Anyone else working today? I am here all week (besides tomorrow)! What’s everyone doing for the 4th? Our kids (4.5 and 7) are still a little young for the 9pm fireworks show, but there are some local events happening tonight and a parade tomorrow that we may check out, although we’ve been getting lots of on and off thunderstorms.

I am, but I’m in Europe! But I’m working from Lisbon, so taking a very lackadaisical approach to the subject of work… I’m reading and writing bits, but nothing too taxing. Hopefully I’ll be a bit more productive tomorrow (also waiting to find out about a job, so going to wear out the refresh button)

I’m here but doing the bare minimum (and thankfully camp/preschool is still on as usual).
For the 4th – We’re doing pool/grill with neighbors. I’m going to sneak out to the grocery store in an hour to get the goods for tomorrow’s cooking (tandoori chicken for the grill, 7-layer tex-mex dip, and a funfetti US flag cake – all as USA as you can get!), and get lunch with a new friend today.
We can’t set off fireworks where we live (thankfully – because you can in my parents’ area of our city and it goes on ALL NIGHT LONG), but I’m hoping to run across a fireworks stand when I go out for lunch in her neck of the woods to get some sparklers for the kids – don’t tell on me! ;)
Cb – Good luck on the job!

I’m working, but super pumped for 3-hour early dismissal today. I haven’t decided what we’ll do for the 4th this year, since if it’s not raining it will be humid and 90 so probably miserable to be outside. We might just ride bikes down to the ice cream parlor and back, and otherwise play a video game (my husband and 4 year old are playing through Luigi’s Mansion) and cook oven BBQ ribs.

I’m working today and the kids are at home with DH. We’re hanging out with friends tonight. Tomorrow, there’s a kiddie parade in the neighborhood that my daughter may want to do, and pool time is a must on the 4th for us. Tomorrow night will probably be pretty chill, and there are thunderstorms in the forecast, so that may tamp down some of the usual craziness. When the kids were little, we tried to do all the things, and it was exhausting and deeply un-fun.

+1 – I’ve realized that long holiday weekends are best spent close to home. It may be more of a factor with kids, but something about the slower pace is delicious. In our city, many people leave for the holiday, so a lot of things (e.g. the pool, restaurants, etc.) are a lot emptier.
I still love to travel, but save that for shoulder times.

I’m working. Oldest is at camp grandma for the first time ever. Twins are at day care today. Not sure what we’re doing for the 4th. They’re two, so we may go watch the parade but I doubt they’ll stay up for any fireworks.

Yup, I’m working – but hopefully not a full day. We’re going to a parade tomorrow morning and after that I’m not sure. Maybe the pool (but it will be crowded – so maybe just sprinklers in the backyard).

I’m in Iceland, ha. I’m a 4th of July grinch, plus camps are limited this week, so we travel whenever possible.

Need to vent so here I am. I have two little kids. In the last month I’ve been asked twice if I’m pregnant (I’m not). I went out to eat alone recently at a restaurant I’ve loved in the past and what I hoped would be a relaxing leisurely meal without kids was spoiled by a crappy server rushing me out. Literally none of my work clothes fit – my body has totally changed, not just weighing more but also my shape is different. I’m out trying to shop for new clothes and just want to cry – I feel awkward in my body, ugly, invisible. Any advice? Been there done that?

I’m so sorry! That sounds really hard. My body is totally different after having two kids so I can sympathize with that. It sounds like both of your kids are still really little. It will get easier! One thing that has really helped me is exercise (for endorphins and stress management not for trying to get back to pre-baby body). Also, I try to do one thing every single day that I enjoy. I know it sounds impossible but when that thing is small (getting a nice coffee or taking a walk at lunch) there is often time in the day for it. I’m thinking of you and hoping things get easier!

Hi – I feel like I could have written this post at any point.
As someone with a short torso and a slight tummy – since I was 12 and even at my thinnest – I’ve OFTEN been asked if I am pregnant. And this was before kids – sometimes I laughed it off, other times I cried. After kids…even when not gestating I’ve been asked constantly. I remember someone offering their seat to me on public transit when my first kid was ~6 months old because…I looked like I was pregnant (and I took the seat).
I was recently asked if I was pregnant earlier this year – my youngest had just turned 2. I also lost 0 weight with breastfeeding, and not until each kid was ~2 did I return to exercise and eating well/mindfully.
Right now (youngest is 2.5) I’m still working on getting in shape but I’m also trying to figure out what “fit” looks like at almost 40 after 2 small kids and my own fair share of trauma. I’m not happy where I am but I also know I’m doing the best I can – it sounds like you are, too.
Also, if I may, most trendy clothes right now are…geared towards a very specific body type/body mentality…this isn’t a you problem.

Been there 100%. I gained just over 50 lbs with both my pregnancies. I used to be a runner, struggled to make the time for it after kids, and nothing from my pre-baby days fits, even though I’ve (slowly, painfully) lost the majority of the weight. While I’m much closer to my goals than I was a year or two ago, I really struggle with comparing myself to the SAHMs in my social circle who are perfect size 4s and have all the time in the world to make salads and go to the gym. I am most definitely not a size 4.
What has helped me a lot is finding a workout that makes me feel good in my body. Then I really look forward to it and it helps my confidence a ton, regardless of the number on the scale. Do you have a partner? Could that partner help you set aside the time for this? You can do it!
