Any suggestions for pants for a 10-year-old girl that aren’t blue jeans? She wants soft pants and often wears yoga pants or leggings, but these aren’t necessarily as fashionable as she’d like as a fifth grader.

She wears a size 10-12.

I know there have been a few threads here recently about math enrichment so just wanted to share that my 3rd grader who really loves math and is above grade level is working through the Spectrum math workbooks and really enjoying them. They’re pretty comprehensive and cover all the topics you’re supposed to learn in the grade so I think they could also work for remediation or filling in any gaps that exist. In theory, I like the more creative approach of Beast Academy, especially for enrichment, but my daughter has been working much more independently with the Spectrum books.

Hi hive – let me know if I’m missing anything. 3rd grader started at a new, private school this year. He’s doing great academically, has friends, teachers love him. I think its overall a better fit than his previous school.

Its come to our attention that he is still figuring out where he fits in (reasonable because its been 2 months) and who his “real” friends – e.g. the ones that he can have deeper connections with – are. Of course he had a few boys that were his people at his old school – he was there for 3 years! We’re not there yet here. I’m working on setting 1/1 playdates with kids he’s expressed interest in, we’re sharing a journal back and forth where he can discuss his feelings, etc. Yesterday he started crying before his shower because he felt lonely at school sometimes. He’s just a sensitive guy with big feelings, and is easily liked by many and he prefers to have his 2-3 close friends.

Again, I know from observation and from his teachers that plenty of the kids there like him, are excited to be his friend, and that these deeper connections just take time. We’ve also had things the last 3 weekends that have kept him away from the usual sports where he’d see his classmates outside of school and bond.

Anything else I can be doing? I think this is a time (ugh) and listening thing more than anything.

Are your pediatricians recommending whole or reduced fat milk for young toddlers (2-3 age)? Ours just recommended “switching to 1%” which we’re not going to do and which I thought most doctors had stopped saying.

DH is a great dad like 98 percent of the time. But my oldest is now in middle school and they will fight and he will lose his temper. This morning she was legitimately being terrible and he told her she was being a dumba**. I got super mad at him after she was at school, and I’m trying to decide if I overreacted. I’d say this sort of thing happens every couple months. They just push each other’s buttons a lot.

Am I overreacting? Underreacting? Maybe it’s worse because he’s not a habitual curser? He and she always apologize and make up, but I’d really like it to not happen at all. But then I feel like I’m parenting an extra kid and I don’t want to have that relationship either.

Really most interested in hearing from any of you with older kids. This would never ever have happened when they were younger and it certainly doesn’t happen with the younger ones still. There’s something different about arguing with a middle or high schooler.

FWIW I haven’t cursed at her but there are moments I really really don’t like her and I’ve come pretty close to saying it! I pivot to I don’t like this behavior, but i can definitely see where DH is coming with. We have four kids and she’s by far our hardest.

So in the past 6 months, I’ve totally overhauled my skincare and makeup… I was 100% wearing the same ‘millenial makeup’ that I had since probably 2009. If anyone is in the same boat, I just want to put a plug in for those Sephora Value kits. I bought one which was definitely a splurge… but the makeup in it is great and it’s getting me out of my ‘comfort zone’. Like, I’d never tried a liquid/cream eyeshadow… but it turns out that it looks fabulous on my 40 year old self. Similarly, I finally actually took a moment to adjust my skincare and honestly… I haven’t felt this good about how I look in a long while.

Just for fun, have there been any ‘life changing’ products that you’ve found that you’d like to share? Mine are the La Roche Posey Baume B5+ (the cream one) at night. Amazing, amazing for barrier repair. Similarly, the O/S setting spray helps me look good from morning until evening without breaking me out or feeling sticky or stiff.

I don’t think we have had a “what’s everyone being for Halloween” thread this year!! I love hearing about everyone’s costumes. I’ll start…

4yo: a turtle (not a ninja turtle, just a regular turtle. and I am very proud that I made her a turtle shell out of felt/stuffing…my first time doing a DIY costume in a decade of parenting)
8yo: a detective
10yo: ??? she and her friends are still working on a group costume

My 4 yo has a very active imagination and loves to tell stories. It’s usually cute and harmless – she saw a dino yesterday, she went swimming with the whales, she lives in a castle… but sometimes she says stuff like “[kid in preschool] is hitting me” and I genuinely can’t tell if this is a real issue I should address or if she is making it up. Any advice for introducing the whole “it’s ok to have an imaginary life but sometimes we need to tell the truth” concept at that age?

What’s your favorite toddler trick? This is my 3rd, but we have an age gap so I’m trying to remember my old favs. A few that have been great are saying “bye” to whatever we are leaving/transitioning, “catching” the sugar bunnies with the toothbrush when brushing teeth, and playing peekaboo to distract when trying to buckle toddler into the car seat. If you have/had a fav, please share!

My 3 yo DD had a meltdown at a friend’s birthday party this weekend, and I’m replaying it to understand how I should handle this differently.

Let’s call my daughter Anna. Background is there’s a girl in her class (Laura) with whom she does not gel. The girls used to play together and we even had a few playdates, but about a year and a half ago, her mom texted me that she was in their class earlier that day and witnessed “disturbing behavior” from my daughter and that Laura has been saying all week that she was afraid to go to school because of Anna. For background, they were just over 2 at the time. DD is very verbal and couldn’t even express that she would be afraid to go to school because of someone at that age, and I’m also not sure what qualifies as disturbing behavior for a 2 yo. Anyway, I took it seriously, have talked to my daughter, her teachers, and the admin at her preschool who all confirm that DD is nice to everyone and nothing is out of the ordinary.

A few months ago, got a similar text from the mom again. I talked to the teacher who said my daughter likes to take charge and is active and plays with the boys, but she isn’t mean to Laura and isn’t a bully. According to the other mom, my daughter is a huge bully and she’s complained about her to the teachers and the office. Teachers and the admin deny all of this to me, my daughter is fine, etc. Since then I’ve encouraged my daughter to play with other girls in class.

Fast forward to this past weekend, the birthday party of another girl in class. Everything was great for the first hour and a half, then Laura arrives. Kids are playing in a bounce house and on swings, and DH told me later that every few minutes Laura was coming up to her mom complaining about DD (I didn’t see this). Then, the birthday girl and Laura come up to me saying “Anna broke the bounce house”. I walked over, DD was crying and laying down in the bounce house, it was hard to get her out but we did and walked away to calm her down. Idk what went down with Laura and the bday girl and my daughter, but she was super distraught. Walk back to the group where cupcakes are being passed out and I confirmed with the host that the bounce house wasn’t damaged, DD had just been laying on it a certain way.

Then the host put all the cupcakes down on a table in front of the kids. DD grabbed one and the birthday girl cried that she wanted that one, so DH took it from DD and gave to bday girl. Another meltdown from DD, this one so bad that we left out the back door. DD was making a ton of noise screaming and not really making sense. The host came out, I apologized and said we’re leaving, host said its ok and tried to offer us a cupcake which I turned down. I told her DD and this other girl don’t always mesh well and I’m going to separate them. DD threw the biggest fit of her life refusing to get in her carseat in full view of the rest of the party. Then this morning was sad to go to school because she doesn’t want to see these girls.

Girls are going to be mean to DD and gang up on her, I get it, it just makes me sad. I’m also not sure what else I should be doing; DD is not emotionally regulating herself well either.
