I need help coming up with a graduation present for my nephew: 5th grade, 11 years old, into nerf and fortnite but his parents don’t want any more of that. I can’t really get a handle on whether he would like something formula one branded. I want to get him something to mark the occasion. What are the 11 year old boys into?
Considering the Big Home Reno and looking for advice.
Because life isn’t what one expects, we bought a house with three bedrooms + an office (technically a bedroom but not really). We ended up with a mix of genders and ages that mean we will either have a 16 year old with an 8 year old sharing a room or be putting somebody in the office or basement.
We’ve been floating doing The Big Reno. Basically, we would remove the existing garage, change the kitchen to be more functional and add a first floor laundry room and another bedroom over the garage space. Kitchen and dining room would be opened up – right now we have a sort of L shaped Galley-ish kitchen which is great for one person, but absolutely zero use for when people come over… we would remove a wall between the kitchen and dining room and change the layout so that it is more conducive to the way people want to hang out when they come over.
Our house is in the absolute perfect location. House is worth about $600k-ish, we owe $200k with a very low interest rate. We’re in the high-demand old suburb and to buy another house to meet our needs would be $800K or more. Financially, we’re in good shape with the numbers… but also it’s SO MUCH and I keep asking ‘well, can’t we just deal?’
I love a bronzer! Haven’t tried this one, but shout out to the Bobbi Brown shimmer brick if you’re looking for other options.
I just picked up a mini Fenty diamond bomb in this last Sephora sale in more of a silver shimmer (I saw it one someone else, loved how they looked, and asked) and have been LOVING it. I’m usually more into golds/warm tones so it’s a fun change.
My 8 year old’s dance recital is this weekend and it’s looking like it will be her last one after 5 years of dance, and I’m in my feelings about it. She loves softball, which is also a spring sport and increasingly hard to juggle with dance, especially next year when she’ll move up to 10U and games will become farther away at unpredictable times. And she wants to try out for her school’s basketball league, and softball and basketball don’t overlap with each other but both overlap with dance. She’s also progressing faster in the ball sports than dance, whether due to more natural ability or better quality instruction or both. So it makes a lot of sense, but still feels like the end of an era.
(Mostly) a scream into the void: DH, LO, and I are sick for the second time in a row since LO started daycare last month. We had 1 blissful day where everyone was healthy before the second virus hit.
My elderly mother, who does not drive, lives 2 hours away (one way), and cannot lift LO, is calling me every day offering to take the baby for a week (!) so DH and I can rest. If you think she’s being nice then I am happy for you that you don’t know people like my mother; it’s not nice, it’s not a genuine offer, it’s a way of telling me I’m failing. I’ve asked her to stop. She insists she’s just trying to help.
So out of curiosity as much as frustration, I asked her what she plans to feed the baby, who is well into purées and starting chunkier purées/soft foods. She says oh no she’s not going to cook for the baby (like I do). Ok then does the baby not need to eat for a week??? Just admit there is no plan because you know it’s not going to happen and stfu about it already! Harumph.
Does anyone have a tin can phone and can weigh in on pros and cons? A bunch of my kid’s friends just got them so thinking of getting one.
I would love anyone’s success stories of managing tough/negative emotions over a short period of time. I know and will be employing all the various strategies to manage the emotions, so don’t really need suggestions there, but I’d love to hear your success stories of getting through a period of a month or two where you are involved in a situation you cannot avoid, but will bring up somewhat ugly and tough emotions. Think envy and some anger.
Best examples I can think of would be a less qualified co-worker who plays politics at work being selected to give a major presentation over you, but you have to work with them to get the presentation ready but the coworker will get the credit at the end of it, or less qualified kids getting selected over your kid to represent a team bc their parents played politics during the selection process, but your kid is an alternate, so will need to be at all the practices/matches.
Suggestions about changing the situation or why it’s not a negative thing aren’t really helpful — there isn’t anything I’m able or willing to do to change the situation at this point and the emotions are there, but being managed in therapy — but I’d love to hear how you pushed through something similar while managing your own tough emotions and were better/stronger/more resilient or at least through it on the other side.
Houston area mom- how was the pool party? It ended up feeling fairly warm in the sun by the end of the day
We’re hosting a small birthday party at a local park for my toddler, basically just us, bio parents, bio siblings, and a couple friends. The plan is 10-12 since one bio sib needs to leave at 11. If everyone was local I wouldn’t worry about providing lunch in that time frame, but some of the bio family lives 1.5 hours away.
Is the best lunch option to just order pizza delivery to the park or is there some non-pizza option I’m not thinking of?
Where do your kids sit and do their homework? My kids are in 3rd and 6th grades. Each kid has at least 20minutes of homework each night, 6th grader’s is on a computer and 3rd grader’s is on paper. They have their own rooms with desks, but prefer to do their work at the dinner table. Our dining area is open to our kitchen and small living room. Larger projects are done downstairs in the basement. I really would like a dedicated space for each kid to do their work. I have fond memories of my childhood desk and organizing the drawers and post-its. But, my kids like being at the dining table. On one hand, I love this because we are together and we don’t want computers in their bedrooms. On the other hand, I wonder if they would be a little more organized if they had a more dedicated space to work. I also fear that we would spend a lot of money creating the perfect set up and the kids would still work at the dining table. Thanks for reading, just typing this out is helpful.
