I know it’s universally regarded as the Worst Month but can I just say how much I love January as a parent of school age kids. School is in session and kids are in their routines, but most activities don’t start until the end of the month and I just love having a chill month where we’re not rushing anywhere.

I’m going to ask the pediatrician but I think I already know what they’re going to say. My 6 month old baby has decided he really likes sleeping on his side. I put him in his crib on his back, but he immediately rolls onto his side. I worry about his neck being unsupported all night. I know you’re not supposed to give them pillows until they’re at least 2. Is there some other option to support his neck when he’s side lying?

We’re headed on a Disney cruise out of Ft Lauderdale in late April and need a Marriott hotel for the one night before departure (a very busy Sunday night, it would seem). We’ve vacationed at the Marriott Harbor Beach, but those rooms are bananas expensive, presumably due to cruise demand/departures and proximity. Given the one night, it’s not worth it to us.

Any recs? It has to be Bonvoy as we have a ton of points and would love the free room. 2 kids (7 and 2) and 2 adults. We land at 3 so best case we’re at the hotel by 4. I envision maybeeee a quick pool dip if warm enough, dinner and then trying to get two very excited kids to bed, but that’s about it. We’ll want a good breakfast in the morning.

Does anyone have a strong opinion about Bonvoy options? The Westin and W are within our points range and look updated enough but pictures can be deceiving. Also, should we be staying closer to the actual cruise terminal? We are not “cruisers”….

Has anyone taken their kids to Scandanavia and can share any tips or a sample itinerary? I used chatgpt and came up with a Stockholm-Copehnhagen-Lofoten Islands itinerary but I am wondering if I should get a real travel agent. We are kind of celebrating entering the big(ish)-kid stage this summer and want to do a real trip for the first time. We basically have done visits to grandparents for the last 8 years and now our kids are going to be 8 and 5 and I AM. SO. EXCITED.

I know it’s a long way away, but I’m cold and want to vacation plan in my head. Anyone have any suggestions for October break with an 8 year old? I don’t want to go to the beach and we regularly visit family in several of the bigger US cities. No Disney, we’ve done a lot of that lately. I think maybe I’m looking for a resort in a scenic countryside or mountain area with great food either on site or a short drive away, fun activities for school age kids (horses would be super fun for my daughter), and ideally a spa. Blackberry Farm looks awesome but it’s $3k a night for our dates and LOL that is not in my budget. I like nice hotels but not *that* nice. Is there anything similar at a significantly lower price point?

I’m thinking of moving my daughter away from her neighborhood school to another public or charter option. Her kindergarten experience has been pretty problematic largely, I think, due to her very rigid and old school teacher. But in general, I haven’t been impressed with the school or the worksheet-based curriculum and I’ve heard very good things about some of the alternative options as places where the school is good at injecting a little more joy into learning. I have a super active and inquisitive kid and I think it’s hard for her to be expected to sit still and fill in blanks all day.

Has anyone done this? Did you regret losing the neighborhood school experience ?

My pre-K daughter is going through a phase where she is afraid of every new activity/ experience and completely shuts down. She wouldn’t even put on her uniform for soccer in the fall. Despite cruising around the pool pretty well on swimmies over the summer, she has been sometimes even refusing to get in the water at the swim lessons we signed her up for this winter. We tried a couple ski lessons at a local mountain over break, and she clung to me the whole time and basically didn’t participate at all unless I was holding her (super fun). She just screams about “can’t can’t can’t” and does this whole damsel in distress act, like she was somehow born to play the princess in “Enchanted”. I’m kind of at a loss. I know from experience that she learns to love things once she’s comfortable, so I’m trying to stick with it when we think it’s a valuable skill/ class/ activity. But the fact that every single thing is a battle is wearing me down. Do we take a break? Ride it out and hope she matures? I would not call her overscheduled, so I don’t think that’s the issue. We don’t do more than a one or two activities at a time.

parents of older kids, how do you talk to your kids about “popularity” at school? my son is newly aware of the existence of popular and unpopular kids in his grade and talks about it a lot and I’m never sure how to respond (if at all); it seems to stress him out that he doesn’t sit at the popular kids lunch table for example (though he has friends and it’s not like a bullying situation).

Why tf do cheap construction baby shoes cost $60+? What a racket. Anyone have a promo code for any halfway decent brand of early walker shoes to share?

My baby really does best with two naps (14 months old) and is being put on the one-nap schedule at daycare. I think he’ll be ok but my question is whether we should switch to one nap at home too. Can’t decide if we should be consistent versus giving him a chance to catch up on sleep.

How did everyone settle in for the first day back? Breakfast club got cancelled yesterday, so my husband let my son and I sleep in. After school, I did an impromptu “art club” with my son and his pal at the library – I brought a bunch of art supplies and they drew and chatted while I worked. I could get used to this sabbatical / no teaching schedule.
