A pink t-shirt with colorful cat appliques

Boden always has the cutest kids’ clothes, and this T-shirt is perfect for the first day of school.

I especially like their appliqué shirts — they’re a step above typical screen-printed ones. This 100% cotton shirt has cute kitties playing with various back-to-school supplies. For more back-to-school vibes, there’s also one with an apple.

This shirt is $32 full price and comes in sizes 2-3y to 11-12y (though it looks like some sizes are already sold out!). There are also some summer versions on clearance. Right now you can get 20% off everything at Boden, which brings this down to $26.50.

Youth sports question– how common are scheduling issues? We started our son in tee ball this fall (per his request). He is having a great time. However, we’ve gotten really frustrated with the administration of the league we are in. The league doesn’t release the schedule for the season in advance. So far, we get the schedule for games for each week about 10 days before the game. We know games are on Saturday mornings, but we don’t know what time or if we have a bye until the schedule comes out. Apparently, they do this so that in the older age groups, they can set more competitive matches at the end of the season, but I don’t get why this is a thing in younger age groups.

There is another league in our area that handles baseball, and we’re probably switching to that next season. However, this league is the only league in our area that handles indoor soccer in the winter (among a few other sports).

Another “no right answer here” question, just looking for your thoughts: many (not all) parents in DD’s girl scout troop are planning to buy them tin can phones as Christmas/Hanukkah gifts. Apparently it is a VOIP phone that can only call contacts you approve in the app in addition to 911. DD came home asking for one because one of the girls mentioned it to her. I’m… reluctant. Any time my kids have needed to call someone they just use my phone and they have iPads that can call approved contacts and 911. This feels (a) like an unnecessary device, and (b) like it would encourage more calling than she already does just because it feels cool, potentially supplanting free play, reading, or other pursuits that I would prefer her to participate in. WWYD? Thoughts on the device in general?

DD’s birthday is today so I made a dinner reservation for our nuclear family and my parents who are visiting from out of state. MIL just sent a message asking what time to meet us for dinner. Uh. So either DD mentioned dinner at this restaurant and MIL took it as an invitation or DD invited them when they were babysitting recently. In-laws are coming to her friend party this weekend and I’ll have the long weekend with my parents, but I was looking forward to a smaller dinner since it’s the end of a long week. What do I do? Modify the reservation? Tell in-laws kindly that’s not the plan?

I am thinking about getting a Brick. I work in the office 3-4 days a week but I don’t find myself very distracted by my phone at my office – it’s mostly at home. I’m wondering if you’ve used it, do you recommend getting two to start out with (home and office) or just one? I will likely be the only one using it at home – I have little kids and I am the only iOS user in my household. I don’t actually know what I’m hoping to cut out – mostly to end the addicted feeling that I have to have it on me. When I’m around my kids I mostly use my phone to text with my family about my kids, which is silly, or plan the day/read emails. I’d probably still be able to do those things with the Brick, but it would remove the temptation to just click on over to a mindless scroll app.

There is no right answer here, but how would you decide:

My elderly grandfather passed away. Mother was absolutely devoted to him and helped care for him as he declined. He was a wonderful grandparent, though in adulthood I drifted away as I have lived several states for many years and in the years since Ive had children, I’ve seen him less– my life has been more complicated, it’s super expensive to fly 4 people to visit, etc. etc. Anyhow, his services will be next week, which also happens to be the first day of school for my kids. I am going no matter what, but I dont know if I should I bring my kids? Any other time of year, I would. Its common and expected that children attend funerals in my family, especially for a patriarch. But, my eldest is starting a new school and is pretty nervous. So much so that I think pulling her from school in the first week to go to the funeral (requires two plane flights and at least a couple nights away) might be devastating for her in the short term, but I also want to live the family value of showing up for each other in difficult times, supporting my mom, and generally being exposed to family rituals– we’re so far from our extended family, so we don’t go to a lot of family events. What would you do?

On a whim, I realized that “Fall Ball” is only a 5 week commitment where we live – with no tryouts. So I signed my son up (age 8) and suddenly the season is here starting on Wednesday. He has never played ball more than hitting a ball with a plastic bat in grandma’s back yard. He loves playing catch with his dad and has a mitt.

Aside from realizing that we need to acquire full equipment this weekend. What would you do to prepare him?

Most of the kids will likely have played for a couple of years. DS doesn’t like not being able to do things… [which is obviously why it is good to try something in a lower pressure way… ]

Batting cage this weekend? Or is that going to be terrible if i can’t really “coach him? Tips on equipment?

Neither hubby or I every played baseball (I played T-ball and spent a lot of time looking for 4 leaf clovers.

i let kiddo stay home sick today, but not sure if i made the right call. she had a runny nose last night and was up in the middle of the night saying her stomach hurt, feels warm, but didn’t actually have a fever when i took it. DH and I both had Covid last week, so she could be sick, but usually my rule is fever or vomiting to stay home. our school also has a really draconian attendance policy (like you cant miss more than 10 days, which goes fast with illness and we pull our kids for jewish holidays, so i feel like we wasted a day so early in the year), and I don’t work Fridays and had a million things i was planning to do today, since last Friday I was home sick in bed. I know it is not the end of the world, but I’m hoping I didn’t set a bad precedent.

Well, it’s happened. The regime has succeeded in preventing me from getting the updated COVID vaccine. Pharmacies in my state are refusing to administer it, even to people who “qualify” under the more restrictive authorization, and doctors’ offices don’t stock it. I am going to have to drive at least 2 hours to another state to get it.

Just wanted to say a thank you to all those who told me accidents in first are normal or at least not beyond the norm. I feel way better. Clearly no one is talking about it in real life so I really appreciated the perspective! We definitely didn’t shame her and kind of just decided to treat it as a non-issue and I’m sure it’ll be fine. Appreciate you all.

I’m not saying I’ve never spent $30 on a T-shirt for my kids, but my ranking of spending money on kids’ clothes now is shoes, particularly snow boots, that they have 1 or 2 pairs of and wear everyday, and a nice winter jacket >>>>> every other item that they’re going to get holes in or dirty anyway. Or grow out of.

Just a vent that my second grader’s teacher has much higher academic expectations than her first grade teacher, and it’s been/continues to be a really hard adjustment. I know in the long run this is good for her, both in the sense of learning more substantive material and developing a stronger work ethic, but she’s always had issues with frustration tolerance and persevering when things don’t come easily, and it’s been a ROUGH first month of school. Way rougher than the start of K or 1st grade was.

What am I doing wrong? My kids’ socks are never white after the first wear. They always have a grey/beige layer on the bottom. Is this just inevitable with small kids?i feel like their friends have white-ish socks and people on the street seem to as well. They can’t all just be discarding socks or religiously wearing slippers.

Missing a day of school for The Lightning Thief musical – totally worth it! The cousins all had a blast.
