A box for a puzzle called "Frost Yourself," on top of a Christmas tablecloth

During the holidays, my husband’s extended family always breaks out a 1,000-piece puzzle like this one to finish together.

Piecework Puzzles has tons of jigsaw puzzles to choose from, but I especially like this Christmas Cookie puzzle. The festive, 1,000-piece design is filled with baking tools and holiday treats.

This puzzle would make a great early holiday gift (I can say this now that Halloween is almost out of the way) for the puzzler in your family.

This “Frost Yourself” Puzzle is $40.

Sigh. I have to tell my mom this weekend that we’re enrolling our kid in camp on a more full time basis for next summer, and I’m dreading the conversation because I know it will not go well. My mom is an awesome grandma and generally a reliable person but she takes vacations and gets sick and last summer we ended up with 3 weeks with no afternoon coverage and it was just too much. Plus, kiddo is getting older and wants to do specific camps with friends, some of which are full day. We’re still giving my mom a ‘Camp Grandma’ week or two and not enrolling kiddo in any camp aftercare programs so my mom will be able to pick up at 3 pm most weeks, but I know it won’t be enough for her and I’m really not looking forward to managing those emotions, even though I know it’s the price we pay for all the benefits of local grandparents.

I suspect my 11 year old might have a dietary sensitivity. She has horrible, stinky gas– worse than my other child, worse than other kids, seems like. She has a very healthy diet, lots of grains, vegetables, fruit, yogurt, fiber, low-processed, and varied protein sources. We’ve always tried to normalize bodily functions and not make a big deal of it, but now that she is in middle school, she’s more sensitive about it. She actually said that if she could have one wish it would be that her farts were not so stinky. I will ask the pediatrician, but how do you check for this– elimination diet and symptoms journaling?

Oof, I’m staring down a doozy of a November. Husband’s boss is signed off sick for a few weeks, so he’s covering him, my 8 year old has come out of school near tears for the last 2 days running b/c of teasing, I’m drowning in grading and it looks like my sabbatical is on the chopping block. We’re also planning to move in the new year, with all the chaos that that entails. Beyond Shots Shots Shots, any wise advice for powering through a really tough few months?

Kid is asking for Sphero for Christmas. They used them at school, but honestly, they seem like the appeal would wear off pretty quickly. Can anyone speak to whether they are any fun?

Any suggestions for 8 year old boys who requested arts and crafts stuff? I have an 8 year old girl who loooves art but I feel like a lot of her art interests skew too girly at this point (bracelet making, gem art, fashioner design kits etc). I’ve sent modeling clay and fancy watercolors before.

Keep the puzzle recommendations coming! I host Christmas eve and we love working on puzzles.

Speaking of puzzles — someone on here recommended the Magic Puzzle Company a few years ago and it was SUCH a great idea. We now do one every Christmas/Thanksgiving/vacation and even younger kids get into it because the story and special pieces are so cool and the mystery at the end is super fun. If you are looking for a Thanksgiving puzzle then I’d highly recommend! We have ours out at the dining table all day, put a tablecloth over the puzzle-in-progress when it’s time to eat, and then keep working after dinner.
