Winter is getting serious around here so I’m stocking up on fleece-lined leggings for my oldest.
I wish I had these when I was a kid — these look like regular leggings on the outside but are lined with soft and plush fleece on the inside for snuggly warmth. They’re made from an easy-care cotton/poly blend with a hint of stretch for comfort, and your kid will be reaching for them until the first blooms of spring.
These leggings are on sale at Primary for $18.25. They come in eight colors in sizes 2–14.

Tales from a Snow Day: during my first call of the day, my six year old helpfully left me alone in my office. However, he unhelpfully loudly used and flushed the toilet in the bathroom adjoining my office. At least I was on camera so it was clear it wasn’t *me* peeing during the call! Happy Friday, y’all :)
Cerulean says
I love Primary, but the Cat & Jack fleece leggings at Target are half the price and pretty great!
AwayEmily says
Ha, I opened up the comment page to say exactly this! And they come in toddler and big kid sizes.
Anonymous says
Yep, my 3-yo wants all pants to be like the Cat & Jack fleece leggings!
anon says
I want to love the Cat&Jack leggings but they don’t fit my skinny kids. :( We live in the cotton leggings, but the same size in the fleece ones just falls right off their hips. Anyone know if the Primary ones are similar sized?
Anonymous says
Primary runs narrower and definitely doesn’t fit my muscular kid.
anonamommy says
Mom hack: I sew a small dart in the waistband of leggings. Is it perfect? No. But it takes less than 10 minutes and is worth the effort to get them to fit better on my kid.
anon says
Good to know! I’ve thought about this but wasn’t sure if it would actually hold up, so glad to know it works.

Any highlights from the week? Things you are looking forward to over the weekend?
I picked my son up after school today and we went to the library and lunch before walking home and he’s at such a fun age for chats. I’m at the point where I genuinely don’t always know the answers to his questions because he’s got such a range of interests.
We’re (hopefully) going on a day trip to meet the cousins but Storm Isha might have other plans.

My husband returns tomorrow night after a whole week of work travel! I have three kids, am pregnant and had Covid last week….so I am looking forward to a nap on Sunday! (And the fancy European chocolate he is bringing back for me.)
Cb says
All the naps for you! Where has he been? I hope it’s very fancy chocolate.

Switzerland – Davos (but he is not one of the billionaires, he is in media lol). So I’m hoping it’s very good!
Anonymous says
the Davos attendee list is so broad now. several people I work with are there and im like, what?
Mary Moo Cow says
Highlight: a Hello Fresh meal that was actually very good, starting a new book that is surprisingly holding my interest, and choosing to skip a volunteer board meeting with zero guilt. Over the weekend, I’m looking forward to hanging out with a friend and an acquittance I hope will turn into a friend.
Cb, I hope your trip goes ahead!

My oldest lost his first tooth this week, and he happened to be at home due to a cold day! It was a great moment (if a little weird – I was surprised it bled so much! And, his questions were good and made me think about how strange this tradition really is. What DOES the tooth fairy do with all those kid teeth?!)
Anonymous says
She builds her kingdom/castles with them. Or at least that is what Google tells me :)
Anonymous says
That is what I concluded as a kid! The idea now grosses me out.

We have a two hour delayed start due to a dusting of snow (and we’re in the Midwest where this kind of snow is really NBD, so it’s kind of annoying) but I dropped my kid off at 8;30 at her neighbor bestie’s and the other mom is taking them to school. I did the same thing for her on Monday’s delayed start.
People talk a lot about how much logistically harder elementary school is, and it’s true in some ways, but it’s also been much easier in a lot of ways I didn’t anticipate. Having neighbor friends we can swap childcare with on all the days off and delayed starts, and having someone to carpool with has really been a game-changer. Plus SO much less illness than daycare. That alone has improved my quality of life tenfold.
Cb says
I agree, there are a few people where we could panic message and because we’re all headed to and from the same school, it’s an easier favour to ask. Before Christmas, aftercare forgot my son and his bestie/dad were closer than we were, so went and got him from the office, and when their car broke down last week, we picked their son up and he joined us for dinner (he remains very impressed we ate waffles on a random Wednesday).
Anon says
how many kids do you have? i have twins and i can’t just easily drop them at someone’s house bc it’s a lot to add 2 kids to the mix
Anon says
I only have one kid, but I know lots of families with two kids who carpool or trade childcare for snow days, and we have hosted sibling pairs before. Although I can see how there’s less need to have a friend over if your kids already have a sibling to play with!
Anonymous says
Really? I’ve had friends drop of 3 kids before and I have 2. So 5 kids ages 4-8. Have you asked anyone? A lot of times we think people aren’t willing to help and they are! We find more kids to be easier because they just play and thus leave me alone :) I’m just there for snacks and safety.
Anonymous says
+1
Anon says
I also have twins and you have to find the right people, but it’s totally doable. Also gets way easier once they hit elementary school, since our friends can easily fit 2 extra boosters in their cars but couldn’t fit 2 more carseats.

Midwest here. My highlight is surviving nearly two weeks of snowstorms and cold with several school closures. Work deadlines are still being met, but I haven’t gotten ahead.
This weekend: kiddo has a swim meet that we are all excited about. And I am eagerly awaiting temperatures above freezing next week!
avocado says
Highlight: We had fresh snow the night before a teacher workday so I got to take my daughter skiing in great conditions with low crowds. The weather here has been so warm the past few winters that this might have been our last chance to ski this season.
This weekend: Kiddo’s last birthday party before she goes off to college. Themed birthday parties with elaborately decorated homemade cakes are a tradition from my own childhood that I kept going for my daughter, so I will be spending Saturday rolling fondant while kiddo and her bestie construct a balloon arch.
Anon says
sounds like such a special week/weekend! cannot believe your kiddo is 18. does she know where she is heading yet?
avocado says
She does! She was awarded a generous merit scholarship to her first choice school, which is an excellent but not tippy-top ranked SLAC that is very strong in her major and ticks all her boxes in terms of size, personal attention, freshman experience, culture, etc. For many reasons I am happy that she opted out of the ivy league/top school rat race. The only catch is that this wasn’t one of the schools she chose for her college tour last year, so we are waiting until we visit next month to put down the deposit. I am sure it will meet her expectations when she sees it in person. I am so excited for her. Her dad is also excited for her but is having a more difficult time processing the idea that his little girl is about to leave the nest.
Anon says
Your kid is going to college already?! Man, I’ve been on this board a long time. Congrats on all these big milestones.
Anon says
I know, I remember when she was 11/12 and you were bringing her to walks and events surrounding the 2016 election! (I’m not a weirdo, just have a good memory and we’ve come to feel like we know each other here!)

Yep! I have been here since the very beginning and may be the last one of the original posters still hanging around. I will miss this community when it’s time to move on.

this morning (at 6:45am) DH was trying to tell our 5.5 year old twins that unicorns and dragons aren’t real (i was annoyed), but then conceded that they were, and then said that narwhals definitely aren’t real. without missing a beat one of my twins says “Uncle W asked Siri and Siri said they are real” as if Siri is the authority on life… My MIL is coming to visit this weekend which can be hit or miss depending on everyone’s moods. she was much better with the kids when they were toddlers
Anonymous says
What? Narwhals are 100% real!
Anon says
Yeah this confused me too!
Anonymous says
That’s why it’s so funny!

Chess club at the library. My oldest has a keen interest, plays the computer and me & DH, but I really want him to play with people who are at his level (I think there’s a couple kids at his aftercare he plays, that’s how he learned). Should be fun!
Boston Legal Eagle says
A highlight that I’ll share to give hope to others here who may be struggling: a diagnosis of ADHD for my kid that will hopefully give him the supports that he needs to really thrive and be the good kid we all know he is. I’ve been reading here a lot about other parents with questions about ADHD, and I just have to say, trust your mom instincts and ask questions. None of us have to do this alone, not us moms and not our kids. Mental health supports have come a long way, and I am grateful.
Other than that, weekend is supposed to be cold, so maybe this snow will stick around and we can actually go skiing on Sunday! We’re also going to see a local production of Wizard of Oz put on by town kids and I imagine it will be so cute (and I can see my younger kid getting into theatre).
Momofthree says
Congrats Boston Eagle! We also just got the diagnosis for our oldest (ADHD+ other things). I’m hopeful that it will be helpful b/c it does explain things so clearly & the report lays out the supports that he will need. I’m disheartened though b/c my husband has been discounting it and saying that I’m trying to pathologize my kid, which hurts. My son has innate intelligence which has gotten him this far, but I see a world of hurt ahead when he has homework or has to do multiple steps on his own if we do nothing, to say nothing of the behaviorial and emotional challenges we’ve been having for years.
I hope that the diagnosis helps you get the right supports you need for your kid.
More Sleep Would Be Nice says
Sending you a big hug. This sounds like it has given you some peace, and I’m so happy for you and your family that now you have a roadmap that you all feel good about.
I hope you feel safe to share your journey here, I always enjoy and learn so much from your perspective.

I am having girlfriends over for Mahjong tomorrow night! Last November, one of the other friends had us over and we had a lesson on how to play Mahjong (there are two women in our area that have a whole business just teaching Mahjong). So, I got a set of Mahjong tiles for Christmas and my MIL, who is local and a fabulous person generally, and who has played for 15 years, is coming over to walk us through how to play tomorrow night. We’re all excited to try and keep this up and get better. It was fun learning a new game!

Today’s highlight! Snow day – home with all three kids (12, 6 and 4) plus our neighbor’s kid (4). My 12 tear old made mac and cheese and fed everyone lunch while I was on a work call. Parenting a tween has been soooooo challenging for me, but moments like this give me hope.
anonamommy says
My kid has these and they are great. Any suggestions for adult fleece-lined leggings?
AwayEmily says
I have so many pairs of fleece-lined leggings. My basic ones (just cotton leggings with fleece inside) are from Old Navy and they are fine, though do start to pill after a couple of years and have zero windproofing. My favorites are from Eddie Bauer — “Women’s Crossover Winter Trail Adventure High-Rise Leggings.” They are SUPER comfortable and warm. I also have the LLBean PrimaLoft ThermaStretch Fleece Tights and I don’t like them as much, especially for the money — they are mid-rise and tend to sag a little. Warm, tho. Old Navy also makes some more “technical” fleece-lined leggings but I found them super bulky (tho those were from a few years ago so maybe the model changed).
Boston Legal Eagle says
I have the LLBean ones and I agree on the sagging after a few wears, but so warm! I wear them all winter. I got a compliment on them from a fellow mom (about the multiple pockets) so I’ll take it as a win.
Anonymous says
I have the Altitude fleece tights from Athleta and they are very warm. A lot of people like Athleta’s Rainier tights, which are less bulky, but I find the weird zip pockets on the thighs to be irritating.
Anon says
Uniqlo! Just bought some fleece lined heat tech leggings. $20 on sale.

I realized a couple weeks ago that I forgot to tell one of my friends that I am (very) pregnant. I’m not a big texter, and we usually catch up in person every few months. I have been pregnant and tired and haven’t had the energy to make plans, she’s been going through some things too. But I feel like I definitely should have told her like three months ago minimum. Now I feel so awkward about it and worried her feelings are going to be hurt. Any suggestions about how to tell her now?
Anon says
Tell her what you said here. “Sorry, I feel like a jerk for not telling you earlier, but I really wanted to tell you in person and I just haven’t had the energy to make plans so I didn’t share this until now.”
Anonymous says
+1 I wouldn’t be hurt at all. This happens, it’s just the stage of life we’re all at.
Anonymous says
Tell her today, it will only be worse if you wait until tomorrow. Just like it’s worse now than it was when you realized 3 weeks ago.
“ok, i’m blaming hormones here, but i just realized i have extremely big news that I never told you. I’m pregnant! I’m due X. Please forgive this and any future oversights. “
An.On. says
“I just realized I hadn’t told you I’m pregnant! I kept thinking I would see you in person and I only just realized how long it’s been since we’ve gotten together. I hope you’re doing well, and [I’d love to see you soon/I’m doing great but can’t wait for this baby/it’s been hectic and I want to sleep for 18 hours a day but I’m making it through/etc].”
test run says
+1 one to this scripting and echoing everyone else that I would 100% not have my feelings hurt about this. I’m sure your friend will just be very excited for you!
Anonymous says
I just wanted to say, if I were your friend, I wouldn’t be upset or offended at all. Tell her today! And congratulations!
Anon says
Just text her today. There are many reasons people wait to share pregnancy news. I wouldn’t even really apologize…something like “Hi X, I have some very exciting news! We’re having a baby! Baby is due Y, other details, etc. It seems we’ve both been pretty busy lately, but I’d love to made a plan to catch up very soon. Are you free next week for dinner?”
A friend understands these things. A friend choosing to be hurt because you didn’t share news on their timeline says more about that person than you.
Anin says
Ummm, I forgot to tell one of my friends until I mentioned my 4 month old son by name in my text update and she was like “who’s Joe?” It’s so common. She wasn’t offended at all. Just let your friend know!
Anon says
Omg what?!? That’s a lot weirder than what OP did
Anonymous says
has anyone seen the Mean Girls reboot/ movie-musical? My almost 11 year old wants to see it and I’m having trouble finding reviews to see if I’m going to let her. I LOVED the first one and was planning to watch it together with her because some of the scenes have not aged well. She got invited to see the new one this weekend.
We let her see Barbie, as a point of reference.
Anon says
I haven’t seen it but can’t imagine it being inappropriate for an 11 year old.
Anonymous says
There is a big song and dance number commenting on $exy Halloween costumes. I would not have a problem with an 11-year-old’s seeing it, but YMMV.
I general I trust Common Sense Media’s reviews. They point out all the content and messages that parents or kids might have an issue with and leave you to make your own decisions about what’s appropriate for your family.
Anon says
On this note, has anyone noticed that JCrew seems to be majorly slimming down their kids selection? All the styles of pants my son wears are no longer available on the main website? My son is a total string bean (super tall too, so pants are really hard because the ones that fit his waist are way too short). Any suggestions for other good brands for skinny kids?
Mary Moo Cow says
Have you tried J. Crew Factory? My J.Crew store doesn’t carry kids but the Factory store does, and the online store has some offerings.
I have girls, but Primary has worked for my tall, slim kid. Hanna Andersson is hit or miss.
Anon says
Zara runs skinny and Gap has a “slim” size range for boys

I started my summer 2025 planning spreadsheet today. No, that’s not a typo. 🫠
Anon says
So out of curiosity, why this early? At least around here, we don’t have a 24-25 school calendar yet (so don’t know which weeks we need camp) and the earliest registration dates I know of for summer 2025 aren’t until Nov 2024
Anonymous says
Camp info is definitely not available yet, but my husband already has several weeks of work travel planned, including some that the whole family may tag along for, and my mom (who lives with us and helps in the summers) also has some travel planned already. It’s not strictly necessary to make a spreadsheet this early but I like to put this info all in one place as we get it to make sure I don’t double book things and to try to coordinate our vacations with my mom being gone.
We do get the school calendars a couple years in advance (we have through ‘25-26) but they basically don’t change from year to year anyway so I know what weeks summer break will be without looking at the calendar.
