I’m loving all the lightweight spring sweaters I see everywhere, like this polo sweater from Ann Taylor.

This sweater is a bit more interesting than your typical polo sweater — the pointelle pattern and bold gold buttons make it special. The V-neck looks a little deep, so I’d wear it with a tank or cami. Add a polished jacket and slacks for a relaxed office outfit.

This sweater is $84.50 at Ann Taylor and comes in sizes XXS-XXL as well as petites. It’s available in three colors, including “potpourri” (pictured).

Is the Solid Starts app worth it? What do I need to know that their website doesn’t already tell me? Thanks!

Do you step away from volunteer responsibilities like board appointments during your maternity leave? For the entirety of your leave or part of it? I’ve mentioned my pregnancy to all of my volunteer organizations but I’m starting to get the sense that they think I’ll be available at least remotely. I have 20 weeks through work; baby won’t be in daycare until after leave and I don’t have any other childcare. I want to make sure it’s not unreasonable to expect that I won’t have volunteer responsibilities while I’m on maternity leave. What’s typical? Thanks!

Anyone here have a LQBTQ child? My 16 y.o. son recently came out to us. We knew this was coming (saw some texts) and he is already out at school. We fully support him: told him we love him, we’re so glad he told us, he’s still the same person, we’re here to support him, etc. He insists this is not that big of a deal (“it’s 2025, mom”) and doesn’t really want to talk about it. Honestly he seems completely fine, which is great. My brother (who is also gay) has also been in contact with my son to offer support. I’m wondering what if anything else we should be doing?

Why do schools bury the salient information for parents in hard-to-find places on the website? I would just like the phone number and start/end times on the landing page and not on page 18 of a 45 page parent handbook, which requires cross referencing three different places to understand what the times are for early release, late start, or delayed openings. Our schools are divided so that kids change schools every 2-3 years, and the start times adjust by inconsistent increments with each change. Middle school starts at 7:37, upper elementary starts at 8:43, and lower elementary starts at 8:24. Today is an early release, and I honestly have no idea what time to expect my kids to walk through the door.

Is anyone here in academia and, if so, do you have child care for your kiddos during the summer? I made a recent career change so this is new to me. I really need to be doing research / writing this summer, so I’m planning on full-time care and pulling them out early some days etc. But I’m having a fair amount of guilt about it.

Maybe a fun question…in two weeks we are doing a Big Makeover of the kids’ rooms…the 3yo is moving in with the 7yo and the 9yo is getting her own room (the one where the toddler currently sleeps). My husband and I have set aside the whole day while they are at school to do all the work (put together a new bed and bookshelf, hang pictures, move furniture, etc) so they can come home and be surprised (they know the move is coming but not all the “extras”). The kids have already picked out pictures for their walls.

Any other fun (and preferably cheap) ideas for decor/furniture/etc your kids love in their rooms?

I’m so happy to be doing this…I am VERY much not a “decoratey” person (the kids currently have zero pictures on their walls and only the barest, most functional furniture) but I think it’s time for them to have spaces they really love.

My 4-year-old daughter has curly/wavy hair that seems like it’s here to stay, unlike my oldest who grew out of it. I have wavy hair myself, but I usually blow dry it straight, so I’m not very familiar with curly hair maintenance. I’ve watched a few YouTube videos about kids with curly hair, but many of the routines these mom went through are a bit overwhelming to me. What are some practical products and tips for managing curly hair in young kids without spending a ton of time?

I often buy small toys when they are on a great sale (Prime day, etc) and then let my kids shop my closet when a party comes up. Lots of Lego sets and sticker books.

For boys up to about age 6/7 my go to is a 5-pack of hot wheels cars or a 2-pack of hot wheels monster trucks. They are universally a hit. I’ll often pair that with an Usborne “Build Your Own…” sticker book. After about age 7 they develop more individual interests so I will have them think through what that friend would like and choose something special.

ETA: meant for the post below, obviously!

Do you have a go-to birthday party gift? We had a friends kid birthday party completely sneak up on us last weekend and had to make do with a CVS gift on the way to the party. It was fine, but it def made us late and made me stressed. I’ve since bought a couple copies of my daughter’s favorite book about dragons/unicorns, and thought I’d give that with a stuffed animal version of either a dragon or unicorn. But I’m curious what others do! Kids are 4 and 7, but of course we go to a wide age range of parties and baby showers.
