My kindergartener’s teacher just emailed me to say that she recommends my kid join the afterschool “reading club,” i.e., reading tutoring with a teacher. I’m a bit baffled, especially since he generally loves books and being read to, and this is not a high-achiever type school. My kid knows his letters, which is about all I thought he was supposed to know going into kindergarten? He is quite novice at writing his letters, probably below K-level. Obviously I’ll follow up with the teacher, but I’m curious if anyone has experience with something similar?
If you’re going somewhere fun for fall break, tell me about it, so I can live vicariously through you?
I canceled two planned trips. The first one because I was trying to be fiscally responsible and rein in spending and the second, local-ish one because a major part of it was a national park site that’s closed due to the shutdown. I know it’s a first world problem and trivial compared to all the people whose livelihoods are impacted by the shutdown, but I’m still disappointed.
Anyone have any kids outerwear from Reima? Thoughts on quality? We need a few pieces for the snow and I see they also have rain gear, which would be useful too. Willing to spend for quality.
I need some weekday dinner help. One night a week, one parent takes DD10 to practice from 5:30-7:15 or 7:30. The other parent stays home with DD8. We’re stuck as to how to feed everyone. It’s hard to get a good dinner in DD10 before sports (and she doesn’t want a heavy stomach) and parents don’t want to eat or aren’t home yet to prepare a meal at 5. But both kids are starving at 7:30, so waiting for everyone to eat together is unpleasant.
Should we try a heavy snack for both kids before sports and the parent who stays home prepares the meal for 7:30 for everyone? Should we eat in shifts and the parent who stays home prepares 2 meals (one for 6:30 and one for 7:30)? If so, any ideas on what keeps well for an hour?
Any suggestions? I feel like two competent adults should be able to figure this out but it has taken on outsize proportions of ugh in our family.
I would like to get my 2-year daughter a toy train for Christmas. Any recommendations for brands that are good? Does anyone have a personalized name train that actually works as a toy too?
I am looking for a not-“sexy” cat costume for myself that is also not super baggy. Does that exist?
My toddler will be a cat and we want to be a cat family, but I am having trouble finding a cat costume for myself that is both appropriate abd not a giant sack. Any ideas?
My 3 year old daughter told me she has been having problems with her friend at school. From what I’ve gleaned her friend called another friend “fat” and her friend also hit another friend really hard (like bad enough this friend ended up in the school admin’s office). My daughter also told me this friend has called her names. I understand to some degree this is part of having a 3 year old…but is this kind of crazy early to be experiencing this type of behavior? My daughter and I had a talk about how it’s not nice to hit or call names, etc… and if her friend does that to her then she should play with other friends (she does have lots of other friends in her classroom). School also has done a good job of addressing the behavior, however, this all seems so early to me!! Maybe not.
When does my baby need to wear shoes? She’s 11 months and cruising around on furniture in our house, wears grippy socks at daycare but we haven’t bought any shoes yet.
My two preschoolers (3, 5) share a bedroom. Bedtime is 7:30 and they’re usually asleep by 7:45 or 8. The younger one naps during the day and has higher sleep needs in general than the 5 year old, who is an early bird. We implemented a green light at 6:15am morning system for him as a toddler and he still needs it – he will often wake up before the light and lately has no qualms about waking the whole house up, including younger sibling, by loudly going to the bathroom and turning on lights. Do I implement consequences? Or tell him if he can be quiet he can go wait in the living room? What else can I do? I usually am showering and getting ready for work. We’ve also found that he will get up earlier and earlier if we let him.
