Inspired by the discussions on college on the main site today: what are your aspirations for your kids and do you/to what extent do you try to guide them to those?

Looking for an August vacation destination traveling solo with my baby who will be 10 months. I’m considering San Miguel de Allende for colorful walks and good food? Would love other thoughts, do not want a beach or anything very hot and we are already doing Maine. No overnight flights.

Picking up on HSAL’s question below – how did you become close enough with neighbors to ask favors? We moved in three years ago, and we regularly chat with all the grandparent-aged neighbors and we’re outside a lot–especially in the front yard doing chalk or bubbles or scooters. But I rarely see the families in the houses who have similar-aged kids–5 and under. Is it different once the kids are school aged?

I coach a kids sport team and we’re traveling to a competition where we’ll stay in a dorm for three nights. My plan when registering had been just to register the team and let them be assigned roommates, as most rooms will probably be two or three kids to a room. Moms have started coordinating roommates behind the scenes and I’m getting texts about roommate requests from moms. I find it absolutely nuts as these are 12-13 yos and they can sort out their rooming situation themselves. Am I crazy to think that parents should just stay out of this? Heck, I wasn’t planning to get into it as the coach. IMO, the kids can sleep anywhere they want as long as it’s in a room.

These kids all know each other really well, have been on the same team for more than 5 years, and all generally get along. The room is also just for sleeping. We won’t be there much at all.

The main page thread about the mom who asked for a ride for her child was really interesting to me. Not trying to revisit that part here, but it did make me wonder – what’s the best/biggest favor a neighbor has done for you? Or that you’ve done for a neighbor? It’s been almost two and a half years since my husband died, and I’m over three hours away from my nearest family. I don’t think I’d be living here without my neighbors. Occasional ride home from a school activity? Watch two of my kids while I take the third to a doctor appointment? Take all three so I can run into work for an after-school meeting? I’ve had to lean into my village hard, and I’ve appreciated it so much. I try to return the favors when I can, but I also know people often don’t want to ask me.

Anyone have a kid really chip their ADULT teeth? Dentist is unfussed by this, but he’s got a huge chunk out of both top front teeth. I was so pleased he inherited my perfect American teeth, versus his dad’s juice in a bottle teeth, but they did not survive their encounter with the skatepark ramp :(
