Brown is a great alternative to black this season. Here’s a layering piece you’ll find countless ways to wear as the weather cools.
This 100% Responsible Wool Standard merino wool top is an easy way to add warmth without bulk. Wear it under a blazer or sweater jacket during the week and under a puffer vest or nubby sweater on the weekend. There are even thumbhole cuffs in case you forget your gloves.
COS’s crewneck merino wool top is $89. It also comes in seven other colors/patterns and is available in sizes XS-L. For another option, consider this top from REI in sizes 1X-3X in eight colors/patterns (some on sale for $23!).

Based on the conversation on the main page yesterday afternoon, how many hours a week do you work (on average) and roughly how much time do you spend with your kids on a normal weeknight?
I work ~35-50 hours a week. Hybrid, 2 days in office, 3 days WFH, sometimes a different mix. DH is BigLaw and works 65-80 hours/week and/or is on travel. If he ascends (which I think he will), we will have to make some adjustments. I don’t want to exit the workforce, I don’t really have skills where I can work part-time in a fulfilling way, and I don’t want to outsource much more than we already do, so we will see.
Time with 2 kids – 3.75 and almost 7, no weeknight activities right now.
Weekday mornings – 6 AM-7:10 AM – This is mostly just getting ready and out the door for carpool.
Weekday evenings – 5-8 PM – This includes everything from pickup from two schools to lights out, and has been a huge slog lately – like yesterday everyone (including me) was in tears multiple times. I’m trying to make it better. I’m usually solo or solo with help for most of this time.
Weekends we are trying to spend more time together as a unit, but we also divide and conquer between DH and I. I’m also trying to re-jigger the kids’ activities. Older kid has a monthly scout meeting on a weekend afternoon, which is a very recent addition.
We typically all hang out together from 5:30-8:30 each weeknight. I get an extra hour in the mornings; my husband usually picks up around 4:45 but they often stop by a park or the store or something to give me a little extra work time. So from the kid perspective, that’s almost 5 hours of parent time daily, but it’s not always both of us. We’re mostly all together on weekends with a bit of trading off here and there.
I would say that we both have medium jobs – they’re demanding, but it could definitely be a lot more in both our fields. I do “big” cases but at a boutique firm, not big-law, and I work remotely. My husband deliberately chose a job with good work-life balance for his field, but there is still some call and research work outside of regular hours. I would say that we average 45-50 hours of work per week, but some of that is after bedtime and usually a few hours each on the weekend while the other parent does an outing.
One other thing I would note is that I often feel like I do the same amount of work in 45 hours per week now that might have taken me 55+ hours 5 years ago. I’ve become much more efficient since becoming a parent. It’s a combination of working remotely and straight up “needs must.”
Ideas for improving sibling relations for slightly older kids? My big kids are 6 and 8 and go through these periods where they are just taking little (verbal) swipes at each other all the time. In the scheme of things it’s not so bad — they aren’t physically violent, there’s no name-calling. But sometimes it’s like if they have the choice to say something positive, neutral, or negative, they cannot help but go with the negative option. Example: the 6yo kicks a ball, the 8yo says condescendingly “I can kick better than that.” Or the 8yo is singing a song and the 6yo says “UGH, STOP IT!” rather than asking her politely. I think this is all well within the realm of normal but it drives me insane. I suspect there is no magic solution, but thought I’d ask just in case…
(and yes I have read siblings without rivalry!)
(and to be fair to them, sometimes they can play together happily for hour…last night they were “ninjas” together, so they both put on black outfits, snuck around the house, and tried to pick locks with bobby pins)
How active is your kid’s social life? I have a first grader and a transitional kindergartener (CA thing).
Their social calendars are pretty full. Fall seems to be the most active for some reason with birthday parties, Halloween parties with friends or classmates and more.
My daughter especially seems to have a massive group of girl friends. My son is still finding his way as a little guy though I also expect his social circle will look different than a girls.
I’m just wondering if this is the new norm or specific to a middle/upper middle socioeconomic status.
I grew up working class and almost all of my social activities were limited to family events until I could drive. Even birthday parties with friends was uncommon.
HELP….. we are high achieving ladies… what are your ACTUALLY 15 min prep meals?
I made pasta last night for our family + in-laws who were staying and boiling water + cooking pasta = 30 mins [given more people more water to boil… but still], so by the time i tossed the cooked pasta in my sauce, served and herded people to the table, it was 40 mins…..
This isn’t 15 mins but all the the steps below can be done from when you put the pot of water on the stove and this is our favorite family dinner right now: while water boils / pasta cooks – i chopped up chicken tenders and cooked in saute pan then dumped in tomatoes / peppers and pine nuts, when cooked dump in as much spinach as you can (use up your sad bag that you didn’t get through) until spinach cooks down, generally WAY more than we would eat in a salad), dumped drained pasta on top, sprinkle with mozzeralla and several spoonfuls of pesto. Toss and serve. Carrots sticks and cukes on the side, or cesar if inlaws are there [i don’t always do the chicken].
Does anyone here have experience living in lower Westchester? We’re considering moving to one of the close in suburbs (Bronxville, Larchmont and Pelham) and having a hard time weighing the communities (particularly as it relates to ease of making friends and having a good life balance with both parents working relatively big, although flexible, jobs).
OMG, I don’t know what to do with this information, so I’ll put it here. I had a very, very “vivid” dream about a very handsome dad who is coaching my child’s soccer team. I will see him tonight at practice, and it is totally messing with my head! I am happily married, but whew! Wild dream came out of nowhere. I feel low key embarrassed. That’s all. Wish me luck, ha!
What are your best present ideas for a 4 year old girl? My daughter is turning 4 in a few weeks and I have a few ideas, but curious what others have done.
