Accessory Tuesday: Deco Birthstone Necklace

A gold chain with gold pendant. The rectangular pendant holds a white opal.

I love wearing jewelry that reflects my family — think pendants with everyone’s initials, or a locket with my kids’ photos. Next on my list is a birthstone necklace.

This version features a modern, emerald-cut pendant in the birthstone of your choice. Made from 18k gold plated, recycled sterling silver, the 16” to 18” chain works with a variety of necklines.

Edge of Ember’s Deco Birthstone Necklace is $230 at Nordstrom.

My school pet peeve of the day – why do they tell you the day before that tomorrow your kid must wear X for a performance? the performance was not planned today. how can i teach my kids executive functioning skills when the schools dont have any.

Are the KiwiCo advent calendars worth it for a 5 year old crafter? We did a felt ornament sticker one last year and that was a big hit, so I want to do something again, but these are a step up in terms of price and complexity.

Inspired by below: how much homework do your kids regularly have? For us in TX public school: none until 4th grade. So far this year it’s been minimal: about 30 minutes of math practice or reinforcing grammar concepts.

Reminded by the multivitamin post below, our pediatrician recommended magnesium glycinate rather than melatonin for my kid at bedtime. Do any of you use this? I’m trying not to buy from an unknown brand on amazon. But it also needs to taste okay to her!

What are some ways you’ve kept your marriage solid through the baby/toddler years? It’s tough to give our relationship enough energy right now, but I’m realizing it’s getting pushed a little too far off the back burner.

Does anyone else’s kid get caught up in “who’s trick-or-treating with whom” drama? I feel like my daughter doesn’t have that much friend drama in general, but something about this holiday always sets it off. She accepted an offer to trick or treat with Friend A a few weeks ago and was really happy and excited about it, but then Friend B, who she’s closer to, just asked her to trick or treat. For various reasons the two friends do not mesh so hosting both isn’t an option and we’re obviously not letting her bail on Friend A. She was very upset and whining about how she never would have accepted Friend A’s invite if she knew Friend B was an option and it’s like girl you could have thought of this in advance and talked to Friend B about her plans before saying yes to Friend A. I know she was just venting to us and will behave appropriately with Friend A on the actual night, but ugh the drama!

Where do you get your info about supporting autistic kids? I have a pretty thorough filter for reading parenting books, but I usually default to Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins for medical stuff. But autism includes both aspects, and it has attracted the worst kinds of quacks.

Curious for those of you in private schools how much say you expect to have over policies.

My daughter – first grade – is in a small private school. I like an awful lot of things about it. But I feel like the homework is out of control. It’s partly my daughter’s temperament – she’s not a worksheet kid and getting her to do them is a fight every single night. But I also just feel there’s too much for this age.

My solution had been to not finish it if it was too much. But I just found out they make her stay in during morning recess to finish if she didn’t the night before. I’m totally against this – I think it goes against all the research about what kids need to regulate and focus in school. I am not sure how to handle it though. What would you do? Or
Is this just the price of things I like about the school?

Wondering if my expectations are off – I e-mailed my kiddo’s school administration yesterday morning asking a non-urgent question (sports/extracurricular adjacent, not a coach question, definitely something to ask an admin about). Would you be a little annoyed that there’s been no response yet, not even an “looking into it, we’ll get back to you soon”? I’m a fairly quick e-mail responder so that may be throwing me off.

My dad wants to do a big family trip over the 2027 December holidays, it would be 5 adults and 2 kids (ages 3 and 8) total. Several of the adults are very particular about having their own bedrooms, so we’d want a 4 bedroom place or 2 2-bed units. He suggested renting 2 cottages in Maui. My initial reaction was that if we were going to be making that trek (from the East coast) I’d prefer to be at a resort so we can get breakfast and go to the pool/beach without having to drive, and I’d kind of like to save Hawaii for when my kids are a little older and can appreciate it. I also understand the social reasons not to rent houses in Maui so there’s that angle. My questions are (1) do you have any suggestions for intergenerational-friendly, warm in December, places where we can get a place with lots of bedrooms, and (2) how do I make the suggestion without sounding bratty or ungrateful for my dad’s offer to organize?

This feels harder than it should — I cannot find a teen multi-vitamin that comes in capsule form. Not a gummy, not a powder or chewable, just a good old multivitamin. Suggestions? I thought about just giving her an adult multi, but I’m getting tripped up by reading the 18+ I keep seeing on labels. Editing to add that I don’t want to get anything from an indirect seller, like Amazon – I’d prefer to get direct from the manufacturer.

Has anyone’s kids had what seemed like a run of the mill stomach virus (vomiting three times in an hour, diarrhea the next day, then resolved and back to his normal self) but then followed by an instance of throwing up again several days later? We’re going to call the doctor when they open of course but this seems like a weird progression to me. He’s in daycare and they haven’t said anything about norovirus going around.
