If you were considering having +/- 30 13 year old girls over for a birthday party, what kinds of things would you do/plan? Outdoor, fall-ish weather.

Ideas so far are have music playing, outdoor movie, DIY dirty soda bar.

My 10 YO is constantly saying he hates school and he doesn’t understand why he has to go. While he has had flare ups of this attitude in the past, this year is the first time it’s been consistent. He won’t give me any more details (despite patient questioning by me) just that it’s stupid and he doesn’t see the point of anything he’s learning. He’s generally a strong student and adamantly denies that it’s too challenging or that he’s struggling (if anything he seems to feel things are boring).

is this just 10 YO boy and I should ignore it? or what else could I do?

My Healthcare Flexible Spending Account has been a pain to navigate. They paid my dental claim in full but then blocked other payments until I submit a receipt for the dental visit. I had to call the dental office three times over two weeks to get the statement. Then I sent it to my FSA and they paid only part of it, for some reason, and says they need a receipt for the rest. Now I need to call them to figure out what is going on. I can’t log in through my computer for some reason – can only access the account portal through the app on my phone. And I have other medical bills that I can’t pay until this gets resolved. Are Healthcare FSAs worth it anymore?

I’m in danger of layoffs and need to make an effort, but I’m finding it difficult for both motivation and practical reasons.

I’ve gone down to a reduced schedule after returning from maternity leave and am missing important communications and emails from my boss because of he chooses to have meetings on my day off. I’m generally taken less seriously because of taking leave, and there’s somewhat casually sexist culture. I’m the most senior woman in my department and have several male peers.

Meanwhile, I’m totally burnt out on my job and company, maybe industry, don’t have time for exercise, and have a lot of life and house projects to juggle.

We could take the financial hit of me not working for a year, and that’s kind of what I’d like to do, so maybe a layoff is actually what I need.. but AI is hitting my industry hard and I’m worried I won’t be able to find something else at this level of seniority if I don’t look now while I have a job.

And people don’t talk about this a lot, but “leaning out” feels bad. I don’t enjoy it. I’m already not a perfectionist, so leaning out for me looks less like reducing work quality and more like not pursuing the number or depth of strategic goals I think are important.

Any words of advice or helpful content for getting my head on straight about all this?

I posted earlier this week (last?) about my reactive 8 year old. You all gave me much to think about and talk to DH about, too.

Maybe she’s just in a funk, but this has been a really hard week with her. For a couple nights in a row, she wasn’t falling asleep because she claims to be worrying about things but can’t name the thing. I’m talking like up until 11pm or later, in tears, when she’d been reliably an 8:30 lights out/asleep kid. DD swears nothing happened to her at school or elsewhere, and I trust her on that. It sounds like anxiety. There have also been several more (and more frequent) outbursts about us saying benign things (“time to brush your teeth so we can get out the door”) that are met with huge explosions out of nowhere (“so you’re saying I never do anything right!” stomping away, crying). This is some of what I described in my earlier post but this morning DH and I were like… woah, this is multiple times a day just since the weekend.

I did end up emailing her teacher to see if DD was reacting negatively to being wrong/getting corrected at school after her outburst while we reviewed her homework together, and her teacher – who is excellent and very experienced, so we trust her immensely – says DD is “a model student” showing nothing other than excellence in the classroom. Teacher said she would make note and report back if anything changed. So, arguing against myself here, but the fact this is all happening seemingly in our home makes we wonder if it’s not A Diagnosable, Treatable Thing and just a “let down” at home in her safe space.

All that to say, if this continues and the concerns about anxiety mount from DH and I, what would an appropriate next move be? Is this a portal message to her pedi? Her next regularly scheduled appointment isn’t until May. I know there are IEPs for anxiety, which I don’t think we are anywhere close to needing but my point/question is, is this something the school would help with? This is all very new, and I don’t even know where we’d start getting her help if we decide that she actually would benefit from, say, talking to a therapist or something.

For context on my end, I come from a stone cold emotionless Irish Catholic family. I’m trying so hard to be emotionally stronger/better/more available for my kids than my parents were for us. But, in my quest to be emotionally available sometimes I’m sensitive to whether or not I’m over correcting, so to speak. With that in mind, please call me out if you think that this is all age appropriate and NBD, because that’s a-ok, too. I just really don’t have any clue.

Looking for podcast recommendations! I’m going on a little road trip with my 8-year-old this weekend and I’d love to find something we would both enjoy. No sports, but other than that anything goes.
