While it still feels like summer, the evenings are slowly getting longer. If you want something new for fall but want to wear it now, consider this zip front jacket.

This jacket’s knitted texture reads fall, while the lightweight, cotton-blend fabric is still comfortable for late summer. Its light, dappled pattern works with everything from midi dresses to sleek trousers, making it an office staple.

Nic+Zoe’s Knit & Woven Zip Front Jacket is $198 at Nordstrom and comes in sizes XS-XXL.

Y’all, my 13 year old planned a golf outing with his 16-year-old friend. They scheduled a tee time, friend picked him up with his newish driver’s license, and they are off for the afternoon. This is the first time I have let my child ride with another child as the driver. I am simultaneously thrilled that nothing about this social outing – other than the other mom confirming it was ok for her son to drive mine – involved me, and flabbergasted that my kid is old enough to have friends who can drive. That is all.

Question for those of us who have gotten through the very little kid trenches – how much are you thinking about / actively planning for empty nester future. Now that my kids are getting older (one in middle school one in elementary) I find myself being like “wait, why do I live in this city? should I move? should I try to retire early? what do I want my life to look like once I’m not primarily a parent?” but my husband is not really someone who thinks ahead so I’m alone in this (and wondering if I’m crazy that I’m already thinking about life a decade-ish from now).

How do you do family trips with in laws when you don’t like your in laws? We are considering a weekend trip to New England with our 3 young kids.

He’d like to invite his mom and sister to come up with us. They are local, we see them all the time, kids like them. I really despise my narcissistic MAGA MIL. SIL is mostly ok.
She just has a very big personality that tends to overwhelm me.

On the one hand it would be nice to have extra eyes and hands, on the other hand it would be with people I don’t like. What would you do?

FWIW I would like to go on the trip, so staying home while they go wouldn’t be a good option for me (plus I’d miss the kids)

How do you recover emotionally after having an argument with your spouse? I’m also in prime-time PMS, so there’s that. I tend to be reactive and resentful, which makes everything worse. I’m working on it but would appreciate any practical tips beyond going to therapy. Note: We both shared apologies and made up.

I found out yesterday that my early pregnancy is not viable. Do you recommend telling my practice group leaders at work? i am a big law partner in a small group and know and trust these individuals. I am early along and they did not know I was expecting. I think the next week I will need to be taking time to address the medical side (which will require intervention) and I am also grieving.

DH has been on business travel for 3 weeks, and when he returns it’ll be a month. In that time I’ve been taking care of all the things, getting back to school ready for kids, working, etc.

DH lost a parent earlier this year and its been hard on all of us, but especially him (of course). When we spoke this morning he was like “Man, I really need a break badly”. As part of his coping with the loss, he’s definitely been working more intensely (his work has also ramped up directly due to current admin).

It’s SO hard for me to be like THEN WHY DONT YOU TAKE ONE? It’s gotten to the point where it’s like you keep talking about wanting to do X, and not doing X, and then you’re just burned out/not pleasant to be around and then I have to hold more together. I know this sounds super selfish! But I’ve been/and plant o continue to be very supportive and have taken on more, give him space to process, etc. while he mourns this huge loss in his life.

I posted a few weeks ago, about this, and got some great empathy/ideas, and have been definitely taking time for myself, activating all the help, etc. so I’m tired but not burned out, and am actually going away for the weekend soon. I’m just like okay, you keep making X choice and nothing changes and you complain about it, yet change nothing.

Is there a good way for me to respond? I’m thinking an honest conversation when he’s back and decompressed a bit, but anything else?

We were waffling on enrolling our 4 year old in universal Pre-K this year for a host of reasons, but decided to go for it. He’s loving it! One of my major motivations was to make some more neighborhood parent friends – our current circle is great, but based around the church my husband and I grew up in, which is all the way across town. My husband is handling pick-up and drop-off, and is not the most social animal – any tips I could pass along for sparking some connection? I know he feels a little awkward being the only dad routinely doing the school run.

What would you buy for a mom of your kids friend who is having her fourth (and unexpected) kid? There’s no registry. We are friendly and probably hang out socially about once a week while our kids play. She said something about how she donated basically everything from her 1 year old daughter because she wasn’t planning for another.
She tends to dress more fashionably than I do so I’m feeling a little self conscious about picking out onesies but I feel like with a one year old she probably still has a lot of functional stuff for bath and burp cloths, etc.

I just want to make a petty vent. My kid starts kindergarten next week. At our school, their K teacher is supposed to reach out to the parents early this week to share information about what to expect and what supplies the kids need to bring. All the other new K parents I know heard from their teachers on Monday, but I still haven’t heard anything. I know it’s not a big deal in the grand scheme, but I just want to be able to get my kid prepared for what to expect and can’t even tell them who their teacher is yet. Although I have a good idea who it is, because I’m heard about all but one of the teachers making the calls.

To the mom yesterday I’m so sorry that your kiddo is struggling, but I’m really very curious as to how many boys are we talking who are sitting around at lunch obsessed with frogs? I realize it doesn’t help your kid but in this day and age when kids are exposed to so much it’s nice to hear that some have a fairly innocent interest that doesn’t involve video games
