A woman wearing a white top, blue jeans, and khaki trench coat

This classic trench coat is the transitional piece my wardrobe is missing.

This long trench is made from a smooth, water-resistant fabric that will protect you from spring showers. The looser fit accommodates an extra layer for cooler, morning commutes. Wear it on the weekends to elevate everything from jeans to sweats.

Gap’s Icon Trench Coat is $168 and comes in sizes XXS-XXL. It is also available in tall and petite sizes.

You guys give great gift suggestions. Just found out my friend’s 4 year old broke her leg! She’s stuck at home for at least a week. Anything I could send to the family, either something fun for the kiddo or a relief for the parents? I was thinking one of those draw-by-sticker books, but open to any ideas. Thank you!

This might be too late in the day for this but all the vacation talk is reminding me- we have gift cards to Great Wolf Lodge. I’ve never been. We have a 2 and 4 year old. Any experiences, tips, thoughts?

It’s been a rough week with my 3.75 year old. But he’s getting close to reaching our goal on a reward chart tracking just one particular task, and I have told him I will get him a surprise of some sort when he first reaches 7 stars in a row. Any recommendations for something in the $15-20 range I can get on A-zon (would prefer to buy locally, but I can’t make it to the shops right now)? Ideally something he can play with and that will keep him interested for a while. What have your kids this age liked?

When you play games with your kids, do you play to win?

DH and I are of differing opinions about this– he always plays to win (and so wins every time) and I play to draw out the fun (which usually means not winning). Generally, this is fine, but lately it’s been really bothering me to the point where I have started to say something to him about it. I am looking for a gut check as to whether this is a reasonable thing to expect him to do differently. E.g., he plays chess with our 8-year old (who only just learned this year) and beats him every time. Last time they were setting up, I whispered to DH “teach him, don’t just beat him.” Any time they play any game with any kind of strategy (even a weak one, like Clue) DH trounces the kid without really giving him a fighting chance (or explaining the strategy!).

I feel like this might be rooted in DH having been the youngest sibling who always played his hardest to win against older siblings who showed no mercy. But, sir, you are 34 years older than him, it’s no longer a flex to win! Is it reasonable for me to ask DH to knock it off and TEACH the kid the strategy rather than beating him at every game?

For those of you posting about the Disney cruises, what ages are your kids? I have a kid who would probably love it, but everything I hear about the park makes it sound like you have to plan it like a military operation and wait in tons of lines. But I also don’t know if I’m comfortable with my young kid on a boat.

Reading the responses to the travel questions below, there is a lot of mention of Disney. My kids are 8, 7, and 3 and we have never been to Disney, and to be honest I don’t really want to go to Disney. It’s expensive and logistically complicated (and yes I know I can throw money at the problem to make it less complicated but then it’s even MORE expensive). What do you all think about just…not taking them, ever? They are not super into Disney stuff (tho the big kids like Star Wars and Harry Potter). I don’t think a ton of their friends have gone — we don’t live in an area where people have a lot of money for vacations. But maybe I’m just trying to convince myself…what do you all think? Should I just grit my teeth and plan a Disney vacation or pass?

Parents who have stairs – how old were your children when you removed the (bottom) gate? DD is 2.5, she is getting much better and going up and down the stairs. I will be keeping the top gate for a while because I don’t want her falling down on the way to the bathroom or something. But our bottom gate has a screw that is coming out of the wall (weirdly shaped old stairs so we had to get a custom system) and I’m wondering if I should pay to get it fixed or can tough it out for a bit longer and then remove the gate. We are trying for #2, but if it gets to that, I will pay to have a new system installed when the time comes (we may move in the next 2 years anyway).

This is a first world issue I know, but when you’ve had an especially magical or perfect family vacation and your kids beg to repeat it, do you? Assuming money/time permits. DH and I both feel like future trips never quite recapture the magic of the first time and tarnish the memories of the first trip a little bit, but I’m more open to repeating for the sake of the kids. I’m talking about repeating something very specific like Disney World or returning to the same all-inclusive resort, not just going to Italy twice or something like that.
