I think there are a few here who’ve taken kids to Amsterdam. Do you think it’s a good city to do with an 8 year old? Or is it best to wait a few more years until they can better appreciate museums?
Might ask for more responses on Monday, but re: extended family vacations, am interested in a range of opinions on pushing back on terrible vacation ideas. My ILs want to do a big week vacation next summer and my husband and I both hate the idea of staying in a house, cooking, cleaning, etc. Everyone has weird dietary restrictions, very few help with the chores, as we have learned from past vacations like this with them. I really really really don’t want to just suck it up and do it, but should we? Also doesn’t help that we are both in DC and generally pretty miserable right now with everything going on in our jobs.
Any gift suggestions for girls who are 6 going on 11? My daughter has a friend(ish… they’re drifting, due to the vastly differing interests) who is turning 7 next month and seems more like a tween than a little kid. Anything related to dolls, pretend play and even arts & crafts is deemed too baby-ish. The only things she’s into that I know about are makeup, nail polish and making “TikToks” (not actually uploaded, she has no social media access) of herself singing and dancing to pop songs. She already has tons of beauty products and merchandise from her favorite artists like Taylor Swift. Looking to spend $20-30 so not a Stanley or Lululemon budget.
Hi, does any one have recs for shampoos for tween/teen boys? The Aveeno Kids we’ve been using isn’t able to keep up with the increased greasiness, but would like something that’s still pretty gentle/low scent for when he inevitably gets it in his eyes…the klutz is strong with our family.
My 12 year old was sick a lot this winter, with what seemed like a perpetually runny nose. The skin under her nose was chapped from the runny nose, and I guess, when the skin healed — it discolored to retain a brownish hue, somehow? Anyway, from a distance, it looks like she is sporting a mustache or peach fuzz on her upper lip – but it’s not hair, just darker skin. Any suggestions for a lotion to use that might help? And, is this a permanent thing?
My kindergartner has been struggling to learn to read – she’s making progress but just seems to be progressing more slowly than you’d expect. We got her evaluated thinking perhaps there was a dyslexia problem or similar and instead learned that she is gifted but with high anxiety. And I’m not sure what to think about this.
Her older sister also got an anxiety diagnosis (from a different testing center) after her teacher had her referred for ADHD.
I am not anxious. I suspect DH is but he’s never been diagnosed or treated for it. I just feel really bad. Our house is all pretend play and no pressure on academics or really anything. I’m reading up on anxiety. Older DD is already in weekly therapy which has been great. Trying to find someone for my six year old now. I’m concerned two of my three kids have diagnosed anxiety and not really sure how to think about it or myself now.
On the plus side, turns out our underperforming kindergartner has the highest IQ in the family so I guess she has a lot of untapped potential? ugh.
Flying from Denver to Paris over spring break with my ten year old. Any advice on the use of melatonin to adjust to time change? Also, how to get kid to sleep on plane? Any big paris hits are of course welcome too!
What are your kids’ favourite art supplies?
My son really likes water colour pastels but they are expensive and hard to keep in good condition – they get a bit squidgy if they don’t get dry.
I had a pack of these wax strings which a visiting kid used to make really beautiful artwork.
