This is a random question. Do any of you have kids that just aren’t as into toys/”stuff”?
My kids are pretty content playing with stuffed animals, re-arranging couch cushions to play various scenarios, etc. Other current favorites: tray puzzles, connecting tubes to play pretend. And I’m not some austere minimalist, I promise!
Like last year for Christmas, after working on a list together, my older kid just wanted some books and a football, and I made a gift list for my younger one who was newly 4, but none of it was like the specific big toys that are often given.
When you go out for a meal, outing, and/or vacation with parents or in-laws, do you split costs or do they pay? My in-laws are very well off but did not pay our costs for a recent group vacation (we covered our own flights, hotel, and most meals), and it annoyed me. I guess this is something that should have been discussed beforehand and maybe I’m being entitled… but I just sort of assumed they would pay.
If you were going out of town for a girls’ trip this weekend, what would you do beforehand to make things easier for your spouse while you are gone? (Yes he’s perfectly capable of doing everything himself, but I just want to help him out a bit.)
Favorite stick sunscreens and hats for kids? Kids are 6 and 8. Thank you!
Posted on the main site late yesterday afternoon, and the few responses I got over there made me think this side might have a different perspective. Essentially, our apartment is small and old and not well maintained, and now that the baby is a toddler it’s really getting difficult to live in this space. However, rent is cheap. Very cheap. We could move to a nicer apartment/house, but it would double our rental cost and we would essentially have to give up eating out, new clothes, local travel only, and we keep our 2010 car as long as we can. I don’t think that there’s a right answer or won’t answer here, but what would you do: nicer place to live but get fewer of life’s luxuries, or try to make the old cramped place work so you can keep those little luxuries.
My 5yo daughter has been coming into our room every night for about 8 months now. She used to wake us up, and then we (really, I) would walk her back and put her to bed. Now she brings her blankets and a pillow and sets herself up to sleep on the hardwood floor next to our bed. If I wake up when she’s coming in, I’ll take her back to her room and tuck her in and stay for a few minutes, but most of the time I sleep through her arrival and don’t realize she’s there until morning.
She says she wakes up and she’s scared of the dark so she comes to get us. We’ve tried night lights and sound machines, and even leaving her bedside lamp on overnight. I’m sure it’s not that it’s the dark, but rather she’d like to be physically near us (really, me).
Any thoughts on what I can do to help keep her in her bed overnight?
In your opinion, what is the perfect setup for a summer birthday party for a five year old?
Ugh. My 7 year old can’t do her aftercare program next year because they didn’t notify me about the signup. They claim they sent me emails about renewing but I never received anything; they must have a typo in my email address. They also say they sent me a bunch of emails I never received about a billing issue, so it’s not just a case of me missing one email. The actual aftercare piece is not a disaster (I WFH, kiddo is pretty independent and we have some local family help), so we’re fortunate in that way, but several of her best friends attend the program and she’s going to be really upset that she won’t be with them next year. I’m so annoyed. The college kids who work there are nice but the admin is crap.
Posted this on the main page late yesterday but now here – any tips for weaning quickly? I’ve been winding down on pumping for weeks and am down to 3 pumps per day (morning, noon, and bedtime) but my supply is stubbornly stuck. I’d like to stop the midday pump next but I also want to make sure I don’t get mastitis. Sudafed isn’t working so far. Any ideas?
You all told me that it was a bad idea to let my dual-citizen kid’s American passport lapse, and I am returning to tell you, you were right! Your moment of smug for the day.
Our local consulate is closing as a result of state department nonsense, my passport is also expired (I have British citizenship so I fly on that), and now it’s going to require a trip to NI to renew.
I did think in November “I really should renew our passports before January…” and then chided myself for being overly dramatic.
