly it’s been one of the bigger disappointments – those kinds of meals are my jam too. But I just CANNOT psych up to chop that many things from scratch.
SC says
I didn’t like the look or texture of meat when I was pregnant, though I was fine if it was kind of hidden, either in small pieces or behind a wrap (I know, it’s not logical at all). So, I ate a lot of meals based on beans plus grain, sometimes with vegetables and/or a little meat – red beans and rice, burritos, mujadara, pasta with chickpeas, etc. I was also obsessed with the dosas from my local Indian restaurant.
Anonymous says
I also couldn’t eat any kind of meat while pregnant. I joke that my child is at least 50% cheese.
Vicky Austin says
My kid is 90% hard-boiled eggs with EBTB, kiwi, and string cheese from the office fridge.
Anonymous says
OMG it never occurred to me to put that season on a hard-boiled egg. Must try this.
Spirograph says
Me neither! My go-tos on eggs are pesto and dijon (separately, not together!) but everything-bagel egg sounds delicious.
My daughter is 50% Chick-fil-a #1 meal. Oddly, the only preparation of chicken I could eat while I was pregnant with her; I distinctly remember needing to run from the table when my mom served some innocuous chicken dish. I also had a huge aversion to cooked/wilted greens, even the smell of them made me feel nauseated.
anon says
I had hyperemesis and my son is 85% grapefruits, 15% cream cheese on plain bread. I still remember waking up at 2am absolutely needing to eat a grapefruit.
Clementine says
I ended up eating a lot of the pastas made with protein or fiber or anything. I had really REALLY strong food aversions up until about week 18- anything ‘sweet’ was absolutely out. This included almost all bread, any type of fruit, most crackers, plain yogurt… the list was wild.
TheElms says
Does anyone have a recommendation for a unicorn bag for family travel by airplane? The key requirements are a place to put my work computer and charger, my keys, wallet and glasses and hand cream/chapstick, my kids tablet and charger and headphones, diapers/wipes/change of clothes, 2 water bottles (me and kiddo), all the snacks, and toys/stuffy to entertain kiddo on flight (tablet is still a last resort for our 2 year old).
I’m guessing this has to be a backpack but also open to a tote if it has a long enough and comfortable shoulder strap or crossbody option. I don’t always have a roller suitcase with me because I typically also have the stroller with carseat and 2 year old.
GCA says
I use a large Patagonia daypack that I got as work swag years ago. I did a weekend trip with my 4yo last summer and all we needed was that backpack + a tote bag! It’s not the most glamorous on my petite frame and I look like a kid on her way to school, but it works.
Cb says
I have a Passenger brand backpack which would fit that criteria. It is 26L, and opens really wide at the top, which I think is key.
Anon says
I read this as a bag that has unicorns on it because I have a 7 yo who wants unicorns on everything
TheElms says
My 2 year old would love me to carry a unicorn bag but alas I’m hoping for something a little more grown up! It would be really great if the bag had a luggage sleeve as well.
Anonymous says
I have the New Day work backpack from Target that has a luggage sleeve and fits a lot, with a decent amount of pockets. I really liked having a diaper clutch when my kid was older and that would probably fit in there.
Anon says
That’s an awful lot of stuff. I have the Ruvalino diaper bag backpack that everyone has which is nice and large with lots of compartments. It’ll fit all of that minus the laptop and headphones.
TheElms says
It is a lot of stuff, but is there some magic option I’m not thinking of or something that I don’t need from the list to take a 2 year old on a flight that could be anywhere from 2-8 hours? I’m not allowed to pack my work laptop in checked luggage and even if I were it just seems like too much of a risk to me.
Anonymous says
I would try the largest Lo & Sons Rowledge backpack. Also, doesn’t your 2-year-old get a personal item too? If so, I would do a laptop backpack for electronics plus a diaper bag with a shoulder strap for other kid stuff. That is the easiest 2-bag combo to carry.
Anon says
Nope, just that when I’m traveling with my same age kid I either need to leave my laptop at home or bring the Ruvalino + a laptop bag.
Anon says
Can the 2yo carry a small backpack? We used to have ours carry a toddler-sized backpack with their water bottle and some books/toys/stuffies. Sometimes we’d end up just attaching theirs to ours if they weren’t in a carrying mood, but it kept our bags from being as stuffed full so it was easier to find things.
TheElms says
We have been practicing but the success rate is low so far. She is only just 2 and my older one didn’t get the hang of carrying her own bag until she was around 3 or 3 1/2 so I think for this next trip we will skip it.
Anon says
My experience is that the backpack a 2 year old can carry is so small that it doesn’t add any value. Once they get to be 4 or so they can carry a full size backpack with their own snacks and entertainment and then it’s useful.
Anon says
I just bought this bag for family travel, and it looks like it would work for you.

I love my backpack like this – holds a ton of stuff.
TheElms says
We have a very old one of the bigger version of this, which is truly enormous so maybe the smaller version would be good too!
Anon says
A backpack will be the easiest. When kiddo was little and we had a stroller and car seat, I normally checked a bag and just had the backpack, car seat and stroller to get through the airport (stroller and sometimes car seat gate checked).
Sandra says
i have the north face women’s never stop utility backpack and it is fantastic for this. I fly solo with 3 year old and it fits all the things you listed (though when computer is in it does get tighter and heavier.
Anonymous says
You need two bags, and since the kid is 2 they’ll have their own personal item. I would do a backpack plus a zippered tote.
Anonymous says
I bought this one for traveling with my kids. It’s been really great!

Very late reply but in case you see this, the LL bean comfort carry laptop backpack old be perfect for this, though probably won’t fit under the seat in front of you when stuffed full. It has a laptop sleeve, 2 water bottle pockets, several small compartments for organizing and 2 medium/large sections for all the big stuff. I have two kids and can cram so much in there. I used to carry a portable potty in it plus all sorts of food, clothes and supplies! It’s not pretty but super functional.

I wish they made this top in adult sizes, because I would totally wear it. I’m tired of all my neutrals and want some fun colorful pieces.
Lydia says
strong agree!! I actually like the silhouettes of a lot of current fashion, but the total lack of color beyond neutrals is so boring and sad.
Anonymous says
Huh? There are like four different colors that are super on-trend for spring. Powder blue, red, maroon, and butter-yellow.
Anon says
This is something you could 100% get made for you on etsy.
SF says
I might re-ask this on Monday but we’re headed to Mexico for Spring Break. My youngest is 3.5 and about 35 pounds. Is there any alternative to a light travel carseat that can be safe for him to use on the hour long taxi ride from the airport to the hotel? we may do a few other taxis but will mostly be walking or in golf carts.
Anon says
You can check out the Ride safer vest. It looks like a bit of learning curve to get it on properly, but would be easier to carry. Unfortunately any sort of booster will have a minimum of 40lbs (and 4/5 years) to use
Anon says
Is it a taxi or more like a bus? This may be unpopular but we don’t lug a car seat along just for airport-hotel shuttles.
Redux says
Mifold travel car seats (check them out on the manufacturer’s website but eBay is your friend as most are sold out). We use the folding travel boosters and they are fantastic.
Anon says
People do like these, but I believe they also have a manufacturer limit of 4yrs and 40lbs
