A palette of translucent pressed powder

I’m feeling a wave of nostalgia right now —  I just discovered you can still buy my first pressed powder!

This easy-to-use palette has a combination of colors to enhance skin tone and blur imperfections without feeling heavy. Now that my skin is more middle-aged than teenaged, I would also use it as a setting powder over foundation.

Physicians Formula’s Powder Palette is $12.99 at Target.

In the “summer slide prevention tools that actually work” bucket, I have a suggestion that is working:

I bought a stack of books for my rising first graders, and put them on our breakfast counter. After a great deal of negotiation, they have agreed to read one sentence out loud per day this summer. It is SUCH a digestible amount of reading that it feels like no lift at all. It’s super easy to pick up a book and fire off the sentence, and 9 times out of 10, they keep going to read the next page (and so on and so on). But if they only read one sentence, that’s fine, they still did exactly what they were asked to do. They have never fought me on it because it such a small amount of work.

Three weeks in, and my sweet son who really struggled with reading told me this morning that he was so proud of himself bc he didn’t have to sound out any words on the page he was reading. It’s the first time he could just…read the words, and it came easy to him.

My heart is soaring :)

Any band camp parents with any advice or tips? Kiddo is joining for this season and it’s a lot more intense than I realized.

I’m in search of a swim tankini that could also be worn as a tank/cami on casual days in Europe. Relatively small chested – built-in is a must, but does not have to be underwire. Thanks!

Anyone done the 1,000 hours outside challenge? I’m intrigued and think it could be nice to have a target/goal – someone I know said that even though her family “failed” to reach 1000 hours, they still increased their time outside by a massive margin and it felt like a win. My little guy does not get enough outside time by any means, but we recently moved to a new area where the opportunities have greatly improved – our old place had no yard/patio and was on a very busy street with no nearby parks. Now we have a park half a block away.

I just bought some Banana Boat kids sunscreen online and realized after it shipped that it’s a mineral formula. I’m not against chemical sunscreen and it’s actually what we normally use. We send our toddler to daycare with a coat of sunscreen in the morning. Before afternoon playtime, her daycare applies more. They use chemical.

Is the morning application of mineral sunscreen going to mess with the afternoon chemical layer applied at daycare? As in, do I need to now return this mineral sunscreen? Blerg.

We’re moving locally next week with one toddler. God willing, he’ll be at daycare like normal on the day off. Any tips for me for getting things ready for him? I’ll obviously prioritize getting the crib set up with his stuffed animals, etc. and I think I’ll need to find a spare curtain rod and go early to set up the blackout curtain. Otherwise, I’m thinking I should have a bag with his dinner supplies/milk cup/etc handy and ready to go. What was helpful for you in any similar moves?

Feeling the biological penalty of being a woman extra today and want to vent about it. I am trying to build my practice as an appellate attorney. I have two appeals pending right now in a federal appeals court and state supreme court. The more senior attorneys on both files were going to give me the opportunity to argue, but now both cases have been set for argument a month after I am due to give birth. I am planning to breastfeed and am not going to be in a place where I can competently prep for and present arguments at that point. I am so, so mad/sad about these lost opportunities, particularly the federal case. It doesn’t help that my husband just started a new job that is going to set him up for his dream opportunities/job options. I know family is more important that work and I will choose it every time but I really wanted this!

Our library summer reading is set up so that the kids get a free book and a raffle ticket every time they read 8 books. My kids are still reading books like “Little Blue Truck” and “Goodnight Moon”.

I’m overthinking this, because the librarians have been very clear that they don’t care as long as kids are reading. But I also know I’m setting precedent for future years. The raffle prizes are cool enough to be highly motivating, but I’d like to make sure my kids are actually earning their tickets.

Yet another road trip thread! Leaving on Wednesday morning — 12 hours each way. We’re splitting up the trip on the way there and doing it in one shot on the way back. Kids are 4, 8, 10. Big innovation this time: we got an iPad with a mount so all three kids can watch a movie at once. Tentative plan is to intersperse movies with 45 minutes of reading/playing/audiobooks. iPad is for movies only (no games, no individual use) and we have already confirmed that everyone can see it from their seats. I’ve downloaded a bunch of movies that all three kids agree on.

First — for those of you who have done trips with movies before, does this plan sound reasonable?

Second — what have people had success with recently in terms of non-screen road trip entertainment? I have lots of books/graphic novels/coloring/etc. For audiobooks I was thinking the Ramona books (big kids have read them but I think they’d be fine with a re-listen). Do any of you have recommendations for good fairy tale retellings, especially funny ones? I feel like all three kids would like that. Other recs?

P.S. we cleaned out the minivan in preparation for the trip and I found NINE individual winter gloves in there. Plus a horrifying amount of crumbs, including one entire uneaten cookie. Ew.

My daughter started a new sport with a few friends, and she seems to really enjoy it- like smiles while competing. BUT one of her “friends” who is a bit of a frenemy, also does the sport and is better than my daughter, and seems really determined to make sure my daughter knows that. I’ve talked to my daughter about how your friends should make you feel good, not bad, and she seems to be doing ok ignoring her and shaking it off, but I’m bummed because it’s a small group and they really have no choice to interact. Good life lesson I guess but hard to watch!

A minor gripe that I need to get off my chest. We spent a decent amount of money to send our high school kid to a camp at a nearby university. The camp is an intensive clinic that is related to a school activity he’s in (a music ensemble). Said camp draws in people locally and from neighboring states. One of the reasons to go to this camp is to get a chance to work with new clinicians, get feedback from an unbiased source, etc. He texted me this morning to let me know his small group leader is his high school teacher/director. I respect this person, but seriously?! On one hand, this is a person who my kid needs to have a good relationship with and impress. Kid has been sort of bent out shape about some of the director’s choices over the past year and was really looking forward to the experience of working with other clinicians. Oh well. Nothing to be done, and I know he’ll have a good time anyway, but it’s a little annoying.
