A small, yellow, soft tote bag sitting next to three skincare products. The tote has the text "Sincerely Yours," and the image has an orange circle at the top with the text "viral bestseller."

My oldest has been working on her Christmas wish list since September. At the top is skincare from Sincerely Yours.

This tween-friendly skincare brand is free of harsh ingredients like alcohols, retinols, and unpronounceable chemicals. This sampler set in the tradition of Clinique’s 3-step kit includes a hydrating cleanser, soothing serum mist, and daily moisturizer. It all comes in a cute reusable travel bag.

The Fresh Starter Set is $44.

My neurodivergent kid has some major stress and emotional outbursts; I’m hoping play therapy and eventually talk therapy will help. But we live in an underserved area–there were only two local therapists who work for the same provider. Insurance won’t cover them, because apparently they don’t have adequate credentials. Insurance says there’s one therapist 30 miles away who would be covered, but she doesn’t work with little kids.

Does anyone have advice on how to apply pressure to the insurance company? The difference between $20 copay vs $260 out of pocket, every week or two, is big enough to determine whether or not kid gets the therapy he needs.

Mascara recommendation for a an 11 year old? DD has been wearing petite and pretty but wants to try something else. She has pretty sensitive skin and I’m so worried about her cheap mascara leading to a reaction.

PSA: Once Upon a Farm tractor wheels and bars are getting recalled for choking hazard in toddlers. Apparently they can form a sticky mass that is near-impossible to dislodge. They were a regular staple in our house and they’re sold all over the place so thought I’d mention here. Really relieved nothing ever happened for us – choking is a fear of mine.

Moms of older girls: when do you start taking your daughter to see a gynecologist? I meant to ask at our last pediatrician appointment and forgot. Since then DD has started menstruating.

For those of you who use retinol/trentinoin for anti-aging, is there a point at which your skin stops flaking or is that a constant side effect?

I started using prescription strength ointment about 6 months ago. I only use it a few times a week, a tiny, smaller than pea size amount with moisturizer before and after. My skin looks brighter (sun spots fading) but the flakiness seems like trading one problem for another. Will this eventually go away or am I using too much/ too little?

This is sad, but I have been waiting for things to get better, and I just do not think my relationship with my husband will ever get better. Nothing abusive, but terible, long-standing tension and constant friction that is starting to permeate everything. I am trying to do the right thing. My child matter the most to me.

I truly don’t see things getting better. Getting a divorce, however, seems incredible – as in, I cannot believe I could actually do that. I am worried about my child living with miserable parents where it is not possible to hide our lack of regard for each other and I am worried about my child living with divorced parents.

Do you have any thoughts, advice, experiences to share as I try to decide what the right thing to do for my child and me is?

Did any of our resident adventure moms see Everest: The Other Side yesterday? There’s a link to a good article about it in the weekend roundup post. I have complicated feelings on the subject of truly risky adventure and motherhood, more so now that I’m actually a mom, and I’ve admired Hilaree Nelson for close to two decades. I think most people out there will absolutely never understand why she and the others continued to do this with families at home – I think most people don’t share the bizarre gene or whatever it is that drives these people, so it’s totally incomprehensible and absurd. I do understand it and I think taking risk risks is vital to my sense of self, but I’m satisfied with such a lesser level (in-bounds skiing, class IV rivers) that I find it hard to imagine wanting to go to such extremes while also balancing life at home. I get why the idea of the monotony of the home routine and a simple, ordinary life with zero intentional risk could cause someone to want to scream – I really do. But still! Would some middle ground between a couch life and Manaslu in avalanche conditions have satisfied Nelson? All the evidence suggests that she was an excellent mother, but there’s no doubt that her loss is devastating to her kids.
