Family Friday: Clue Junior

My youngest’s love of board games continues. He plays my old Clue game, but this junior version is probably more age-appropriate.
This two-in-one mystery game has two sides for two levels of play. The gameplay is familiar for anyone who’s played the original Clue, but features child-friendly mysteries (so no murder!), a school setting, and kid versions of the classic Clue characters.
In level one, for ages 4+, players work as a team to hunt for picture clues. In level two, for ages 5+, kids practice drawing conclusions to solve the mystery.
Clue Junior is under $20 at Amazon.

I can’t decide whether this is a problem or not. You know how sometimes you knee jerk just don’t like someone? Nothing you can put your finger on, you just don’t like them. When I was younger, I used to fight against that urge. Give everyone the benefit of the doubt. But now in my 40s, I’m realizing that every time I’ve had that strong negative reaction to someone, they’ve turned out to be awful. As a result, I’m finding it harder to give people the benefit of the doubt. Is this trusting my gut or is it being unfairly judgmental?
FWIW I wouldn’t say I’m a great judge of character. Plenty of people turned out to be awful who I really liked or at least didn’t initially dislike! It’s pretty rare that I don’t like someone for no particular reason (and it’s usually a person that others like).
Have any of you asked for your kid’s teacher to be switched mid-year and how did that go? My 4 year old is having some behavioral challenges at school and it’s all I can think about today. Every kid ebs and flows, and this is a super active but otherwise happy 4 year old. Previously we’ve had pretty normal behavioral stuff, but this week it feels like we had one really bad day and then a day which would have probably been in the ‘neutral’ category if it hadn’t fallen on the heels of ‘very bad day’. Now we’ve got a teacher meeting and while we are actively doing all the things to help our kiddo reset, I can’t help thinking that we specifically requested a different teacher because we didn’t think that Assigned Teacher would be a fit for our kid.
This isn’t so much a ‘blame the teacher’ thing as I feel like he was kind of… set up for failure in a way? Our other two kids both had Teacher A for Pre-K and that classroom works really well for our kids (and we know this!). We had requested Teacher A and Teacher A actually thought kid was going to be in her class, but they ‘rebalanced’ last minute apparently and kid ended up being assigned to a lovely, very crafty and calm teacher. Would it be totally out of pocket for me to ask in the meeting if kid could switch teachers even though we’re partway through the year?
Let me also just say – kid TOTALLY needs to pull it together.
Anyone have any recommendations for parenting/motherhood books? I just finished an Angela Garbes book which was a pleasant read–I mostly read non-fiction and have to take breaks from constant depressing disasters.
SAH/part-time moms, please give me reassurance that it’s okay to give myself some “PT0” while the kids are at school. A few times a month I need to take a day to watch TV and do nothing, but then I feel guilty. And then when DH asks what I did on this kind of day, I don’t want to tell him that I didn’t do anything really…
We’re likely saying goodbye to our long beloved/bemoaned family cat today. He’s a rescue, reached a ripe old age, and I think keeping him going has turned from compassion to selfishness on our part, as his breathing is impaired. We’re all surprised how sad I am, since I’ve long proposed selling him to a travelling circus as the loudest cat in existence.
What’s making you happy lately?
For me, it’s virtual runDisney challenges. I just finished the Halloween challenge yesterday with a 6 mile run, the longest I’ve done in over a decade. I am totally motivated by the over the top medals and the playlists. It also feels really good to set goals and accomplish them, because I’m not usually goal oriented. I’m slow as molasses (in fact DD9 pointed out that my 6 mile time was the same as DH’s last half marathon time) but I’m out there, running just for me, and seeing the medals on my wall makes me smile.
